Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Remarkable
Revisado: 11-28-19
I didn’t know for sure where this story would go - it was a lovely story read by a lovely man - I couldn’t stop listening it was way too short and full of surprises - and I didn’t want it to end - but I was satisfied and sighed - I listened as well to the ending credits.

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Women of a certain time
Revisado: 06-27-19
Excellent performance by narrator Blair Brown. Gilbert’s book tells the story of independent women born in time of WWII.
Women who didn’t marry, women who left their families and felt no guilt, women who were promiscuous and wild when young. Women who knew how to have friends and not marry. The main character, however, was a natural born seamstress and left her parents home with her sewing machine in hand and was like my own mother who sewed and tailored for a living her whole life and lived til 102.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Historia
Best-selling and beloved author Madeleine L’Engle, Newbery winner for A Wrinkle in Time, was known the world round for her imaginative spirit and stories. She was also known to spark controversy - too Christian for some, too unorthodox for others. Somewhere in the middle was a complex woman whose embrace of paradox has much to say to a new generation of readers and listeners today. A Light so Lovely casts a vivid portrait of this enigmatic icon’s spiritual legacy, starting with her inner world and including fresh reflections on her writing for today’s listeners.

Very Truthful
Revisado: 11-18-18
Madeleine L'Engle changed my life. I have read all her books and corresponded with her - amazed she answered me. This book gives me more clarity into her life - I knew bits and pieces. Sarah Arthur is a great author and wrote with care and with love. The narrator was perfect. Carolynne Harris

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

Truth is spoken here and laughter happens
Revisado: 06-15-18
I love listening to David Sedaris, this is a wondrous book of essays and live performances. He writes with clarity, truth and humor even when the story is tragic he finds a way to make laughter an okay response.

Historia
Tracy K. Smith has a fairly typical upbringing in suburban California: the youngest in a family of five children raised with limitless affection and a firm belief in God by a stay-at-home mother and an engineer father. But after spending a summer in Alabama at her grandmother's home, she returns to California with a new sense of what it means for her to be Black: from her mother's memories of picking cotton as a girl in her father's field for pennies a bushel to her parents' involvement in the Civil Rights Movement.

Depressing
Revisado: 06-29-11
I felt the same about The Year We Left Home as I did about Jonathan Franzen's book, Freedom, each story about one family, both depressing to me. The writing is excellent, but I didn't love Thompson's characters, there was no joy in them. Maybe if I came from Iowa I could relate. The parents of the family were flat and and not developed - I wanted to l like them, but I knew little about them.
This book got a good review in the Oprah magazine otherwise I probably wouldn't have chosen it.

One of the most interesting and enjoyable books I have read or listened to this year including Cuttting for Stone. The author brought hope and happiness to me, I could relate to each character. The narrator was perfect.
