Surprising!
Revisado: 03-15-20
An odd premise for a story - I was completely engaged. The narrator is perfect for this piece. At times it’s laugh out loud funny and introspective other times. It’s good all the way to the last sentence!
Well written and satisfying. Perfect for a road trip or working around the house.

All struggle after Chapter 1
Revisado: 11-25-19
How I LOVED the Night Circus. I pre-ordered The Starless Sea, knowing I'd love it. But, doggone this one really let me down.
The narrative feels forced and mostly irrelevant. I couldn't even finish it after putting in 8+ hours. I kept hoping to find the charm, to knit the story threads, but they were too bland and lackluster.
Terribly sorry for the disappointing review. I was truly disappointed, myself.

Historia
Inheritance is an audiobook about secrets - secrets within families, kept out of shame or self-protectiveness; secrets we keep from one another in the name of love. It is the story of a woman's urgent quest to unlock the story of her own identity, a story that has been scrupulously hidden from her for more than 50 years, years she had spent writing brilliantly, and compulsively, on themes of identity and family history.

Revisado: 06-15-19
Inheritance was a surprise! The subject matter doesn't relate to me, whatsoever, but Ms. Shapiro created THE most compelling story I have listened to on Audible. I cried, I was up until 3:00 am listening. Couldn't get enough of this book.
I am incredibly impressed - and I am not easily impressed.

Ugh - skip this one
Revisado: 06-15-19
The sampler narrative sounded so promising. Ms Rosenblat did what she could with the text, but the story is so thin and utterly pointless, I can't believe that there were so many good reviews.
How could this be so empty?

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

I’m not sure why other reviewers gave this one such hype. It felt like a game of Clue, but the characters felt arbitrary and thin.
Don’t feel bad about passing on this one if you enjoy good writing.
However, if you simply want a shallow mystery as background noise, this might be just what you need.

Historia
A brilliant literary debut, inspired by a true story: the final days of a young woman accused of murder in Iceland in 1829. Set against Iceland's stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution. Horrified at the prospect of housing a convicted murderer, the family at first avoids Agnes. Only Tóti, a priest Agnes has mysteriously chosen to be her spiritual guardian, seeks to understand her.

Bravo! A Hundred Times, Bravo!!
Revisado: 05-03-19
This story is amazing - based on a true story, the author has developed a slowly building tone reminiscent of the Icelandic landscape. And truly, Morven Christie as the narrator has created an absolutely stunning performance. She captures the voices and emotion, I daresay, better than any other narrator I've listened to in the last several years.
Bravo! A hundred times, Bravo!
Give it time, the beginning paints the picture of the situation and conditions in Iceland in the early 1800's. Before you know it, you will not be able to stop listening. I have several hundred stories in my audible library and this one out-ranks all of them.
Haunting and deep, don't miss this performance. I could gush on, but instead, I think I'll go back and listen again. Tremendously good story!

Historia
Renowned poet and critic Clive James presents the crowning achievement of his career: a monumental translation into English verse of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. The Divine Comedy is the precursor of modern literature, and this translation - decades in the making - gives us the entire epic as a single, coherent and compulsively listenable lyric poem. Written in the early 14th century and completed in 1321, the year of Dante’s death, The Divine Comedy is perhaps the greatest work of epic poetry ever composed.
