Historia
Texas Ranger Darren Mathews isn’t sure he’s been a good cop, but believes he’s got a shot at being a good man—if he manages to dodge the potential indictment hanging over his head and if he, from here on out, pledges allegiance to the truth. It’s a virtue the country appears to have wholly lost its grip on, but one Darren sees as his salvation. He is in the midst of remaking his life with the woman he loves when he is visited by his mother armed with a tall tale about a missing Black college student, Sera (whose white sorority sisters insist she isn’t missing at all).

Perfection

I’m so sad it’s the last book but what a beautiful way to wrap a timely series on family, law enforcement, Texas, race, class. Nicely done.

Unexpected but lots of plot holes
Revisado: 10-09-23
January Lavoy makes everything better! What a great narrator. The book is just ok. While the ending is slightly surprising there are plot holes in the last half which just seem silly.

All across Europe, the most ruthless criminals are suffering gruesome deaths. At first, it seems coincidental that their underworld affiliations are finally catching up to them. To outsiders, the Crenshaw Six appear to be led by a man named Garcia...but what no one has figured out is that the gang's real leader (and secret weapon) is Garcia's girlfriend, a brilliant young woman named Lola. Lola has mastered playing the role of submissive girlfriend, and in the man's world she inhabits she is consistently underestimated.

Disappointed
Revisado: 06-11-19
I really wanted to love this. Urban fiction. Gritty. The character is not likable. And the narrator doesn’t have the LA Mexicana accent I’d expect. I’m hoping this is the first in the series but it gets better.

Historia
In Evicted, Princeton sociologist and MacArthur “Genius” Matthew Desmond follows eight families in Milwaukee as they each struggle to keep a roof over their heads. Hailed as “wrenching and revelatory” (The Nation), “vivid and unsettling” (New York Review of Books), Evicted transforms our understanding of poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving one of twenty-first-century America’s most devastating problems. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible.

Hands down - best non-fiction I've read
Revisado: 04-28-16
This is my 1st review. This book is the most impactful I've read since Roots. It's so gut wrenching and tragic. I had to pull over a sob when it ended because it's my grandmother's story. And could be anyone you know. Or judge on the street. The narration is impeccable. The story - is our America.

One of my favorite narrators
Revisado: 04-11-15
The narrator was perfect. She brought nuances to each character and captured the French & creole spoken in the region.
I didn't read the 3 books prior to this one, but it was still a great stand-alone read.

Washington, D.C., 1972. Derek Strange has left the police department and set up shop as a private investigator. His former partner, Frank "Hound Dog" Vaughn, is still on the force. When a young woman comes to Strange asking for his help recovering a cheap ring she claims has sentimental value, the case leads him onto Vaughn's turf, where a local drug addict's been murdered, shot point-blank in his apartment. Soon both men are on the trail of a ruthless killer: Red Fury, so called for his looks and the car his girlfriend drives, but a name that fits his personality all too well.

Who's writes street better?
Revisado: 04-07-12
What did you love best about What It Was?
He is the best street crime writer there is. He nails the jargon, the speed, the grit.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes. The chase was great. Left me wanting more.
What about J. D. Jackson’s performance did you like?
He has a rich voice and handles the rhythm of the cops speech and the street jargon well.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
It doesn't need one. The title is the tag line!

Where does Wonder rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Top 3.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Wonder?

Which scene was your favorite?
The principal's speech.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. I started listening with my children but couldnt wait for them. I listened without them and finished in 2 days. It's beautiful.

Easy read, nice back drop
Revisado: 04-07-12
What did you like best about The Next One to Fall? What did you like least?
The main character was smart and feisty. I loved her best friendand their relationship. I thought their were too many characters, some needless.
Would you be willing to try another book from Hilary Davidson? Why or why not?
Yes. She's a smart writer with a strong female lead.
What aspect of Hillary Huber’s performance would you have changed?
I thought her voice for the main character was flat and monotone. I disliked her reading. However, her supporting characters were fabulous. She handled the accents well.
Was The Next One to Fall worth the listening time?
Yes.
