Best one of the 3-part series
Revisado: 04-10-24
This is the best one of the 3 books, in my opinion. Steve's performance added a personal element. I understood how he felt about what he was talking about because of his performance. Nice job!
There were some laugh-out-loud moments, and I learned while I was laughing. For example, the translations of Japanese cultural practices into English were funny.
The part that surprised me most was about sexless marriages. Bummer. I've heard that happens in other countries too. For anyone who is interested in moving to Japan to find a wife, this is an important cautionary tale. Good looking-out, Steve.
I enjoyed this book, and the performance was very good. I would recommend it to anyone interested in living abroad. Cultural differences are real. Learn about them before you travel!

Historia
In this smart and funny book, celebrated cartoonist Zach Weinersmith and noted researcher Dr. Kelly Weinersmith give us a snapshot of what's coming next - from robot swarms to nuclear fusion powered-toasters. By weaving their own research and interviews with the scientists who are making these advances happen, the Weinersmiths investigate why these technologies are needed, how they would work, and what is standing in their way.

Revisado: 04-10-24
Kelly and Zach did a great job writing and narrating this book. My favorite parts were about construction and precision medicine. The part about curing Alzheimer's and CF brought me a lot of hope. Hopefully those cures come soonish...
There's a lot of nerdy facts and humor in this book. The Graveyard of lost chapters at the end was a fun bonus! If you ever have a meet-up for fans in your basement (with snacks!), I want to be invited.
Great book. Very nerdy. Highly recommend!

Earth is not well. The promise of starting life anew somewhere far, far away—no climate change, no war, no Twitter—beckons, and settling the stars finally seems within our grasp. Or is it? Critically acclaimed, bestselling authors Kelly and Zach Weinersmith set out to write the essential guide to a glorious future of space settlements, but after years of research, they aren’t so sure it’s a good idea.

Edutaining, super nerdy book
Revisado: 04-10-24
I like how Kelly and Zach thought through the many angles of living on Mars. A lot of research clearly went into writing this book. My favorite part was about reproduction. My second favorite part was about how space affects the human body, including the taste buds. Taco sauce on cereal?! No thanks! Good job Kelly and Zach! I liked the narrator's performance, and I enjoyed hearing Kelly and Zach's voices in the mix too. Excellent performance overall.

Years ago, after suffering a humiliatingly large dumb tax, it dawned on me that I have a seemingly unlimited ability to hit unforced errors and sabotage my business and financial success. I suspect you do, too. It turns out that the key to getting rich (and staying that way) is to avoid doing stupid things. I don't need to do more smart things. I just need to make fewer dumb mistakes. The vast majority of our dumb tax is a direct result of emotional, overly optimistic, and poorly thought out decisions.

Learn about the Dumb Tax and more
Revisado: 04-10-24
I love author-read audiobooks. Keith Cunningham's performance helped me understand the material. He is clearly passionate about helping others with his business knowledge. I would recommend this book to anyone involved in running a business.
My two big take-aways were 1. There is a "Dumb Tax," and it should be avoided, and 2. Ordinary things consistently done produce extraordinary results.
My biggest criticism is that there was a whistling sound coming from Keith's mouth as he read at least one-third of the book. It was distracting enough to mention, but it wasn't annoying enough to stop listening. Overall, great audiobook. I enjoyed it very much.

Historia
Pharmacist Cory Jenks had all the elements to make a competent healthcare professional. Good looks, academic accolades, multiple board certifications, and a competitive residency. However, none of these items prepared him for truly caring for his patients in a chaotic healthcare environment, and he was struggling. After implementing lessons he learned as an improv comedian, Cory’s perspective began to shift. In this audiobook, Cory takes you through the comical and powerful tools needed to create a memorable, humanizing experience for your patients and colleagues.

When we're laughing, we're learning
Revisado: 01-14-24
Did I like this book? Yes, and I would recommend it to you.
I’m a big fan of author-read audiobooks, and Cory Jenks did a great job narrating this one. The “Yes, and” theme was not only repeated, but it was also demonstrated throughout the audiobook.
When we’re laughing, we’re learning. Cory’s stories about improv comedy scenes made me laugh out loud, and they hit home. From “gifts” to “alley-oops,” Cory introduced concepts and used thoughtful examples. The “hype man” example was my favorite. The clinical pharmacist stories resonated with me too. I am also a pharmacist.
I read the printed book a year before I listened to the audiobook. I don’t have much time to read, and listening to this audiobook provided a lot of continuity for me. Sometimes, I put a book down for a week or more before I have time to come back to it. Then, I forget where I’m at. It’s frustrating. I appreciate this audiobook and learned more the second time than I did the first time because I was able to finish is quickly. The second time I “read” the book (via audiobook), the part that resonated most (other than “Yes, and”) was the part about creating something as you’re falling from the plane. Looking beyond perfectionism and the fear of being wrong is important. Just get started, and use improv as your tool to take that first step.
Am I done with this review? Yes, and now it’s your turn to listen to this audiobook! If you’re in healthcare, you will laugh, learn, and enjoy this audiobook.

Honest resource from a US English teacher in Japan
Revisado: 10-09-23
This book should be required reading for anyone interested in teaching English to school children in Japan. Buy this audiobook and listen to it BEFORE you accept a teaching position in Japan.
Some Americans romanticize moving/working abroad. If you want an honest account of man's experience moving to Japan and teaching English to school-aged children, this is your book! Moving/working abroad has its ups and downs.
I like author-read audiobooks, and I listened to all 4 hours, 30 minutes of this Audiobook. I appreciated the author's honesty and stories. The last chapter is THE BEST. Way to go, Steve!
This is the second book in the author's "Everything I wish I'd known about Japan before I moved there" Series. I liked the first and second books, and I plan to listen to the third book.
My Mom is a retired English teacher in the US. She told me many stories about students as I grew up. Although she never wanted to be an English teacher in Japan, I was curious to hear Steve's stories about teaching English to Japanese students. Mom's stories and Steve's stories are very different!
The accompanying .pdf was helpful for understanding some of the visuals referenced in the audiobook.
Excellent storytelling. Great performance. Overall, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars. Now, onto book #3!

Good book for anyone looking to live abroad.
Revisado: 03-26-23
This book had value for me as an American interested in living abroad - not necessarily in Japan. As a narrator, Steve does a great job explaining the facts and telling how he felt about it at the same time. There was a clear timeline, from moving in to checking out, and I could hear the emotions throughout: pride, sarcasm, caution, annoyance, relief, and more.
Thanks for sharing what you learned during your 20 years living in Japan, Steve! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in living abroad. You don’t know what you don’t know, and this book could be used to create a checklist of things anyone living abroad needs to plan for or be aware of being making the leap.

I’m missing out on my life. What’s wrong with me? If that’s ever crossed your mind, and if you know there’s more to life than what you’ve been living, this audiobook is for you. It sucks to acknowledge that you are what’s keeping you from the life you want. You sacrifice what you want most for what you want in the moment. You know everything you’re supposed to do, and yet you feel stuck - limited by your past, overwhelmed by your future - in a purgatory of your own behavior.

Monday mornings aren’t supposed to be fun, but they should be predictable. However, on this particular Monday, Stephanie Plum knows that something is amiss when she turns up for work at Vinnie’s Bail Bonds to find that longtime office manager Connie Rosolli, who is as reliable as the tides in Atlantic City, hasn’t shown up. Stephanie’s worst fears are confirmed when she gets a call from Connie’s abductor. He says he will only release her in exchange for a mysterious coin that a recently murdered man left as collateral for his bail.

Historia
The public thinks he’s a motorcycle cop, but he’s a civilian, and an inexperienced rider at that. This new job as a police motorcycle escort for funeral processions is the best job he’s ever had, affording him respect and dignity that has so far eluded him. A colorful cast of characters help and hinder in his struggle to find meaning as they deliver the hearse and the deceased on its final journey to the grave. With constant reflections on mortality and a distinct sense of humor, Edwards tells his story with unflinching honesty and insight.

I loved it! Great storytelling!
Revisado: 07-06-22
As a motorcycle rider, I enjoy consuming books featuring motorcyclists as the main character. I was curious what an entire book about escorting funeral processions on a police motorcycle would include. Turns out, Steve Edwards talked about everything from getting trained, to finding his place among his co-workers, to handling public perception, and more. What I liked most was Steve's stories about doing the job (riding a police motorcycle to escort funeral processions). Great storytelling! During most chapters, I felt like I was on the job with Steve. He described locations, weather conditions, descriptions of co-workers, job duties, funeral attendees, etc in detail. There were serious moments, but Steve included both humor and safety messages aimed directly at riders. I felt like Steve wrote this book for riders like me to enjoy. There is universal appeal in there too though. Who hasn't started a new job and had to find their way from novice to expert? There were some relatable moments in this book. I would definitely recommend this book. Entertaining and relatable, yet unique. I didn't know police motorcycle escorts for funeral processions were a thing. Now, I know!
