40 something man vs 20 yr old girl gross x many
Revisado: 03-10-25
Mr. King. I like this book. Its good, But there are numerous books where you find it interesting to couple a 40-45 old man with a 20 yr old woman who is incredibly beautiful, hot, etc. Its just too much. I dont mean to offend but please stop. No wonder there are so many comments in the reviews you are some type of pedophile.
If this is a issue you are working through, ok. But pls consider how gross this appear. This book, for example, isnt a quick attraction because you see the local cafe girl. This is deep romantic connection you develop, a soulmate type undying love over many chapters that does not quit that your life quest is about her well-being.
I dont believe all 40 yr old men are looking for some fullfillment in this way, they can be ok with noticing a young lady is attractive and leave it there.
Your fixation is gross.
Other than that I applaud the action conducted at a fast pace throughout. Very good.
I always love the tie-ins with the creepy hotel that burnt down. Its always a pleasure to have this resurrected.
Mr. King additionally I believe this is left over material that didnt make it into 11/22/63. You worked hard on your research so why not, I do think it works in this book.
Thank you.

Trump bashing & woke crap overload.
Revisado: 03-07-25
I dont think King can help himself. Almost every chapter has woke propoganda, negative Trump comments, or lowlife Trump fans bumbling their way through pathetic lives. Every single character who likes Trump is stupid, clueless, uninformed. Its offensive.
King gets more leftist by the book. If that's your thing, proceed.
I enjoyed the Holly Gibney character throughout several books including the Bill Hodges series. This was the least interesting Holly book. The minimal appearances of previously main supporting characters weakened the book. The Barbara subplot was stupid and unbelievable.
The plot was ok. Not particularly scary.
The narrator was good but not right for this book. She changed the feeling of Holly by most of the time using a bright, confident, optimistic voice, That is not the neurotic, awkward, likeable Holly revealed in previous books.
This isn't one of King's best books. I hope he pulls it together to continue the Holly series in a less political tone. I would like to see hapless Holly transform to occasional superhero with a terrifying plot. Bring her to life with a connected narrator.

I had no idea this man has such amazing depth and energy. All of these Audible Sleep stories by Stamos are absolutely wonderful. He's very soothing, like having a old comforting old freind along for the hay ride.

Historia
Since his wife died, Ralph Roberts has been having trouble sleeping. Each night he wakes up a bit earlier until he's barely sleeping at all. During his late-night walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. He sees colored ribbons streaming from people's heads, two strange little men wandering around town after dark, and more. He begins to suspect that these visions are something more than hallucinations brought on by lack of sleep.

Non-med cure for insomnia, yawn.
Revisado: 02-06-25
Pros: Very likable main male character, spunky older guy. Amazing narration by Eli Wallach, probably one of the only reasons I stuck with it as long as I did.
Cons: Boring as hell. This is first King book I stalled to finish. It literally put me to sleep it was so boring.
Weird beings from another realm who were not interesting.
The pro-abortion crowd takes over and insane pro-life activists do their damage.
I'm getting sick of the Liberal bend of almost all King books. All conservatives are crazy wingnuts with no degrees of separation. I enjoy King but it gets annoying. I don't mind a liberal here and there but King seems to have a narrow spectrum, a grandiose save-the-world philosophy only the ultra rich bleat from behind safe walls. He would be a magnificent writer if he could deeply embrace the conservative viewpoint as well.
This had the worst music mix of any Stephen King Audible book. The music itself was fine, the volume is insanely loud. Jarring and unncessary at the end of every chapter. I've only had one prior King book where the music was a positive addition (Needful Things) so perhaps end it.
Overall, not a fan of this book but one great main character and stellar narration saved the day.

Useful for domestic abuse survivors
Revisado: 01-18-25
I appreciate how King can step into various roles ranging from traumatized abused spouse to evil crazy husband. Good character development.
It was thrilling! Rosie finds her voice and place after many years of vicious physical abuse. King describes the confusion and terror a typical abuse victim has when challenged with creating a new better life.
It may be good for domestic abuse survivors to hear the machinations of the husband as reality sinks in he is losing the game. The psychological effects of abuse are hard to overcome but as Rosie gathers strength she realizes she's her own hero.
Did not like the music much but it was still a good listen.
King has been surprising me with his depth and varied topics.

Historia
Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

Outstanding!
Revisado: 01-10-25
Wow! This raised the bar, best of all King books. Non-stop wild action. I couldn't stop listening.
The character development was incredible! I was interested in each character, as the story flips back and forth it was easy to follow.
It's spiritually complex with a dose of evil. As characters become under influence of a demonic agent all hell breaks loose.
King must have been have been drinking medicated coffee as he crafted this mayhem. It was great fun! I loved it.
This is the ONLY book that includes music between chapters where the musc actually adds something rather than becomes annoying. It provided interest and momentum.

Least favorite King
Revisado: 01-07-25
I didnt like or connect with the plot. It was weird and confusing.
The death of the wife in beginning of book was not believable. I appreciated the details as the main character grapples with grief for years after the accident, especially his avoidance of the house the story is centered upon. The house had special meaning for his deceased wife, more than happy family memories.
Im fine with the older 40s man meets 20 yr old beauty but it just wasn't done in a believable way. The romance onset was too awkward,
The insertion of the music throughout = completely annoying!!! Especially if trying to fall asleep.
King puts such effort into his works. I feel bad giving a mediocre rating. Yet so many aspects fell flat, didn't provide enough interest. The main male character was in-depth, otherwise i don't feel there was enough development to the others from the villians, secret-keepers, POIs.
King should always narrate his own books. It adds major impact and drama and saved this from getting an even lower rating.

Muchacho 200x = Seriously annoying.
Revisado: 12-21-24
Stephen King's personal injury and rehab may have contributed to main character development. It was a valuable ingredient that may appeal to those facing life-changing physical and mental challenges.
A shattering accident leads to mental anguish, despair, and eventual reconciliation of a new way of life and opening to previously untapped psychic power.
The Duma Key location evoked great beauty and mystery. It was a pleasurable part of the book.
The bromance quality between the two main characters was charming and poignant, Fond not sexual.
For the most part, the plot was not believable, from the main character's meteorite entry into the art world to the evil doll character.
The way his daughter's death was treated was not on par with his deep love for his favorite child.
I found the story devolved after that point.
King's treatment of psychometry and remote viewing was an interesting main component. He has a handle on psychic energy, i.e. the "itch" to transcend time past, present, future by drawing premonitions including specific elements of a future event. It does increase the creepy factor.
If I hear the word "Muchacho" one more time Im going to blow a gasket.
King always is some degree of superb but this wasn't a favorite.

Narration was outstanding, story not so powerful.
Revisado: 12-18-24
I loved the beginning of this book with the old man helping the young high school man, very good and engaging. Great character development. But I was less interested in the "fairy tale" world that comprised the rest of the book. I didnt feel the characters were as compelling. The scary characters didnt hold my attention and seemed one dimensional. I wasnt feeling the burn.
I do appreciate King more after this effort. It does show his talent in different genres and I will try more. I was raised on Firestarter. Looking forward to his other works.

Historia
When Laurie was a little girl, she was forbidden to enter the room at the top of the stairs. It was one of many rules imposed by her cold, distant father. Now, in a final act of desperation, her father has exorcised his demons. But when Laurie returns to claim the estate with her husband and 10-year-old daughter, it's as if the past refuses to die. She feels it lurking in the broken moldings, sees it staring from an empty picture frame, hears it laughing in the moldy greenhouse deep in the woods.

Disappointing.
Revisado: 12-08-24
I expect better from this author. It was not his best but I feel he will improve with age. This plot line was weak. The horror element was not cohesive.
The "ghost" element of the little girl who appears in new form through a current young girl was weird and not convincing.
Narration was good.
