Historia
Spensa made it out of the Nowhere, but what she saw in the space between the stars has changed her forever. She came face to face with the Delvers, and finally got answers to the questions she’s had about her own strange Cytonic gifts. The Superiority didn’t stop fighting for galactic dominance while she was gone, though. Spensa’s team, Skyward Flight, was able to hold Winzik off, and even collect allies to help with the cause, but it’s only a matter of time until humanity—and the rest of the galaxy—falls.

Triggered all the emotions I’d hoped for
Revisado: 11-30-23
First the “bad”, for some reason a few of the voices the narrator used changed from the previous books. Not all of them, and not the most important ones, but it was still noticeable. That’s only thing worth noting that other audio listens might want to know. As far as the story goes, I loved it. Not only did Spensa get a good character arc, but all of Defiant did. Not just the individuals, but the society, in a way. I’d guessed one of the big twists, but it was still satisfying to see it play out. As far as the climax being “anticlimactic” as some reviewers have said, I guess I can see their point of view. However, the tension was drawn out over the entire book (and series) so tightly that it’d be hard to create a big enough “boom” to satisfy everyone. I still felt plenty on edge, and plenty emotional by the time it concluded. I love this series, and I’m very happy with the ending. So, although I wish we’d gotten more Mbot (my personal favorite character), I’d highly recommend the book. If you’ve gotten this far in the series, it’s not like you’re NOT going to read it. So, stop reading reviews and just enjoy the denouement.

Historia
Allison Hong is not your typical 15-year-old Taiwanese girl. Unwilling to bend to the conditioning of her Chinese culture, which demands that women submit to men’s will, she disobeys her father’s demand to stay in their faith tradition, Buddhism, and instead joins the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Then, six years later, she drops out of college to serve a mission—a decision for which her father disowns her.

Honest and brave
Revisado: 09-28-22
You’ll laugh, cry, and get angry right along side Allison as she tells her story. Hearing what she went through and how she came through on the other side still smiling is more than motivational, it inspires hope in a world that has lost so much of that. Her raw honesty when telling of moments in her life that she’s less than proud of are relatable and endearing. This is definitely worth a read (or listen). There’s a good reason this book has won the awards it has.
*The narrator was hard to get used to, I found increasing the speed really helped. Don’t give up! It’s beautifully done once you fully sync with the voice.

Delightful
Revisado: 06-22-21
This story reminded me of something an old librarian might tell to gathered students each week on her bright orange carpet. I could see her hand motions and feel the enthusiasm through the beautiful performance of the voice actor. Absolutely something I’d recommend again and again.
My sole complaint with the book would be the repetitiveness on some subjects. I wanted to move past those and get on with the story. In some cases it was part of the prose, in others I had to realize that this is more of a child’s story, so complicated thing needed repeating. Just beware of that. All in all, it is so well done that you hardly notice.

Historia
The colonists from the Pathfinder have arrived on Kaguya, a planet with low gravity but a very dense atmosphere. It’s fun to jump around, but the air makes you loopy - and worse than that, the heavy atmosphere means that wind storms, although rare, are absolutely devastating. Zero and Nyx help to get everything locked down before the first big storm, but they stumble onto a group of thieves who have stolen some mining equipment. Before the kids have a chance to get away and tell anyone, the storm hits and the massive winds carry them far away.

Fun and imaginative story, hard to get used to audiostory telling style.
Revisado: 10-22-20
I really loved the story and being able to explore the planet along with the characters. However, it’s strange to have music, sound effects and several voice actors. Strange to me anyway. It took some getting used to. And although I really enjoyed the story, I’m not sure I’m personally a fan of turning a book into an audio only movie. Also, they made the MC sound like he’s 8 instead of 12 (I have a 12 year old, they don’t sound that young), so that was odd. Overall though, it was worth the listen and I’d recommend it to others.

Historia
In 1985, Anthony Ray Hinton was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder in Alabama. Stunned, confused, and only 29 years old, Hinton knew that it was a case of mistaken identity and believed that the truth would prove his innocence and ultimately set him free. But with an incompetent defense attorney and a different system of justice for a poor black man in the South, Hinton was sentenced to death by electrocution. He spent his first three years on Death Row at Holman State Prison in despairing silence.

There are some stories that stay with you forever, and there are some that ALSO change you forever. This one is the latter. I think anyone who is pro-death penalty, as I was, will read this book or give it a listen and carefully consider that stance. There are so crimes so horrendous that it’s unthinkable to allow the perpetrator to live out there own life, even if it is behind bars, but very few cases have irrefutable evidence against the accused. Anyway...just read, you’ll see.

Great story as usual, but...
Revisado: 09-24-20
Loved the story. Lots of imaginative, yet believable world building going on. However, I didn’t like the music. It felt like it was forcing my emotions, like a movie does. Not that the writing didn’t lead into those same emotions, but it was distracting. The ending, while satisfying on most levels still left enough holes for me to be wishing there was just a bit more to wrap it up better. Either way, it’s well worth the listen.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

If I could give 6 stars, I would.
Revisado: 08-27-20
Not only was this written in a way that was entertaining and informative, but the information I took in changed my perspective entirely. There are very few books that can claim that for me, and I read quite a lot. I believe every man, woman and child should read or listen to this book and consider the good that could be done in this world if we all had gave a little bit of mercy to each other.

Wasn’t what I expected, in a good way.
Revisado: 05-15-20
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a Santa story that was already set up to be so different. I suppose I thought it would be funny like Elf, rather than funny like that episode of American Dad where they battle Santa (if you know, you know...if not, sorry for the obscure reference). Anyway, once I got used to the narration, I became completely immersed in the story and absolutely loved it. I read it in the summer while mowing the lawn and prepping my garden, yet still felt the magic of the Christmas season and enjoyed the unexpected darker humor. Definitely worth the read. I highly recommend The Santa Squad for a short, fun read any time of year.

No closure
Revisado: 04-04-20
*slight spoiler, no details*
I’m not sure if this is setting up for a sequel or not, but at the very least only a handful of the problems presented in the blurb are resolved. So, it’s realistic, but the pretty bow that stories are usually wrapped up in was definitely missing. I felt the tension, frustration and horror at how newly freed slaves were treated that I was expecting. I wanted that education. I loved the book for that alone, but the story itself just didn’t sit well for some reason. It feels unfinished.

Great idea, not my favorite style
Revisado: 01-26-20
For me, the story was interesting and the research into the era the main character jumps to was very intriguing and thought provoking. HOWEVER, it could have been half the length it was, and twice the length at the same time. Half, because the entire portion that took place in the "present" was redundant and could have been reduced by two thirds. Twice the length as well because certain moments that could have been very emotionally moving were glossed over. In all, I couldn't recommend this book, but I suppose that's just because the style isn't for me. I have great respect for the amount of research done, and the vivid details used for the 1300 visitation, but it really dragged for me in general.
