Wonderful book. Annoying nonsensical narration.
Revisado: 04-19-25
I would have prefered the author's voice. Or even an "untrained" narrator.
I could barely make sense of this wonderful informative book because of the bouncy, smiley, sing-songy narration. Such a disappointment as I was looking forward to listening on my dog walks. :(

Historia
For the last 20 years, George Saunders has been teaching a class on the Russian short story to his MFA students at Syracuse University. In A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, he shares a version of that class with us, offering some of what he and his students have discovered together over the years. Paired with iconic short stories by Chekhov, Turgenev, Tolstoy, and Gogol, the seven essays in this book are intended for anyone interested in how fiction works and why it’s more relevant than ever in these turbulent times.

just perfect

I return to this audio recording regularly. It's so helpful and inspired, and Saunders' voice in your ear is downright restorative.

Historia
Welcome to Mattagash, the last town in the middle of the northern Maine wilderness. The road dead-ends here, but Mattagash's citizens are fiercely proud. Yet this simple town connected by a single one-way bridge is anything but tranquil. While neighbors bicker publicly over trivialities such as offensive mailbox designs and gossip about suspicious newcomers, they privately struggle to navigate deeper issues - scandals, loss, failed ambitions, the scars of war - and a mysterious dead body in the woods.

if only the narration were different
Revisado: 04-27-23
The narrator is just so... Disney. No one from Maine sounds this way. I'd have paid double for a straightforward, no-attempt-at-all-of-the-accents, narration.

Historia
Lucy Barton is a writer, but her ex-husband, William, remains a hard man to read. William, she confesses, has always been a mystery to me. Another mystery is why the two have remained connected after all these years. They just are. So Lucy is both surprised and not surprised when William asks her to join him on a trip to investigate a recently uncovered family secret—one of those secrets that rearrange everything we think we know about the people closest to us.

Love the writing. The narration is awful.
Revisado: 01-02-23
Wonderful book. But the narration is of the 'acting' variety - overly 'performed' to the point of being distracting. In a word, annoying.
