Historia
The daughter of an artist, Helen Tworkov grew up in the heady climate of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism; yet from an early age, she questioned the value of Western cultural norms. At the age of twenty-two, she set off for Japan, then traveled through Cambodia, India, and eventually to Tibetan refugee camps in Nepal. Set against the arresting cultural backdrop of the sixties and their legacy, this intimate self-portrait depicts Tworkov's search for a true home but also into the ways each of us can better understand and transform ourselves.

A Remarkable Life
Revisado: 11-06-24
I enjoyed this much more than I had anticipated. Helen’s extraordinary life journey had me laughing, gasping, crying and shaking my head over the breadth and depths of her experiences. The Buddhist way is fascinating to me and I aspire to deepening my understanding. As a side note, I have to shake my head and chuckle at the reviewers here who complained that she “gets political” at the end. It’s HER autobiography, for Pete’s sake. Her truth. And she tells the TRUTH that may be uncomfortable for some to hear. But, come on…. If you’re reading a book about a Buddhist’s journey, honor her journey. And take her (and Buddha’s) advice: if something makes you uncomfortable, sit with it. See what happens.

What a fabulous book!!!! Now one of my all-time favorite Audible presentations. It’s a huge story told through so many different beings: human (alive and not-quite-dead), beasts, bugs …. Burst-out-laughing funny in some parts, hair-raising in others and always poignant. I flew through it. Highly, highly recommended.

NOT JUST FOE 12-STEPPERS!!!!!
Revisado: 04-16-23
Wow. I was completely taken aback at how much this book would “sing” to me. I am a member of a 12-step program supporting family members of alcoholics. I’m not a fan of the Catholic Church so wasn’t sure how I would react to this. But Rohr has transcended all the dogma and doctrine and gotten straight to the truth. His inclusion and acknowledgment of Buddhist thinking and non-catholic ideologies forms a bond of trust between him and the reader/listener. I have since bought a copy of the book to reference over and over again in my spiritual recovery journey. This book isn’t just for 12-steppers or Christians!!! It is for ALL HUMAN BEINGS longing to find meaning and connection in this life. (The only reason I only gave 4 stars for performance is because I would have loved to have heard Richard Rohr’s own voice, rather than an actor’s.)

A Disappointing Turn …
Revisado: 03-28-23
What could have been a really great historical novel became a bodice-ripper about halfway through. And while the character narration was spot-on at times, when it came to the English women — they became screech owls. Almost unbearable to listen to. I have enjoyed other Gregory novels, but not this one.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Pure joy
Revisado: 12-13-22
One of the best books I have listened to in years. Concept, storyline, characters and performance were all just wonderful. Sure, there were a few contrivances in the plot but I didn’t let them stand in the way of my enjoyment. Just roll with it and have a good time. Long live anthropomorphism!

Chet and Bernie take Rocket out for a good meal, during the course of which Rocket refers to their class's prom queen, who supposedly vanished in a mysterious way.

Lovely, light and FUNNY! Anyone who anthropomorphizes (and you know who you are!) will have such a good time listening to this. Start with Dog On It and continue with Bark to the Future….. and then I guess we wait for the next one. Great narration, too.

Everything I want in a good “read”

The perfect combination of great story, great writing and great performance. Ancient tales in novel form bring gods and goddesses to life, and show how human even THEY can be. Fabulous!
