Technical and lacking typical Bryson-ness

I made it a quarter of the way through this book and I’m returning it. I dearly love Bill Bryson and some of his books are my all-time favorites. This book is exquisitely researched, but is quite dull with very many technical details, and almost completely lacking the humor and perspective that makes Bill Bryson such a great author. This one is a dud, sorry.

This book is an excellent overview of World War II from start to finish. It often seems like a whirlwind tour, and topics change rapidly. But I guess that’s what has to happen when you condense WWII in to 8 hours. Good narration. Politically neutral, factually and event based. Recommended!

Could have been much better

This book has OK information, but doesn't tell it in a very storylike manner. For example, it never really gets in to the miners lives or about the actual mining! The pre-stampede narrative is good though.
The narrators emphasis is all wrong and sounds somewhat condescending and is dramatic at all the wrong times.
Surely there are better choices.
