Historia
It is 935 A.D., and the North is in turmoil. King Harald Fairhair has died, leaving the High Seat of the realm to his murderous son, Erik Bloodaxe. To solidify his claim, Erik ruthlessly disposes of all claimants to his throne, save one: his youngest brother Hakon. Erik's surviving enemies send a ship to Wessex, where the Christian King Athelstan is raising Hakon. Unable to avoid his fate, he returns to the Viking North to face his brother and claim his birthright, only to discover that victory will demand sacrifices beyond his wildest nightmares.

Old vs New
Revisado: 06-04-21
This human sacrifice in this book made feel grateful that the old gods were replaced. The author brought this aspect to life. The romanticism around vikings is understandable (I certainly am guilty of it), but the reality of the brutality and callousness of their society feels so absolutely foreign. Håkon provides a very compelling character at this intersection between the frankly evil old ways and the good. I recommend Tom Holland's 'Dominion' for a more academic and thorough analysis of just how revolutionary 'the white Christ' has been in changing and shaping our values. Ha det bra!

Historia
Prince Lyov Nikolayevitch Myshkin is one of the great characters in Russian literature. Is he a saint or just naïve? Is he an idealist or, as many in General Epanchin's society feel, an "idiot"? Certainly his return to St. Petersburg after years in a Swiss clinic has a dramatic effect on the beautiful Aglaia, youngest of the Epanchin daughters, and on the charismatic but willful Nastasya Filippovna. As he paints a vivid picture of Russian society, Dostoyevsky shows how principles conflict with emotions - with tragic results.

We all should be Prince Myshkin.
Revisado: 07-31-20
We all should be Prince Myshkin. I didn't know what to expect -- this is my 4th Dostoyevsky book in a very short period of time. I think Prince Myshkin is one of my favorite characters from fiction now. The first half of the book was Soo absolutely wonderful ... I'm still digesting the second half. As with most Dostoyevsky books, half the value comes from the digestion!

Historia
A century after it first appeared, Crime and Punishment remains one of the most gripping psychological thrillers. A poverty-stricken young man, seeing his family making sacrifices for him, is faced with an opportunity to solve his financial problems with one simple but horrifying act: the murder of a pawnbroker. She is, he feels, just a parasite on society. But does the end justify the means? Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov makes his decision and then has to live with it.

Great book!!!
Revisado: 07-23-20
Dostoyevsky is amazing. This is the third book of his that I have listened to in 3 months. For some reason I did not expect to enjoy this one as much as the Brothers Karamazov or the Possessed; I was mostly wrong (to my happiness). I chose this version due to the narrator. I have not mentioned him in my previous reviews, but compliments are due to the narrator -- very pleasing voice and convincing range of styles -- this is particularly useful when capturing Dostoyevsky's brilliance!!

Historia
Also known as Demons, The Possessed is a powerful socio-political novel about revolutionary ideas and the radicals behind them. It follows the career of Pyotr Stepanovich Verkhovensky, a political terrorist who leads a group of nihilists on a demonic quest for societal breakdown. They are consumed by their desires and ideals, and have surrendered themselves fully to the darkness of their "demons". This possession leads them to engulf a quiet provincial town and subject it to a storm of violence.

Excellent, excellent, excellent...
Revisado: 07-03-20
...a wonderfully entertaining critique of nihilism (so skillfully penned by Dostoevsky's hand and mind). Stepan and Varvara might as well be boomer college dean and donors (respectively)... Pyotr might as well be a... a young narcissistic Marxist agitator... oddly relevant to today. The 'Girl-Student' and 'Boy Student' are wonderful mirrors for 'educated' thought today. Again, wonderfully entertaining (even outside of it's psychological and social relevance).

Historia
Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a titanic figure among the world's great authors, and The Brothers Karamazov is often hailed as his finest novel. A masterpiece on many levels, it transcends the boundaries of a gripping murder mystery to become a moving account of the battle between love and hate, faith and despair, compassion and cruelty, good and evil.

So relevant to our day....
Revisado: 06-19-20
Such a breath of fresh air!!! In this age where Audible seems to be tripping over itself to recommend books tainted with poisonous reductionist Ideology that feeds on resentment and kafkatrapping, it's nice to listen to a novel where the one of the central moral lessons is the opposite of the self righteous temptation to point the accusing finger at your neighbor. Imagine, a book where a lesson is that we all have a small part in the evil of this world; Russian authors are fairly good at expressing this theme. It was also a nice escape from the moral relativism and an entertaining critique of nihilism all through the development of engaging characters. Lastly, it was eerie during certain chapters -- considering this book predated the relatively less talked about but horrific tradgedies and misery of Eastern Europe that consumed so many lives during the 20th century. True genius.

One of the most popular and beloved introductions to the concept of faith ever written, Mere Christianity has sold millions of copies worldwide. This audiobook brings together C. S. Lewis' legendary radio broadcasts during the war years, in which he set out simply to "explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times."

Lewis helped you answer many questions that I had... and then some at I didn't know I had. Both types of answers were quite edifying. He provides explanations without heavy dogmatism; He is thoughtful rather than formulaic. Great book... on which I look forward to revisiting many times!

Today, the US Constitution is the oldest, continually-operating instrument of government in the world. But to think of the Constitution as a fully-formed, canonical document is to miss out on an honest, well-rounded grasp of American history. Now, more than ever, any well-informed citizen should understand how the Constitution lives, breathes, and endures.

Revisado: 04-21-18
The last 10 minutes of the entire lecture series is the most important commentary (and the most relevant for our day) that I have heard from anyone since I finished consuming the Gulag Archipelago. Excellent narrator... I would also recommend his lecture series on the American Revolution.

Historia
This second volume in Solzhenitsyn’s narrative chronicles the appalling inhumanity of the Soviets' "Destructive-Labor Camps" and the fate of prisoners in them—felling timber, building canals and railroads, and mining gold without equipment or adequate food or clothing, and subject always to the caprices of the camp authorities. Most tragic of all is the life of the women prisoners and the luckless children they bear.

In this masterpiece, Solzhenitsyn has orchestrated thousands of incidents and individual histories into one narrative of unflagging power and momentum. Written in a tone that encompasses Olympian wrath, bitter calm, savage irony, and sheer comedy, it combines history, autobiography, documentary, and political analysis as it examines in its totality the Soviet apparatus of repression from its inception following the October Revolution of 1917.

I don't know where to start... Amazing
Revisado: 12-18-17
I listened to this book immediately after listening to 1984; what a surreal experiment that was. I have already purchased volume 2.
This is a perspective changing book. The reading of it (or I should say, listening to it in our case) provides a safeguard against tyranny. Instead, most students today are taught Derrida and Foucault; these young minds will become more and more susceptible to the temptation of self perceived victimhood and subsequently an unhealthy obsession with jealousy and revenge.
The middle is filled with such detail that can be a bit hard to digest, but overall this detail is necessary for Solzhenitsyn to make his case. I found the audiobook format excellent -- maybe even preferable to reading the print for this reason. The narrator did a fine job.

Rolf, son of Hiarandi the Unlucky, is a character who exemplifies the effect of Christ's teachings upon the Icelandic people during their heroic age. The book is set in Iceland in the days when Christianity has come to the island though the old customs still linger. Hiarandi, at the urging of his wife, does an unprecedented thing: he lights a signal fire on a dangerous point of his land, thereby challenging the accepted custom which places lucrative salvage at higher value than the saving of life.
