Historia
In the wake of the Galactic Republic's fall, Magnus and the Gladio Umbra learn of a new superpower that hopes to unite all orphaned star systems in peace. But Magnus's suspicions grow as the Luma Alliance of Worlds uses anything but peaceful methods to co-opt allegiance in the post-Republic landscape. Meanwhile, on the fringe of the galaxy, a dark shadow looms. Moldark, the sworn enemy of a growing number of species, amasses power through a new partnership with the Obscura. With their combined forces, there is no telling what evil may rain down upon the galaxy's sentient worlds.

Every character sounds the same...
Revisado: 10-01-23
I am enjoying these books less and less. Sorry.
I like the story. I like the characters.
The narration has been difficult to tolerate. I have to speed it up to x1.15 to prevent myself from getting really irritated at the incredibly slow pacing and lack of energy. All the women have two basic templates for voice and the men seem to have three. I hear support characters chime in, but because it is template #1, I think it is Magnus who has been changed to sounding like he has a chest cold whenever he speaks.
I feel guilty making these comments because I want to be a fan - it's just difficult to listen to the story so I keep thinking I should just quit... so sad.

I still enjoy the audiobooks (many frustrations)
Revisado: 09-13-23
The editing in this recording was downright awful. The narrator has to go back and fix so many things and it is most noticeable during really intense moments of the story. The voices of characters are frequently confused/confusing to distinguish. The edits are a v voiceover that sounds like it was recorded in the toilet. Really poor quality.
The story is still something I am interested in. The speed I listen is 1.15x which is way better than normal speed. Somebody did a review that I read an mentioned the speed issue and I am so grateful. I am certain that I would have stopped listening during the previous book had I continued to listen at the normal speed. So long and drawn out - lacks drama and inspires a yawn. So bad.
sorry for my lack of positivity. I hope it warns you, yet I wouldn't want you to give up. The stories are pretty good and the characters and their motivations are still worth following (in my opinion).

Historia
As Moldark turns his attention to Capriana Prime, Magnus and his gladias attempt to convince the Republic’s leadership to raise the planetary defense shield. But this seemingly simple task turns out to be more difficult than anyone expected, placing the planet’s population in grave jeopardy. Desperate to save the capital, Magnus and the Gladio Umbra fight to save the seat of galactic rule at all costs. Azelon isn’t without her tricks, however, and provides new hardware for Magnus—the BATRIG mechanized battle armament system.

New Narration Unappreciated (Understandable)
Revisado: 09-11-23
I hope the new narrator can provide a more unique voice style. It's difficult to take over for RC Bray, and trying to make some of the characters continue to sound like him isn't helping - I think it is inviting an unfavorable comparison.
Speeding up the narration to 1.15 makes it better to listen to, as others have mentioned. I forgot we could do that.
Let's give the new narrator a chance. But many might stop listening after books 6 & 7 (based on audible reviews), which is sad. Changing the voices could help the narrator to stand out more.
The story is still excellent and the "sad" parts hit hard. It keeps being well-told.
P.S. - Please make Piper act more like her age. Hearing her is annoying. If she's acting young because something tragic has stunted her development then please say so. Otherwise, it just appears to be lazy writing (particularly mispronouncing her words).

This was EXCELLENT
Revisado: 09-11-23
I found the book engaging, largely due to its compelling narration. The characters are well-crafted and form a cohesive group that is easy to support. However, I have a minor critique: Piper, a character with a privileged background, is unconvincingly written. Her dialogue suggests a much younger age than her actual elementary school years.
The series is a strong offering for fans of military and science fiction genres. It consistently addresses themes relevant to military personnel, as evidenced up to the seventh book, which is as far as I have read.

How many minutes?
Revisado: 09-14-20
How long will the next book in the series be? 5 hours?
book 1 = 11 hours, book 2 = 9 hours, & book 3 = 7 hours so... how many minutes for book 4 (assuming there is one).
Also.. anyone tipping M. Boyett, so he can get some voice coaching for sustaining the voices of female characters?
I did enjoy the story -- looking forward to another book, but I won't waste a credit if it's another short version.
