Performance was excellent.
For this genre the book was too gory explicit IMO. Chapters of gore didn’t add to the story. I guess that was Patterson’s doing; sometimes less is more. Also the story of the cowgirl was unnecessary or should have tied in more, but it was like an afterthought that should have been edited out or???
I like the main characters and IF the next book is not too gory might read.

The basic story is a good one; Comey’s second book has Norah doing some pretty stupid and uncharacteristic moves which is why he got 4 stars. We literally would blurt out, “Norah isn’t stupid!” So to Comey, we say, remember who your characters are and tighten up your writing! AND BENNIE IS THE STAR!

Good story and characters; we listen while working and it made us laugh even. Good narration so don’t change it if there are more of these characters, which we look forward to!

I don't know what the writer and producer were thinking. Scott Brick reads this as if he is a perv. Worst Narration Ever. And the storyline is weak and overwritten. I was captive and yet could not stand it and went for the next two hours in silence rather than listen to this book.

The actual murder mystery is very good.
It is a very detailed Victorian novel and as a fluke I enjoyed it. The performance was great, the storyline novel.

Jeremy Bobb: I listened to the first book "Red Sparrow", so I know, you know that the primary character's name is pronounced "Dominika" (Dom-man-eek-aah), not (Dom-men- ik-ka"). What in the world happened during production? You are an excellent narrator who owns these characters; you really screwed up! I loved the first book and the characters (that's why I purchased book 2) and I loved the sound of her name pronounced correctly as it might be in Russian. Now, I don't want to say I do not enjoy the Latin version of this name (thank you to all the Puerto Ricans), but your choice to force us into hearing her name mispronounced throughout a 20 hour book bordered upon madness! Please, please, I do hope you got it straight in Book 3; after all, with the author now passed into the great beyond, we will not have another opportunity to hear another. And, I have to say, if this decision to mispronounce was not Jeremy Bobb's fault, but rather productions, you guys need to know that some of us will be looking at future productions of yours (other titles and authors) and weighing whether we want to make another purchase of your products. Finally, your authors, out there, better make sure that your contract includes a stipulation that audible produces and narrators are bound to pronounce your character's names correctly, or suffer consequences. I have to say I, for one, am very disappointed; you made listening to this book a chore rater than a pleasure.

Love the characters. The idea for the story was good. And it was reading well up until the last couple of hours and it was like Connolly decided he needed to wrap it up at great expense to the storyline.
Also, too much stupid politics with the Captain and the DA and who cares?
Maddy Bosch is the only character that is not to interesting. Two dimensional, her participation could have been by anyone in the story so not getting the "special-ness" of Maddy.
It seemed like Connolly phoned the ending in... So, a disappointment

She was the first woman I looked up to as a role model outside my hardworking single mother. To listen to this strong wonderful story of my time filled in the gaps, broadened my knowledge, made me weep and wonder when, or if, we will wake up in time. I cannot recommend this audible book enough; my husband and I are going to listen together in our studio.

Serial-killer violent, not a historical thriller!

I'd return it but we bought it a while back, tried it once and were bored, so didn't get far. Now we got into it -- stuck with it 3+ hours because we were traveling -- and finally said, NO. Here is the thing -- It sounds like it should be about history, a dc archivist, with a killer and threats and thrills and ... but it has too much Hannibal Lector vibes. Meltzer goes into detail about what the killer does to his victims. And I don't get why that is important in a story that is advertised as it is -- some sick stuff that I can't repeat due to giving it away for those that want this type of stuff.
Audible, advertise that it is graphically slasher violent. Do better.
Also, Scott Brick as a narrator has so many books to his name, but I find his to have the same intonation with all the parts and it is a bit sad and on the edge no matter what is going on. Not a fan.

Graphic/ nneccessary description of child torture

I like Connelly, but this book I put down. He had to describe what happened to the boy who is the homicide victim, I get that, but then the coroner started in on a long description of all the terrible things he'd seen done to children in his stint as coroner. NO. NOT NECESSARY. Gratuitous gore! I did not bother to finish the book, as I didn't want more of it. I've seen the tele production but so I know the story is good but only listen if you enjoy torture described for close to an hour in depth.... My husband assures me he did not do this in the later books.
