Historia
Young Everly Lederer and K.C. Stites come of age in Oriente Province, where the Americans tend their own fiefdom - 300,000 acres of United Fruit Company sugarcane that surround their gated enclave. If the rural tropics are a child's dreamworld, Everly and K.C. nevertheless have keen eyes for the indulgences and betrayals of the grown-ups around them - the mordant drinking and illicit loves, the race hierarchies and violence. In Havana, 1,000 kilometers and a world away from the American colony, a cabaret dancer meets a French agitator named Christian de La Mazière.

Amazing character development
Revisado: 02-16-25
Rachel Kushner is rightly celebrated. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read, and I’ve read hundreds. If you want a sense of Cuba before Castro’s revolution and the tensions involved, the book is also great for that historical perspective.

Historia
In a time when Washington, DC and the country are more polarized than they have been for decades, John McCain is the rare public figure who has earned the respect of people on both sides of the aisle. He is a model for bipartisanship and political integrity. In his 40 years in politics, McCain has never been afraid to buck trends or ruffle a few feathers. His words are more important today than ever.

Requiem for an American Hero; Bridges is Fantastic
Revisado: 10-16-18
Decency and friendships have been a casualty of Trump's ascension, but McCain's life and latest book offer an imperfect, but inspiring vision of what we once were and could be again. Beau Bridges should read every book, and he's particularly well-suited to this book. We miss you John McCain.

Historia
In The Surrender Experiment, Michael A. Singer tells the extraordinary story of what happened when, after a deep spiritual awakening, he decided to relinquish his personal fears and desires and simply let life unfold before him. Singer shares how this pivotal decision to embrace the flow of life led him to extraordinary success, sustained him through times of crisis, and allowed him to cultivate profound inner peace—whether as a young man pursuing a life of solitude in the woods, the founder of a thriving spiritual community in Florida, or the CEO of a billion-dollar medical software company.

One man's cream journey on a milky river of life
Revisado: 01-24-18
Singer aimlessly drifts to fame and fortune guided by the flow of life only to stripped of his fortune like Lot. only he doesn't really drift, he's driven. And he isn't really stripped of his fortune, it's merely whittled down a bit. The secret to success is, apparently, like the secret to wooing a woman: convince life you don't want its sweet fruit.

Historia
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

Title is True: Franken is a Giant
Revisado: 08-23-17
In the dark night of politics, Franken is a beacon of hope. Funny, inspiring, snarky and vindictive rolled into one enjoyable package. Franken explains what we already knew:
personal relations, knowing stuff, hard work and compromise are the keys to politics. Loved how he condensed the essence of the quintessentially awful Ted Cruz: the Dwight Shrute of the Senate. Perfect! Franken 2020!

Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a titanic figure among the world's great authors, and The Brothers Karamazov is often hailed as his finest novel. A masterpiece on many levels, it transcends the boundaries of a gripping murder mystery to become a moving account of the battle between love and hate, faith and despair, compassion and cruelty, good and evil.

Needs Editing - Murder Mystery Is Good; TOO LONG!
Revisado: 07-28-17
Like any good classic Russian novel, it's really long, and there are so many characters that taking notes may be required to keep track. Essentially, it's a meandering mish-mash for the first 16 hours, then there's a well-written murder mystery at the end. Needed a lot of editing, but unfortunately it didn't get it.

And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning. Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

We have killers too: Fiction?
Revisado: 02-22-17
I understand that there are things that happen in dark corners of our government that people try to justify by arguing that they're keeping us safe. The Chemist / Oleander, or whatever you want to call her, is a product of an unnamed department whose tactics make "enhanced interrogation" look like child's play. The story illustrates why using such tactics is a dangerous and slippery slope. Kevin, Oleander's nemesis-cum-compatriot, is the killing machine counterpart to Oleander's torture dame. All the inappropriateness and illegality aside, it remains an enjoyable read.

Historia
One hundred thousand years ago, at least six human species inhabited the Earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations, and human rights; to trust money, books, and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables, and consumerism?

Hailed by The New York Times as "a marvel of storytelling", The Things They Carried’s portrayal of the boots-on-the-ground experience of soldiers in the Vietnam War is a landmark in war writing. Now, three-time Emmy Award winner-Bryan Cranston, star of the hit TV series Breaking Bad, delivers an electrifying performance that walks the book’s hallucinatory line between reality and fiction and highlights the emotional power of the spoken word.

What war is really like. Cranston is AWESOME!
Revisado: 02-16-17
Bryan Cranston should read all audiobooks; his voice is the best. This book presents war as like most other human endeavors: messy, disorganized, occasionally terrifying and deadly. Heroism and service exist, but so does inhumanity.
