Not Worth It
Revisado: 06-04-24
Extensive scholarship regarding Civil War history the elucidates life in the South in the antebellum and post – war eras. Although the story of the Scarlett O’Hara character has interesting elements, the extreme racism and completely ludicrous notions of southern treatment of African-Americans as portrayed here entirely undermines, in my view, any evaluation, placing this book among the greatest in American history… or anything close. That it was written in 1936 rather than 1866 makes it all the worse.

A Revisionary Take
Revisado: 02-14-24
Meyer advances a version of the Tudor story that is significantly odds from the popular view, especially regarding Elizabeth. Meyer freely admits that this work is not aimed at academic audiences but neither is it in any way a poorly researched. It is clear from the outset, however, that the author has a decided ax to grind, and my primary gripe with this able book is that the author does not undertake greater effort to be a bit more evenhanded. To say, for example, that Elizabeth accomplished nothing except preserving her crown can be deftly assailed as over the top. Nevertheless, it is a good read.

Historia
The Earth teems with sights and textures, sounds and vibrations, smells and tastes, electric and magnetic fields. But every kind of animal, including humans, is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble, perceiving but a tiny sliver of our immense world. In An Immense World, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent, waves of electromagnetism, and pulses of pressure that surround us.

Amazing presentation albeit a somewhat tedious read
Revisado: 01-23-24
This incredible study of the depth and breath of scientific discovery regarding the nature of sensory experience of the living creatures of our planet is remarkable. Scientists and non-scientists alike are likely to find it incredibly illuminating. By way of criticism, its abiding detail is its great strength also it’s largest drawback. The book could have used a more detailed, edit with an eye toward enhancing its message, and making it slightly more readable for the general reader.

Performance Ruins a Masterpiece
Revisado: 01-13-24
Hard as it is to believe, the beauty of this classic was drawn down significantly by very large number of word mispronunciations. One would think that producing company would vet the product more substantially.

Historia
Fantasy, love and an exuberant celebration of English life and literature, Orlando is a uniquely entertaining story. Originally conceived by Virginia Woolf as a playful tribute to the family of her friend and lover, Vita Sackville-West, Orlando's central character, a fictional embodiment of Sackville-West, changes sex from a man to a woman and lives throughout the centuries, whilst meeting historical figures of English literature.

Historia
Countess Ellen Olenska, separated from her European husband, returns to old New York society. She bears with her an independence and an awareness of life which stirs the educated sensitivity of the charming Newland Archer, engaged to be married to her cousin, May Welland. Though he accepts the society's standards and rules he is acutely aware of their limitations. He knows May will assure him a conventional future but Ellen, scandalously separated from her husband, forces Archer to question his values and beliefs.

This treatment of Wharton’s amazing classic is matchless. The narrator, through his artful use of tone and volume, expresses with exquisite poignancy the soul-crushing effect the conventions of the “age” worked on the hearts of Archer and Ellen. Magnificent.

Excellence
Revisado: 05-30-23
This great novel about the injustices and stresses in Indian society at the time of British rule is so beautifully written, and insightful, providing critiques of western racism that remain as valuable today as when this classic was written. The narrator did not bother me although I do not think he added all that much.

Revisado: 05-14-23
I found the substance of this book to be fascinating. Adee has undertaken great research, and obviously has a very strong grasp of her subject. So I would definitely recommend the book, probably more in written form than on Audible. I find her writing to be a bit over the top. I did not like her performance of this book at all. Maybe she is trying to hard.

Historia
Emma can be enjoyed as a charming love story, a detective story, and a comic and lively picture of English life 200 years ago. Austen's beautiful, clever, wilful but fallible heroine Emma Woodhouse believes she knows best. Perfectly content with her life she sees no need for either love or marriage, yet nothing pleases her more than meddling in the romantic lives of others.

Historia
Exclusively from Audible. The Secret Agent is based on an actual attempt made in 1894 to blow up the Greenwich Observatory. A labyrinth of greed, corruption, and betrayal, it is the most darkly humorous of all Conrad's tales. It follows a European secret agent, Adolf Verloc, 'a London shop owner' with anarchist leanings who becomes reluctantly involved in a plot to blow up the Greenwich Observatory. Full of great characters, melodramatic irony and psychological intrigue the tale is far from simple....
