Historia
Julia Fox is famous for many things: her captivating acting, such as her breakout role in the film Uncut Gems; her trendsetting style, including bleached eyebrows, exaggerated eyeshadow, and cutout dresses; her mastery of social media, where she entertains and educates her millions of followers. But all these share the trait for which she is most famous: unabashedly and unapologetically being herself. This commitment to authenticity has never been more on display than in Down the Drain. With writing that is both eloquent and accessible, Fox recounts her turbulent path to cultural supremacy.

Not good
Revisado: 05-29-23
The main character is so selfish and idiotic that it was impossible to root for her. Her rationale for her actions made no sense at all. She was just stupid yet clearly thought she was brilliant and untouchable. The character development was terrible, and most of the cast was rendered into one dimensional caricatures: the mob boss, the untrustworthy spouse, the good girl turned bad, etc. There were so many loose ends after the climax that there was zero satisfaction. The author's narrative was phenomenal, but that did not save the story for me.

good book with horrible narration
Revisado: 04-23-23
It's pretty good, and I definitely found a lot of the content relatable. It was very eye-opening. The narration is absolutely TERRIBLE, though. I have no idea why more people haven't mentioned this, but the author reads her own work like she's extremely bored by it lol. It made it the book a lot harder to get through because I could only take her droning on for so long at a time. The other issue I take with this book is it is definitely skewed toward a very specific type of person: a traditional college grad who is having trouble finding their footing. There is not much practical information for disadvantaged young adults or those on a non-traditional path. So it was OK. Glad I read it but probably won't use every bit of advice given.

But when her best friend, Summer, invites her on a glamorous getaway to the Mediterranean aboard her billionaire boyfriend's yacht, the only sensible answer is yes. Belle hopes the trip will be a much-needed break from her stalled acting career and uniquely humiliating waitressing job, but once she's aboard the luxurious Lion's Den, it soon becomes clear this jet-setting holiday is not as advertised.

unrealistic storyline, unlikeable characters
Revisado: 02-14-23
Ugh, this book was not for me. The main characters were all so insufferable that I was genuinely shocked about the neat, happy endings each character received. It felt BEYOND unrealistic for them to treat their love interests so badly and then have every single one of them married & settled by the end.
There was a lot of talk and inner monologue, particularly by Nora and Larkin, that revolved around "helping" and "fixing" their male partners, and that was just gross to me. 1. Because it's never any woman's job to reform her partner, and 2. Because, again, it seemed completely unrealistic that these ADULT women (with confidence, personality, careers, businesses, and their own wants & needs) would ever have the patience to stay in those relationships.
So many of the character's complaints were petty, grossly privileged, and/or simply ridiculous. Both Palmer and Cooper have careers other people would KILL to have, but they endlessly complain about not being handed a job at their family's company. Another example was the complaining about Dr. Beau caring for Palmer while pregnant in the epilogue. Hello! We are in the midst of a maternal health crisis; again, there are so many women who would appreciate even a fraction of the care Palmer complains about.
Regarding the performance aspect..... just YIKES. i barely even know where to begin but for goodnessake I have no idea why the MALE voice actors voiced the FEMALE dialog in some parts in girly voices, especially since there were separate, female voice actors for those characters. 🤦🏼♀️
Lastly, I've got to mention that these were literally THE WORST, most cringey sex scenes I've ever read/listed to. They were written in such a literal, physical way with no descriptions of how those involved actually felt. It was like a verbal diagram of a sex scene lmao "this looked like this, then i moved here, then i did this" and so on 😆

Buckhead isn’t a place you live, it’s a place you survive. And that applies even to the wealthy housewives that have it all. Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

fantastic listen from start to finish!! the twists were totally unexpected to me :) this is very much a woman-centered mystery/suspense in that features various issues i think many women can relate to and may even have some experience with including marriage and marital changes, aging, lgbtq+ exploration/growth, motherhood, and social pressures. HIGHLY recommend this one!
