Historia
Duchess Day Radley is a 13-year-old self-proclaimed outlaw. Rules are for other people. She is the fierce protector of her five-year-old brother, Robin, and the parent to her mother, Star, a single mom incapable of taking care of herself, let alone her two kids. Walk has never left the coastal California town where he and Star grew up. He may have become the chief of police, but he’s still trying to heal the old wound of having given the testimony that sent his best friend, Vincent King, to prison decades before. And he's in overdrive protecting Duchess and her brother.

A detailed, puzzle of a story
Revisado: 12-06-24
Great characterization, storytelling, descriptive writing. This had a somber feel throughout due to the nature of the story. It keeps you guessing how all the pieces fit together. Underlying theme about familial and friendship love & loyalty, and how those relationships can change and some bonds are never broken. Ending was bittersweet. These characters are written so well, you think about them when doing other things throughout your day.

Stellar work of literature!
Revisado: 11-26-24
Story of friendship and family, perseverance, love, hope, triumph against all odds and circumstances shaping lives. So many twists and turns, so many surprise moments and never have I ever simultaneously rooted for so many literary characters as the story unfolded.

Interesting generational story
Revisado: 10-08-24
Interesting story about connecting the Titanic 1st class passenger experience and ultimate tragedy to a modern day relative on her own investigative journalism story. I liked the duel perspectives and cutting back and forward in time, and trying to piece together as a reader how it connects. Author did a good job of wrapping it all up at the end, with a few unexpected details too. My favorite part was the description of Ava on what she went through, saw, smelled, tasted, felt during Titanic’s sinking (and how she was in the same lifeboat as Molly Brown).

Wonderfully crafted story of perseverance at all costs
Revisado: 03-13-24
Great storytelling, heart wrenching descriptions at times, and unrelenting undertones of hope throughout. Wish it was longer and told of characters’ stories more in depth; felt rushed at times and I was left wondering about the characters’ futures. The part when it finally got to the mother’s story was heartbreaking (second to last chapter). Heroic story about not giving up; makes you want the main character to finally get her freedom so badly. Aside from wanting more in depth information that are presented to us (felt they were too brief), I think it can be a little misleading to those that don’t know about the real Underground Railroad to read this book and think there was really a railroad with a box car, etc.. otherwise, I think this was a wonderfully crafted story of perseverance even at the most daunting costs.

Historia
Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

Great story told by two generations
Revisado: 02-27-24
Great story, from a grandmother’s view and granddaughter’s view. Each telling a side to a story about love, strength, bravery, and family ties. It really makes you root for/want the characters’ freedom in the grandmother’s narration, as she navigates the war and finds her own inner strength. The end filled me with emotion. Would recommend.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Love how the characters’ stories wove together
Revisado: 02-15-24
Really enjoyed this book. The details in the writing for each character really engage the reader while weaving a story about a small town that, in one way or another, shows how they are all connected. Highly recommend.

Historia
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Unique perspective told in a beautiful way
Revisado: 06-07-23
I started this book wondering how I’d feel about this unique perspective of the war; and when it was over felt like all the layers and stories told were truly touching. The connection to history while offering another vantage point can be emotional at times. This is one of those books that will definitely sit with you, especially the last few lines. Highly recommend.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.
