Historia
When Aurelie Harcourt's father dies in debtor's prison, he leaves her just two things: his wealthy family, whom she has never met, and his famous pen name, Nathaniel Droll. Her new family greets her with apathy and even resentment. Only the quiet houseguest, Silas Rotherham, welcomes her company. When Aurelie decides to complete her father's unfinished serial novel, she must keep her identity as Nathaniel Droll hidden while searching for the truth about her mother's disappearance - and perhaps even her father's death.

This is some cheesy drivel. Not sure why the algorithm thought I’d like it. Bad writing, silly, stereotypes.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Stereotyped characters, one annoying performance
Revisado: 05-01-23
This fascinating story is weakened by some very two-dimensional characters and a weak “subplot”
Involving an Australian scientist and a British student working on a research project. Also, what is Jackson Pollack doing in this story?!? Too much going on. Also, I can’t stand listening to readers like the guy who narrates the section about the stable worker who is closest to Lexington. He reads as if he has no idea what he’s reading — vocal expression totally detached from meaning. Leans very heavily on a deeply melodramatic intonation, which drove me nuts.

Historia
Fleeing a disastrous marriage, Helen Huntingdon retreats to the desolate mansion, Wildfell Hall, with her son, Arthur. There, she makes her living as a painter. Finding it difficult to avoid her neighbors, she is soon an object of speculation and gossip. Brontë portrays Helen's eloquent struggle for independence at a time when society defined a married woman as her husband's property.

Infuriating main characters but a terrific book
Revisado: 01-29-23
I had never read Anne Brontë and thought I would start by listening to this novel, and I’m so glad I did. This story is told from the perspectives of the two, prideful main characters, and they are equally misguided, at times, though Helen is absolutely a victim of the times in which she lives and struggles between a rock and a hard place. The two main characters are voiced very well (good casting) and sub characters are voiced with enough nuance to make them easy to distinguish. It’s a very satisfying listen, and now I’m going to go find more Anne Brontë.

Historia
A coming-of-age tale for the young and naïve 17-year-old Catherine Morland, Northanger Abbey takes a decidedly comical look at themes of class, family, love and literature. Revelling in the sensationalist - and extremely popular - Gothic fiction of her day, the story follows Catherine out of Bath to the lofty manor of the Tilneys, where her overactive imagination gets to work constructing an absurd and melodramatic explanation for the death of Mrs Tilney, which threatens to jeopardise her newly forged friendships.

Historia
It is the height of summer, and Armand and Reine-Marie Gamache are celebrating their wedding anniversary at Manoir Bellechasse, an isolated, luxurious inn not far from the village of Three Pines. But they're not alone. The Finney family - rich, cultured, and respectable - has also arrived for a celebration of their own. The beautiful Manoir Bellechasse might be surrounded by nature, but there is something unnatural looming.

Historia
War-weary Berlin has much to offer Leonard Markham, a young, naive postal engineer: first the arts of sophisticated intrigue, then the delights of sexual pleasure. But Leonard's new knowledge carries a heavy price, dragging him and the listener into a new type of story that is exhaustively suspenseful and utterly irresistible.

More love story than espionage thriller
Revisado: 10-30-22
We liked this a lot — great narration, the usual great characters, story and dialogue we’ve come to expect from Ian McEwan — but we were slightly misled by its categorization in the Audible catalogue as a spy thriller. Still really recommend (with one trigger warning about an extremely long and explicit description of a gory act of violence… we kinda fast-forwarded through it).

Historia
English anthropologist Andrew Bankson has been alone in the field for several years, studying the Kiona river tribe in the territory of New Guinea. Haunted by the memory of his brothers' deaths and increasingly frustrated and isolated by his research, Bankson is on the verge of suicide when a chance encounter with colleagues, the controversial Nell Stone and her wry and mercurial Australian husband, Fen, pulls him back from the brink. Nell and Fen have just fled the bloodthirsty Mumbanyo and, in spite of Nell's poor health, are hungry for a new discovery.

Good story: overwrought, annoying female narrator
Revisado: 09-25-22
I wish I had read this book instead of listening to it because it’s a compelling tale, a kind of anthropological love story. I dislike Xe Sands’ breathy, nasal, almost unintelligible style so much that I was grateful for how little of the book required her participation. Simon Vance is always solid.

Historia
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Absolutely essential memoir/treatise on the importance of finding meaning in our lives by Holocaust survivor/psychologist Viktor Frankl. This is a short, powerful book that makes sense of so much of the pain and suffering of human beings.

Alaska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead, and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. Childless, they are drifting apart - he breaking under the weight of the work of the farm; she crumbling from loneliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning the snow child is gone - but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees. This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods.

Could not stand the narrator
Revisado: 07-28-22
I will never again buy a book read by this person. Every sentence is breathless and there is no variety in the pace or intonation. It’s as if she has no idea what she’s reading. I may read this book the old-fashioned way but couldn’t stand this performance.

If the narrator’s awful Southern accents don’t kill you, the absurd story will. Can’t understand the enthusiasm for this cloying novel.
