Historia
Sisters Vera and Marya were brought up as good Soviets: obedient despite hardships of poverty and tragedy, committed to communist ideals, and loyal to Stalin. Several years after fighting on the Eastern front, both women find themselves deep in the mire of conflicts shaping a new world order in 1947 Berlin. When Marya, an interpreter, gets entangled in Vera’s cryptic web of deceit and betrayal, she must make desperate choices to survive—and protect those she loves.

Great listen. I looked forward to it every day
Revisado: 05-07-25
Nice inner weaving of fictional character development and storyline with historical accuracy of the Cold War. It was a bit difficult to keep track between the story shifting between 1947 and nine years later. That was the only part of the book that made it less enjoyable. There were quite a bit of times where the older sister was questioning what mission her younger sister had been on which was puzzling to me because she had put her on that mission. I imagine she must’ve been narrating her case building for others but that was not made clear through narration or intonation. Overall a good story

Gripping balance of history & strory
Revisado: 03-29-25
How can a book about becoming a woman during the Russian Revolution be untouched by tragedy and sadness? I read some tough reviews of this book which were so wrong. People said it was dark- consider the time and place! I was gripped like Outlander grips me.
The research and detail this author used are incredible. The narrator was a perfect fit with pleasant accent and intonation who brought the story to life. This was no bourgeois romp. I could not have predicted the twists and turns. Marina is a character you feel for and can admire. I will listen to #2

Interesting but then was rushed with an odd twist toward the end that didn’t make sense
Revisado: 12-29-24
The ending was weird and rushed and parts of the story were very slow moving. The last few chapters were out of sync with the rest of the book. It was improbable and rushed which made it the frustrating ending. Not a favorite

Great character development
Interesting story- would have liked more details on main charater’s family. Book could have been an hour longer. Great reader!!
I liked it better than the Bridgerton books!

Historia
By the time we become adults, most of us have joined the religion of suffering, which preaches that unless circumstances are controlled, life will be a mess. We compare ourselves to others and speculate about an impossible-to-know future, holding out hope for an improved life through getting ahead, fulfilling passion, or finding true love. But the idea that happiness comes from putting effort toward altering one’s circumstances is harmful and backward. What if we instead learned to understand that circumstances can rarely be controlled, and that life is, and always will be, messy?

Must read- new insights & personal stories from Cy
Revisado: 04-05-22
I found every chapter of this book to have new information that built on Cy’s previous books in a masterful way. Cy is authentic and open with her vulnerabilities and challenges. I feel blessed to have her “company” in the struggle and her insight to be open to new information and multiple things being true. I am not even through this book and have already shared it with my network and family. This is exactly what I needed right now. Thank you!

Masterfully imagined, written and read
Revisado: 03-28-21
I struggled to stick with this book through the first couple of chapters and ot seemed overly poetic and rambling. I am so glad that I did not put it away and allowed it to unfurl at its pace. This is an intelligent and moving story. The narrator enhances the story with his flawless intonations and pace.
