As a woman, she is not meant to work with glass—but she has the hands for it, the heart, and a vision. When her father dies, she teaches herself to make glass beads in secret, and her work supports the Rosso family fortunes.

I love historical fiction, which is one reason why I enjoy Tracy Chevalier’s work. Much research must go into each novel in order to accurately portray the skills of the artisans given their tools, equipment, and the ethics and morals of the time periods being presented. As I listen, I try to think about: “Could I have done this work as well as she did if that were me?” The answer is usually “No!” Thank you for immersing me in another time/place. The reader also did a remarkable job helping to place me there/then. Thank you!

Unrealistic. Couldn’t even finish. But the worst part was the reader. I can’t say “narrator,” as that would imply a person performing this story with the pace, pitch, pausing, and power of a professional presenter. You won’t find that here. It is read, to be sure, but not performed. It was plastic, masquerading as flesh and blood. The story was not good enough to carry the burden of the unrealistic reading. Sorry AI, but you flunked “elocution.” Please leave the presentation to professional performers.

Historia
In 1837, seven-year-old Thomas Wright followed in his family’s footsteps into one of England’s most dangerous coal mines. He struggled with childhood fears, working twelve-hour days, six days a week in the darkness 500 feet below ground. That was until disaster struck in one of England’s most horrific accidents that changes the direction of his life and the course of history. This is the fast-moving story of a young boy overcoming the iron-fisted rule of the massively wealthy lord of the land.

Never is an extraordinary novel, full of heroines and villains, false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries. It brims with cautionary wisdom for our times, and delivers a visceral, heart-pounding story that transports listeners to the brink of the unimaginable.

Excellent trip through history!
Revisado: 08-23-24
What a wonderful trip through time! Characters bring to life the history of Salisbury Plain, from the end of the Ice Age to 1985. Anyone who has ever visited Stonehenge or Salisbury Cathedral can instantly place themselves in the story. It was long, but not too long. I was quite disappointed that it ended. I was sure that it couldn’t possibly be finished already.
The reader was quite engaging. Her pronunciation of foreign words was very good. I do have to say that I am quite unused to the British pronunciation of some words, like grimACE, instead of GRIMace. Overall, the production was excellent.
I am only sorry about one thing, which I will remedy when I relisten to this epic. I will have a pencil and much paper so that I can make family trees, noting physical and personal characteristics of the members of the families, as well as dates and historical occurrences. Then I will be able to see connections which I only inferred from memory.
Thank you for sharing this trip through history. I heartily endorse this Audiobook.

Wait , what?
Revisado: 02-06-24
“Alright students, time’s up. Pencils down.” The last two books in the “Earth’s Children” series, The Shelters of Stone and The Land of Painted Caves seemed to this reader to be rushed, hurried, incomplete. The stories, of course, were wonderfully entertaining and enlightening, but they both left many loose ends. This was my fourth time reading this favorite series, and I tried to follow the threads of story lines to their conclusions, but found that too many just fizzled away.
The amazing amount of research required to create such an epic staggers my mind, but was well worth the time and energy to instruct and entertain so many of the modern “Earth’s Children”. Perhaps I am expecting too much to wish that this series could have a satisfying conclusion. It never ended, did it?
The narrator of this series did an amazing job capturing personalities and multiple dialects. Her artistry made the series come alive.
Until next time, then …

Rated R for racy
Revisado: 01-21-24
I love the “Earth’s Children” series. This is my fifth time through it. Ms. Auel’s research has made the details of everyday survival of peoples living during the Ice Age come alive.
I do think, however, that the story would be more beloved if I didn’t think that I was observing a porn production. So they had sex anywhere, anytime. Could you possibly leave a few more of the details about it to the readers’ imaginations? Hints regarding different cultures’ inhibitions and exhibitions might suffice as to what happened beneath the furs.
Overall I have learned quite a lot about living during the time of the glaciers. It certainly makes me appreciate our more temperate climate today. Sorry, but swimming in an icy river is just not my cup of tea!
Ms. Burr’s narration is excellent. Her characters have distinctive voices and personalities. Nice job!

This novel of awesome beauty and power is a moving saga about people, relationships, and the boundaries of love. Through Jean M. Auel’s magnificent storytelling we are taken back to the dawn of modern humans, and with a girl named Ayla we are swept up in the harsh and beautiful Ice Age world they shared with the ones who called themselves the Clan of the Cave Bear.

Superb!
Revisado: 01-18-24
This has been my fourth time enjoying this story. I will be continuing with the series to its conclusion again. I am grateful that Ms.Auel did so much research so as to make this story so believable that it does not pander to fiction, but tickles the imagination to see how life during the Ice Age could well have been. Ms. Burr is a perfect narrator for this story. Her pitch, pace, power, and emotion bring the story to life.
I would love to write more here, but I’m anxious to begin the next story. Please read/listen to this story. You’ll thank me later!
