I've just hit my breaking point with the extended lecture about Healthy Eating!!
I was tolerating the more subtle comments about weight and size - but seriously????
And where's the action? A stupid neighbor, 2 dogs, a pointless "investigation", and interviewing old ladies???
Is there even a plot here???

I do audiobooks for escapism and entertainment - not to be lectured about healthy eating - and have a low tolerance for virtue signaling in general. There's a major steaming service that's lost me more than once over that in their home grown shows...
Leave the virtue signaling for the pulpit, dais, or podium - I don't want it intruding on my entertainment!!!

How does one return a book when they realized it's been wasted???

This is my second time listening to MitD - and am finding myself again bemoaning the lack of the rest of the series in audio!!

Pepper Winters is the only author who consistently manages to bring me to tears. She creates these worlds, and people with such depth and makes them part of your own personal world - makes you care - makes you empathize - and makes you feel what they're feeling, hurt when they hurt and rejoice when they rejoice. I'm not going to rehash the plot - read other reviews if you want that. I'm talking about how the book left me feeling. I do a lot of audiobooks, as i spend about 3 hours a day driving - and although i have several authors I favor - Pepper Winters is who I return to time and again to break up the numbing monotony of going to work, bill paying, cooking dinner, washing clothes and tending parents. She breaks through the tedium of daily life and re-awakens my emotions. She makes me feel - and want to feel - and appreciate feeling. She also makes me look out of my own little world and more appreciate those around me who are there for me day after day - the folks that can and regretfully do so easily become part of the background noise of daily life. She inspires me to look past the background noise and see and reconnect with the people there...and I come away from her stories so much better for having been reawakened and reconnected again!

But back to the title for my review -
Q is only Book 2 of the series - there are so many reasons we need the rest of the series on Audio!
i just don't have time to 'sit and read a book' but got more time than most to listen to one!
And when (not if) they go to audio - please keep the same team of narrators!
I can't envision any set of voices being able to do better justice to the emotional nuances of the story!!

It's horribly embarrassing to be hiding behind your desk crying....
or to have to pull over to get a grip on emotions while driving home from work!

I've been a fan of Pepper's writing since i discovered her Indebted series - and moved on to nearly everything else she has available on Audio. Her ability to suck the reader into the world she created is unique - and even though she has a dark twist on everything, she leaves her readers drained, purged, yet whole and better for the experience. At least I've felt that way - and this story is the epitome of that! Yes - about half way through the inklings of the ending began to niggle - fear and anticipation of where things were going kept me engaged - can you say frozen pizza for dinner cuz i couldn't concentrate enough on anything but Ren and Ribbon to cook a real dinner?

I'm writing this review even though I've not quite finished the story - i had to put it aside and wipe the tears...not appropriate behind your desk! But it will be finished today - maybe I'll go sit in my car at lunch. And I'm already planning to revisit the duet in a month or so - a need only Pepper's books seem to draw out in me. I became entranced with Ren and Ribbon early in the first book - and have had a difficult time distancing myself from the story through the second - much to hubby's consternation. I've just not been able to disentangle myself from Pepper's world full of real people - real emotions - real anger, hate, jealousy, mistakes, triumphs, guilt, honor, wins, losses and forgiveness - and love.

Methinks my hubby will look at me questioningly as I sit at his feet this evening once the book is finished, needing to feel the connection to him and his love that's a need clawing at me now. As this story has made it so abundantly clear above all else - do not loose touch with, do not deceive and above all - be honest to those close to you! The lesson is there for the taking! The story - the world the reader is brought in to gets dark, and brings the reader to question themselves and their morality a bit - but some soul searching periodically is good for you - helps keep you real.

I've already shared my thoughts on the Ribbon duet with those at work i swap recommendations with!
and i'm sharing my highest recommendation with anyone on Audible who would pay attention!

I don't cry - seriously ! I don't! Haven't in years - until last night...
It is a rare story that can capture me so thoroughly - and this series did exactly that. I've been flipping between the ebook at my desk at work and the audiobook everywhere else, because I couldn't stand being away from the world so beautifully crafted and the people I'd come to care about, worry about, and so love to hate!
I'm not going to give up any spoilers - others have done that already - and even having read other reviews I was not prepared for the impact of what happened. I knew something big was coming - it was inevitable. Becoming vested in Needle and Kite, Nila and Jet, and their growth through the 6 books in this series - their fight and growth and evolution - their love and light - their F****d up family and circumstances - their fight and ultimate triumph over it all was emotionally draining and utterly fulfilling.
Sometimes Love Does Conquer All.
Sometimes one of the Good Guys doesn't make it to the end.
Sometimes there is Redemption!
Sometimes the Wrong Thing done for the Right Reason is Good.

Thankfully, short the epilogue, this series is intact in audio already. The cliffhangers at the end of each book would make it unbearable to wait for the next book to come out on Audio!
I've already purchased the audiobooks for two other series - they're next up. I'll be redoing this series on Audio (maybe when the Epilogue is released) and have put Ms Winters on my "must get" list for anything else she comes out with!

If you're not totally repulsed by the darkness and graphic details of medieval and psychological torture, leaving your heart shuddering and cold, then know that you will be lightened and warmed by the hard won victory and healing at the end, making it all worth it!!!

Would you listen to Blood Shadows again? Why?

Absolutely - I've always loved Unchained Melody - but this was the first time I got shivers down my spine hearing it!! What a great story!! And Eric G. Dove again delivered the stellar performance I've come to know from him!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Marquis is still the standout for me. Everyone knows that beneath his ruff gruff exterior lies a heart of gold and a an iron protectiveness of those he calls his own. Maybe because he reminds me much of my own HEA - but he continues to command my attention and allegiance in any scene he's in and I find myself waiting/second guessing to see his reaction to any given situation.

Which scene was your favorite?

It's a toss up between a 'broken' radio - and an extended dream with a gratifying end. Both speak to the connection between two souls that far exceeded the one between the two minds.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes - but regretfully life prohibits that! I get a cupla hours a day at best while driving to work - maybe more on weekends.

Any additional comments?

Eric G. Dove also does another popular vampire series - which also has a special place in my heart - so when i realized he was this series I knew it was going to be a phenomenal read! And he did not disappoint!!! AND - he can sing! Who knew!?!

With that, I saw on Tessa Dawns website that she expects the rest of the audiobooks to be released by the end of 2015 - Couldn't be fast enough for me!!

What made the experience of listening to The Inheritor the most enjoyable?

The reader was great! Her timing worked in so many ways throughout the story.

What other book might you compare The Inheritor to and why?

This is the 6th, and best so far of the Marketplace series! As this is not my normal fare, I don't have anything to compare it to, as this series seems to stand alone! I got snagged by it a couple of years ago at someone else's recommendation - and have enjoyed the foray into the fantasy of the World of the Marketplace as well as following the well developed characters and interwoven intrigues of people of power.

What does Elizabeth Jasicki bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She made the characters, and by extension, the world, seem more real.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I Laughed, I moaned, I flew, I crashed, I felt, I sympathized, I sighed (long, deep sighs), I was awed, I related, I detached, I loved, I hated, I screamed (this at the ending!). The full gamut of emotions are represented and drawn out for the 'emotional masochist' to revel in!!

Any additional comments?

The best in the series - and the one that absolutely has me panting for the next book!!
There is going to be a next book...right????

Who was your favorite character and why?

Phèdre steals the show - despite it all. She is an Anguisette - which in modern parlance probably means sexual masochist. I cannot say i completely 'get' the draw as described - but i did get the eloquence with which it was described. I totally got the stream-of-conscience type explorations into Phedra's thought processes as she grew up and into herself. And although her being an Aguisette was a pivotal reality - it was only a portion of the person we learned of, and that she grew in to! Phèdre was one of the most realistically crafted characters I've encountered in a long time! She was hot, she was cold, she loved as she hated, she vascillated, she fought and she won and she lost, she made decisions and doggedly stuck to them - despite! That was her gift to the reader - being real.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It was just too long for one sitting - and i found the enforced breaks in listening great opportunities to think on the way Carey gently challenged religious and moral tomes.

Any additional comments?

Carey has crafted an interesting world - with a different moral and religious structure - giving one pause to consider their own beliefs on occasion. There are many paralells that can be made between Jewish tennets and those Carey has laid out. It is all done without intent to insult, and i believe she has accomplished that! The blending of various cultures is well done! I am amused that this series, this first book written so many years ago, is only now coming to general popularity, as our society is starting to openly explore and be more accepting of "alternate" lifestyles and sexual practices.

Carey takes us on a long trip, where we meet some lovely people, and some very scarey ones, and some very very memorable ones, but they are all real! Despite the Medieval-style timeframe, the intrigues and betrayals, loyalties and conflicts, the myths and legends, and loves, it all feel very timeless. There are those little bits of detail in the descriptions of a setting or situation that Carey does so well, without the violence necessarily becoming overpowering.

Phèdre and Joscelin are. What they are evolves, changes, becomes victim and beneficiary of wants, needs, desires, schemes and betrayals, and friendships and loves and loyalties of all types, from almost every possible direction. And yet ...
I am going to continue with this series - I enjoy Phèdre's world. I want to see where she has yet to go - what she can accomplish! What she and Joscelin can accomplish.
And she reminds me in so many ways - that which yeilds is not necessarily weak!!!

Where does Fifty Shades Freed rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Captivating. The story held my attention - if for no other reason than to figure out what was gonna happen next! It's not a master work of prose, and is based in a world few have any frame of reference to relate to - that of the opulently rich, with more money than brains. But the characters are easy themselves to relate to, and sympathize with - flawed, insecure, occasionally clumsy, with inner demons chasing them, in need of being slapped occasionally!
And despite all that, Ana and Christian manage to work it out!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I'm a sucker for tragic flawed Alpha-Males - so duh.... but I found Ana's Inner Goddess a particular joy when she appeared!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

For Consenting Adults Only!!!

Any additional comments?

The third of the series focuses more on dramatic ways for our tragic male, Christian, and our budding heroine, Ana, to work through their own personal demons and their made-in-fairyland but not perfect relationship into a HEA.
Ana finally finds her inner B***H, and takes a definitive stand, which rattles Christian to the core and starts his pattern of growth. The roller coaster continues as life, stacked full of unfortunate and somewhat predictable circumstances, force our beloved Christian to face his demons and grow up. Ana, too, finds herself letting go of some of her juvenile, impulsive pettyness and insecurities and blossoms.

This is a fairytale - full of teen angst and wrapped up in some steamy "vanilla" and not-so-vanilla sex. It's easy to relate to the clumsy insecure heroine and drool after the perfectly flawed Adonis - almost as easy as it is to lose track of the real story here - of 2 people who did connect and helped each other grow up. The prose is choppy occasionally, the ending felt rushed, and the reader was... well - could have used more definition and intonation in her delivery. But I did enjoy the story, and series.
It’s for consenting adults only!

Where does Fifty Shades Darker rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

Not the best - but it's up there! There was some overuse of phrases, and the narrator could have used a bit more diversity in her interpretation of the voices. I did, however, find her presentation of Anastasia to be reasonably accurate for a young 20-something female, who clearly came into this story/world very niave - but strong. Not exactly a role model, but not the weak minded fawn she could have been portrayed as. There is a love story here - and a story of 2 people growing up - together. Average girls falls at feet and into arms of Adonis-like billionaire - not a completely realistic scenario - but i was entrances and caught up in the energy as the story progressed.

What did you like best about this story?

It is, at it's core, a love story. There's intrigue, and the every murcurial Christian Gray to contend with - but i'm captivated by trying to keep up with the evolution of their relationship.

Which scene was your favorite?

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the interplay between Ana's Inner Goddess and her Sub-Conscious, and watching them develop into characters unto themselves. It reminded me of my own struggles in my youth!

Any additional comments?

Captivating as the love story and evolution of the relationship were for me, i found the frequency and seemingly needless sex a bit off-putting and excessive to what would have been needed to advance the plot. I'm a bit of a sucker for gothically tragic, self depricating men - so Christian worked well for me. The airheaded Anastasia was, well, pretty much what I would have expected. I personally wasn't put off by the Kink-Lite, nor the Alpha/Domineering Male versus semi-submissive female interplay - it's typical to a lot of what I read. But if you find that distressing, or take a personal affront to that kind of interplay in your characters, this is not the read for you.

I had thoroughly enjoyed the first book and waited rather impatiently for the second to come out (now biting my nails for the third!).
There were questions left from the first - mostly answered here - and now there are more questions abounding! I found myself trying to guess though motives and outcomes all along the way, frequently surprised by the turns and twists the story took.
What is the big secret? Will Tris be able to hold on to Four? Marcus did what?
I will be redoing the 2 books again here shortly...I've found this world completely captivating, and the artful setup for answers has me salivating for the conclusion - which just cannot come soon enough!
