interesting story but drags on too long
Revisado: 05-25-24
I couldn't finish it. It started out interesting enough but I found the main character's self pity and her obsession with the guy who dumped her 18 years ago really irritating. When I got to the point where it felt like the story should be wrapping up, I found I still had almost 1/2 of the book to go and didn't really care who committed the murders.

Spilet Alert
Revisado: 12-20-21
Don't read if you don't know how this ends.
The plot was enjoyable and I guess Miss Silver figured out who did it but the killer wasn't caught through her actions or deductions. The outcome would have been the same whether she was there or not so I was a little disappointed by this one.

Historia
The Black Moth, the literary debut of the British author Georgette Heyer, is set around the 1750s. The intricate plot involves the nobility - good and bad - as they indulge in abduction, cheating at card games, duels, highway robbery, and elopement. Fortunately, repentance intervenes and all the threads come together in a happy ending.

Good story distracting narration
Revisado: 08-14-20
This being Heyer's first novel, you can see the beginnings of the humor and wonderful characterizations that are even more apparent in her later works. The main thing that bothered me was the narrator's voice for most of the characters. She managed to make them all sound like 70 yr. old men and women despite most of them being around 30 or younger. My favorite narrators are those that make me forget that I'm listening to a single person by developing a unique and appropriate voice for each character.

Historia
The tangled destinies of an unusual family are played out against the backdrop of the English countryside where two pretty sisters and a beautiful widow take centre stage in a drama of dangerous flirtation and backstairs gossip. Esther Musgrave, an attractive widow, has her hands full trying to keep her energetic family together – and on speaking terms! Her three daughters, prickly Delia, sensible Meg and carefree Rose, mean everything to her, especially since the death of her husband, Charles.

Typical DE Stevenson but not among my favorites.
Revisado: 06-11-20
The narration was great and the story similar to many of DE Stevenson's books in that it followed the lives of one family for a period of time. However, I never really warmed up to the Musgrave family, I think because I found them rather humorless and borng compared to characters in her other books which are primarily set in Scotland.

Improbable Father Max
Revisado: 07-09-19
I kept listening, waiting for the story to grab my interest, but it never really did. The whole time Max was wandering around the abbey I was wishing he was back in his own village with its more colorful inhabitants.
The solution to the crime was of the, "pull a rabbit out of a hat" variety and so convoluted it was hard to follow. Or maybe I just didn't care about any of the characters enough to bother paying attention

Good stories - narration volume inconsistent
Revisado: 06-15-19
I enjoyed the first three stories in the series and like Neil Dudgeon's narration except that the volume didn't stay at a consistent volume, which made it hard to always hear what he was saying. It sounded like he was turning away from the microphone periodically (think Lina Lamont in "Singing in the Rain" recording with a microphone hidden in a corsage on her dress.) The dropping of the volume may have been for artistic emphasis or something but I felt like I was constantly adjusting it up and down.

Historia
When Persephone Lancaster receives a marriage proposal from the ill-tempered Duke of Kielder, she refuses - and then reconsiders. The obscene sum of money he's offering Persephone would save her family from ruin. With her characteristic optimism, she travels to the far reaches of Northumberland to wed a greatly feared stranger. Lodged deep in a thick forest infested with wild dogs, the Duke's castle is as cold and forbidding as the Duke himself, a man with terrible scars on his body and his soul.

Good story, off-putting narration
Revisado: 11-19-18
I almost returned this selection after listening to the first few minutes due to the narration. Listening to an historical British novel with someone reading in an American accent turned me off. I'm glad I gave it a second chance since I eventually did enjoy the story and was able to ignore the narration. I really enjoy audible books where the narrator's voice either naturally fits the characters or they have the range and talent to adapt their voice to different characters, infusing each with a distinct personality. This narrator was OK for Persephone but too high pitched for the men's voices.

It passed the time
Revisado: 03-18-12
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I listen on the way to and from work everyday so the time couldn't have been used for much else anyway.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The story was about what you expect from current historical romances - characters saying and doing things they would never have done. If you don't mind that, the story was good.
What didn???t you like about James Clamp???s performance?
Worst American accent ever. The heroine and her cousin were from New England but the reader kept slipping some sort of southern drawl in sporadically.
