Historia
Bristol in 1787 is booming, a city where power beckons those who dare to take risks. Josiah Cole, a small dockside trader, is prepared to gamble everything to join the big players of the city. But he needs capital and a well-connected wife. Marriage to Frances Scott is a mutually convenient solution. Trading her social contacts for Josiah's protection, Frances finds her life and fortune dependent on the respectable trade of sugar, rum, and slaves. Into her new world comes Mehuru, once a priest in the ancient African kingdom of Yoruba, now a slave in England.

Revisado: 06-29-22
I will now search for anything narrated by Adjoa Andoh! She is amazing!
Most of the time, there are always little quirks which I don't enjoy from the narrators. But THIS ONE! She is wonderful!
I have loved every story by Philippa Gregory - this one is one of her best.

Historia
Called a great book worthy of a great man, this definitive biography of the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet in World War II is considered the best book ever written about Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. Highly respected by both the civilian and naval communities, Nimitz was sometimes overshadowed by more colorful warriors in the Pacific such as MacArthur and Halsey. Potter's lively and authoritative style fleshes out Admiral Nimitz's personality to help listeners appreciate the contributions he made as the principle architect of Japan's defeat.

Loved this story, but...
Revisado: 01-22-22
I wish authors wouldn't skip around in the story when writing a biography.
I much prefer a strict chronological telling of a life.
This reader is "okay", but doesn't give much life to the story with his voice.
I loved the story, and since I live in Texas and have visited Fredericksburg many times, touring the museum which now occupies what was once the Nimitz Hotel, I enjoyed hearing all of this history.
I'm so glad to know how honored the Admiral was, and how he stood up as an icon for our country throughout his life.

Hedy Lamarr's life was punctuated by salacious rumors and public scandal, but it was her stunning looks and classic Hollywood glamour that continuously captivated audiences. Born Hedwig Kiesler, she escaped an unhappy marriage with arms dealer Fritz Mandl in Austria to try her luck in Hollywood, where her striking appearance made her a screen legend.

I do not like this reader
Revisado: 01-17-22
The reader's voice goes up and down in regular intervals and it seems like she doesn't really pay attention to what she's reading. Very poor, in my opinion.
Another review said they thought the writer didn't even like Hedy. I can agree with this. Don't even think I'll finish the book - only an hour in. Bummer! What a waste of a credit!

Texas: a land of sprawling diversity and unparalleled richness; a dazzling chapter in the history of our nation; a place like no other on Earth. Through the remarkable lives of four families, this epic saga spans four centuries and two continents and charts the dramatic formation of several great dynasties from the age of the conquistadors to the present day. A richly compelling novel of a proud people eager to meet the challenge of the land, Texas is James Michener's most magnificent achievement.

Texans should all listen to this
Revisado: 01-14-22
Just two comments:
1. When a person is reading a book about Texas, they really need to consult with Texans on the pronunciation of Texas cities and names. Examples: Waxahachie (Walks-a-hachie - NOT Wax-a-hachie); Megargal (Ma-gargle, NOT Me-gar-gal); Miami (Ma-yam-a, NOT Miami like in Florida); 6666 Ranch near Guthrie, TX (4-6 Ranch - a reference to the poker hand by which the guy won the ranch, NOT sixty-six sixty-six). There were a lot more.... Anyway, -nuf said.
2. The reader's delivery seemed stiff - and no special voices for anyone, including women.
The book was great!

Wish this was a more organized story.
Revisado: 09-24-20
I loved learning about this amazing lady, however, I'm disappointed that the telling was so disorganized. I would have preferred it to be chronological. Instead, it skipped around here and there throughout her life with many stories repeated over and over. I will look forward to a better version of her life story.

Historia
Sarah Huckabee Sanders served as White House press secretary for President Donald J. Trump from 2017 to 2019. A trusted confidante of the president, Sanders advised him on everything from press and communications strategy to personnel and policy. She was at the president's side for two and a half years, battling with the media, working with lawmakers and CEOs, and accompanying the president on every international trip, including dozens of meetings with foreign leaders - all while unfailingly exhibiting grace under pressure.

GREAT listen!
Revisado: 09-24-20
Sarah does an amazing job of performing her fabulous book. She is a wonderful story teller, and gives great insight into what the Trump White House was like while she was Press Secretary. I can hardly imagine what it was like to juggle her home life with her husband and children against her overwhelming job, but kudos have to be given to her family for helping her to orchestrate that. She was a powerful spokes-person for our President, and I have very much enjoyed her story.

Revisado: 02-27-20
The story line is "okay", but the performance is very harsh-sounding, and gets worse as time goes on. I'm only into the 2nd books of this set, and I'm done. Don't like this reader AT ALL!

Historia
During a trip to Europe, Christopher Newman, a wealthy American businessman, asks the charming Claire de Cintre to be his wife. To his dismay, he receives an icy reception from the heads of her family, who find Newman to be a vulgar example of the American privileged class. Brilliantly combining elements of comedy, tragedy, romance and melodrama, this tale of thwarted desire vividly contrasts nineteenth-century American and European manners.

Good book / poor narrator
Revisado: 12-02-07
Please consider before buying: The narrator reads in nearly a monotone and sounds like he has no idea how to do expression at all. There are certainly no accents or different voices for the different characters. He has a slight Boston accent and pronounces the word "picture" incorrectly. Since pictures are mentioned frequently, this becomes very irritating. I considered abandoning the book because of the boring narration. Very poor quality - very disappointing!
