Reading Byron is always a favorite pastime for me. I decided to listen to the audio version and was immediately drawn in. Rob Goll gives life to the characters in Bryon's verse tale. It's is an emotional tale as well as a swashbuckling story. A real treat to listen. I highly recommend.

From the moment I began listening, the world disappeared.
Byron's "The Giaour" is a work of stunning beauty. A tale of love, revenge, the clash of cultures, and religious reconciliation, wrapped in language so beautiful and sublime, I was forced at times to stop listening and marvel at what I had just heard.
This narrative poem tells of Leila, a member of her master Hassan's harem, who loves the giaour. For loving the giaour, she is killed by Hassan by being drowned in the sea. In revenge, the giaour kills Hassan. Remorseful he enters a monastery. Even as he rejects the traditions of the monks around him, his devotion to his dead love takes on the characteristics of its own religiousness. The tale also shows the differences in Christian and Muslim views of love and the afterlife with references to the undead and vampirism. Byron's poem, in my opinion, is poetry at its most transcendent.
Rob Goll's reading is brilliant. The poem is told by different narrators and Goll effectively interprets each. It is a moving, emotional reading worthy of the soaring beauty of Byron's words. I highly recommend this audio version of Lord Byron's "The Giaour".

Rob Goll gives an impressive vocal interpretation of Byrons' The Bride of Abydos. This is one of Byron's lyrical narratives. Marked by beautifully descriptive writing, Byron tells the tale of an ill-fated, tragic love with underlying themes of revenge and proof of manhood. Goll's perfect pacing of a difficult meter and rhythm in places, makes listening a truly enjoyable experience. I highly recommend and am looking forward to Goll's other readings of Byron's Turkish Tales.

Wuthering Heights Audiolibro Por Emily Brontë arte de portada

A Classic Brought To Life...

When one reads Wuthering Heights it is almost impossible not to be immersed in its dark, Gothic atmosphere. The setting is heavy, heavy with the emotional turmoil of its characters. A Victorian love story which went against the mores of Victorian society with its depiction of women, violence, and abuse. And yet...it remains a classic. A classic we go back and re-read again, if only for the beauty of its despair.

Once again the players of the Online Stage have managed to bring this classic to life. Their portrayals breathe life into Brontë’s characters. This reader was engrossed in the characters’ emotions. From Catherine’s manipulative nature to Heathcliff’s desire for revenge to the supernatural suspense of their ghostly figures on the moor; and the others whose world’s are so affected by the tragic nature of Catherine and Heathcliff’s love, this listener’s anger rose and heart broke, so effectively were they played.

The cohesiveness of this audio book is held together, as is the novel, by the character of Ellen “Nellie” Dean, the housekeeper of Thrushcross Grange and the servant to both of the Catherines. She is the witness/participant to the events she narrates. Kudos to Lillian Rachel who plays this role so brilliantly, and kept this listener spellbound.

Kudos also to Rob Goll as Heathcliff (and who also nailed Joseph’s quirky manner and accent as well). His performance as one of the most tragically dark characters in literature lingered in this listener’s heart even after I was done listening.

Each of the Online Stage performers shone the brilliance of their talent into this brooding novel.
I highly recommend this audio book. Spend a bit of time on the Yorkshire moors, listen for the sound of Kathy and Heathcliff’s voices as they call to each other on its winds. The voices of the Online Stage players will haunt you for a long time.

Isabella is my favorite of all Keats' poetry. Rob Goll has interpreted this tragic romantic poetic narrative brilliantly. I would challenge anyone to listen and not be moved to tears. Highly recommended.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley has endured and inspired for more than 200 years. This classic gothic tale of the limits to which the curious mind of a genius will go to serve his pride, encompasses the timeless questions posed by religion, science, philosophy, and ethics, some as relevant and maybe more so in these current times. I have read the novel many times over the years, seen the movies, this is the first I have listened to an audio version.

Most know the story of Victor Frankenstein and the creature he created. Most are familiar with the curious turn karma takes as Frankenstein’s creation destroys his life, his family and everything he loves. The voices the narrator, Rob Goll, brings to these characters is engaging. Especially outstanding is his telling of the Creature’s tale. Here Frankenstein is presented with the realization, that even he could not have dreamt he would create such an intelligent, resourceful being, capable of feeling pain, longing, and the need for love. Goll expresses these emotions vividly, with perfect dramatic pause and pacing.

In Shelley’s own words she set out to create a tale: “…one to make the reader dread to look round, to curdle the blood, and quicken the beatings of the heart.” Goll’s singular dramatization does all that during, and even after the final words are spoken.

I highly recommend this audio version of Mary Shelley's brilliant novel, Frankenstein,

This, the final book in the Strategos trilogy, was for me the best. Gordon Doherty’s brilliant writing reached an even higher level with the Battle of Manzikert fought on August 26 in the year 1071 as the backdrop. The first two books and this one lead up to that one important and inevitable battle between the Byzantum and Alp Arslan’s Seljuk empires.

Apion, at this stage of his life is a hardened soldier and a military strategist. His importance to Emperor Romanus Diogenes has grown. Yet though all the planning, the treachery in Constantinople continues, and the inevitable battle must take place.

In the Seljuk empire, the Sultan Alp Arslan has also faced challenges among his own. He is presented as not so different from the Byzantine emperor he will ultimately face. Alp Arslan is a complex character, well written by Doherty. I felt a great deal of sympathy with and respect for his actions.

The Byzantine army, unfortunately, is affected by gold-bought deception and the desertion of its ranks. Apion and Diogenes finally stand back to back as the islands in the storm suggested by the title.

This book was emotional on so many levels, Aprion faces so many trials: loss, his revenge-sworn son, guilt, and the ultimate choice at the end of the road his future will take.

The Crone, an otherworldly character who has been a device for foreshadowing has been used brilliantly by Doherty in the previous novels and in this one no less as she provides closure for both Apion and the reader/listener.

Doherty again manages to take this turbulent period in time and while not downplaying the horrors of war, also brings to light the human story, one of love, family, friendships, and honor. I have not yet been able to leave this story and its characters behind.

I listened to the audio version of this novel. Again, Rob Goll is able to provide differentiation of characters with his vocals, consistency of accents makes it easy to distinguish each one throughout. His strength, though, is his ability to make us feel emotion. We cringe at the horror and despair of this violent time, and relish in the love, honor and friendships that are sustained. His dramatic reading produces a cinematic effect for the listener.

I highly recommend all three novels in The Strategos series.

With so many plays and productions cancelled this year, it was a pleasure to see The Online Stage's new Audible release of
Two Tragedies in One Act (Annotated)

The two tragedies being Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Macbeth. Two of his most popular, oft-performed and quoted plays, this audio presentation condenses them effectively. Although leaving out some of my favorite lines, many of the famous speeches are still included. With familiar voices from other works done by the Online Stage, as always, they perform splendidly, enabling this listener to imagine the plays onstage. Rob Goll, with his extensive experience performing Shakespeare’s works, shines in the title roles and brings to the fore, each nuance and the emotional impact of the Bard’s words.

This is a 2 hour pleasurable listen of classic drama in a unique shortened formal.

...and try to keep it all the year." These words are spoken by Scrooge in Charles Dickens holiday classic 'A Christmas Carol'. So it didn't seem at all strange to me to listen to this audiobook presentation in the midst of a heatwave in August. This beloved tale of redemption and renewal took on further meaning in the challenging days of the last few months. Some say it's allegorical and it may be, but Dickens message came through for me as the need to be kinder, and more loving, more aware of each other. His briliant, poignant, and witty writing has been quoted and translated into every medium imaginable and is as fitting today as ever, maybe more so.

I still maintain if Dickens were to choose someone to interpret his work, it would be Rob Goll. I have listened to many of his Dickens' narrations. His style, timing and interpretation are always a compliment to Dickens' brilliant writing. This is another example. Goll's storytelling conjured for me those days with the family, sitting with hot cocoa in hand, as this story was read each holiday season. A magical performance indeed.

“Rise of The Golden Heart”, the second installment in Gordon Doherty ‘s Strategos trilogy delivers once again. Apion has now risen in the ranks to become the Strategos of Chaldia and his reputation as The Haga has spread throughout the lands. He is now one of the most feared among the Seljuk enemies. Once again, Doherty blends a well-researched history with a well written and enjoyable fictional plot. I sat back several times to take in his ability to make his characters fit into this historical period accurately, while I was still able to feel emotion for them, they are so well developed. I was further fascinated with the authors depiction of Constantinople, the seat of power, where Apion faces challenges even more difficult than the battles he has fought on the field. Still fighting the demons of his past, Apion, Maria, and Nazar’s story continues as a heart rending sub-plot. This book also introduces a cliffhanger twist (no spoilers). I listened to the audiobook presentation narrated by Rob Goll, as with all his narrations he is able to portray these characters’ emotions while giving a well-paced and exciting rendering of action. Goll’s vocal interpretations are perfect for the characterization Doherty writes so well. I have moved on to Book 3 and was happy to see Rob is continuing his narration.
