I agree with the other reviewers - this book was just lackluster in comparison to LK's other works of the same series.
However, Mary Jane Wells is such a wonderful narrator that I cannot help but listen.

Sizzling hot, one of the best in the series
Revisado: 08-06-17
Of all of the maiden Lane series, this one is the steamiest IMO. Love the story, and as always, entertaining and keeps me listening till the very end. I didn't mind the narrator. She was hard to get use to at first but after a while it was ok.

Right up there with Lord of Scoundrel, Lorreta Chase has a way with words and captures the reader with an unusual story that you just can't put down. I am a huge fan of well written period romance novels, and this book is one of those that doesn't have the extreme emotional highs and lows that some other books would have, but still have plenty of action and drama to keep the readers on the toes. I know some readers have complained that there are too much historical references that might have bogged down the flow, which I wholeheartedly disagree because I didn't find it hindering the story plot one bit — in fact it was necessary in my opinion to create the surrounding for the story to evolve in and I actually quite enjoyed it. I liked that in this story, there are always redeeming qualities even for the worst villain, and the most refreshing thing about this book is that the hero is someone who doesn't have a crazy temper and is level headed, and lastly acts like a normal human being. Crazy as it seems, it is very refreshing in a historical period romance, as a lot of the stories are plagued with heroes of that crazy sort. For me, this was a light read, and definitely have it's comedic value at certain points. Highly recommended!

Frustrating but addictive read

Any additional comments?
I agree with a lot of the other reviewers of this book that found it frustrating — a lot of it went downhill after the wedding and I couldn't believe for a second that the main heroine couldn't find the nerve to confront Alex about what really happened. The relationship seemed really emotionally taxing especially with Alex's crazy temper. I get it, he is hot, he is an earl, but you just can't get away with that kind of abuse and still forgive him! I get that back in Georgian period, women are very limited to what their liberties are when it comes to marriage, but a lot of it wouldn't have happened if Charlotte had just straight up confronted him about it with the facts of the events instead of letting it drag on till the very end for the purpose of ending it with a great "surprise". With that being said, James is a very talented writer and kept me captivated. For that, I give this a 3.5 star. And since I can't do .5, I will round it up to a reluctant 4.

Nicholas Boulton is a narrating god
Revisado: 02-07-15
What made the experience of listening to The Prince of Midnight the most enjoyable?
I didn't realize how easy it was to listen to Nicholas Boulton narrate The Prince of Midnight. Laura Kinsale delivers another great story, although this one is not my favorite, and I find that I liked her other book Flowers from the Storm much more so than this. Perhaps it's the fact that I just want reach across the pages and shake Lee to death because I really couldn't understand her hot and cold-ness with T.S. But honestly, I can listen to Boulton read law books and I'll still probably enjoy it. The quality and the performance of this audio book is so much better than anything else I've ever listened to in audiobook format, it is the gold standard of voice performance. The story was very entertaining, but nothing ruins a good story like an annoying, obtuse heroine.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Least interesting had to be anything to do with Lee. If it wasn't for how fantastic T.S. is in this book, I would have not been able to finish the story.
Which scene was your favorite?
When T.S. saves Dove and meets up with Lee.
Any additional comments?
Nicholas Boulton, I love you.

Gripping, captivating, couldn't stop listening.
Revisado: 01-29-15
Would you listen to Flowers from the Storm again? Why?
This is one of those books that you just can't stop once you start, and it has quickly become one of my all-time favorite period romance novels. I've always enjoyed period romances, but this story isn't all glamorous and fluffy like the rest.
This story has a struggling, tormented hero and a heroine who is torn between her belief, duty, and love, and she's not your typical heroine either. I guess that's why I like this book as much as I did. It's refreshing but at the same time gripping because you cannot wait to find out what is going to happen to the characters. The supporting characters were just as entertaining and added so much value and depth to the entire story line.
The story starts off with the brilliant lascivious duke, who had minimal considerations for the kind of lifestyle that he had grown accustom to. When an illness strikes, he is displaced and forced onto a path where he meets Archimedia (Maddie) Tims, the heroine. While the story is fantastically written, Maddie does frustrate me at times with her indecisiveness. Her lack of decision however, is a result of the struggle between her love for Christian and faith, which subsequently becomes the catalyst for the penultimate chapters of the book.
With the story plot aside, Christian Jervaulx, the flawed-but-beautiful hero does tug at your heartstrings as the story goes on with his tortured soul and those midnight blue eyes...
As for the main heroine, there were parts of the story where I wanted to reach across and slap her silly and at the same time felt sorry for her.
My favorite part of the books though, has to be the fireplace scene, and the ending. Oh what a brilliantly sweet ending!
This book is highly recommended, and HIGHLY worth the credit.
Have you listened to any of Nicholas Boulton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
My god! Nicholas Boulton is now officially my favorite male narrator. His voice is to die for!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Absolutely. I couldn't stop listening till the wee hours!

I loved all of KA's Colorado Series EXCEPT this
Revisado: 01-14-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
While I have enjoyed all of the books in this series, and I was really looking forward to Deck's story, this arc just didn't grab me like the rest. If you enjoy listening to Emma Taylor narrating tepid love making over and over again and it can only be described so many times in so many ways that results in the same vanilla flavor, then this is the book for you. I am not even really sure where the climax of the story is suppose to be. Even if it was the climax, I felt the author tried to be creative but in the end felt like a cheap shot to give it a "twist". This story is suppose to be more about the main character dealing with an "invisible" threat than a physical one. However, it didn't really arouse any emotional commitment and the story felt lukewarm at best.
What do you think your next listen will be?
No idea, but I think I am done with the Colorado series. I think the publisher might be pushing KA too hard on this series and it's really crashed and burn for me.
What about Emma Taylor’s performance did you like?
ET's performance is always solid.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Kaleidoscope?
Deck is supposedly be this brilliant PI, but rather than delivering intriguing story lines that provokes the reader to come to that conclusion, the author had to keep repeating it throughout the story line by reiterate his "brilliance", and dressed it up with some presumption dialogues. Not a fan.

Seriously, grow a spine.
Revisado: 12-14-14
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
If you're someone who enjoys a weak, fumbling, spinelessly dull heroine, that then this is your book.
What do you think your next listen will be?
After listening to this, I am not quite sure if I want to get the third book. I HATE quitting in the middle of a series, but this book really put the nail in the coffin for me half way through and I was having a very difficult time finishing it.
What does Edita Brychta bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Edita did a fantastic job narrating, but despite her talent, when the material is crap, well, you can only go so far before hitting the ceiling with this book.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
While I thoroughly enjoyed the first book of the series, this second installment was so tepid and drawn out that I had stopped listening so many times. It was either the main heroine pissing me off due to her lack of spine and absolute worthlessness, or the fact that story was just going nowhere. For the first 80% of the book, the story goes back and forth between the heroine and her man doing the same thing to each other over and over again — granted I understand the author was just trying to build up the relationship, but it took forever for that set-up to happen and I am not quite sure if the author was just trying fill a quota or what, but it definitely felt like it. It was literally pulling teeth to get some momentum going for the story. While the first book got me a little hot and bothered here and there, the second book did absolutely nothing for me. I was so disappointed in the main characters that I couldn't even enjoy it because I found them unbelievably useless and lame.
Any additional comments?
Skip this one, and hopefully the third one will be better.

One night will never be enough...Livy notices him the moment he walks into the coffee shop. He's heart-stoppingly stunning, with a blue-eyed gaze so piercing she's almost too distracted to take his order. When he walks out the door, she thinks she'll never see him again. Then she finds the note he left on his napkin...signed M. All he wants is one night to worship her. No feelings, no commitment, nothing but pleasure. Every defense mechanism Livy has adopted during her solitary life is at risk of being obliterated by this confounding man.

Who was your favorite character and why?
Grandmother! She's fun!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No it didn't make me laugh or cry, but it captivated me and kept me enthralled the entire time.
Any additional comments?
Great story, can't wait to finish book 2 and book 3 is coming out in Feb 2015. Although the first few chapters had me going, "why is this main character so clumsy and stupid?" but after she gets her act together, it quickly got a lot better and the story moved at a good pace. I started my audible subscription few months ago and I finished a few series, this is definitely one of my favorite thus far. IMO, much better than Fifty Shades, almost as good as the Colorado Mountain Series by Kristen Ashley.
