Historia
From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

Great book
Revisado: 04-11-25
Insightful, well written and read, funny, honest and utterly revealing about the dangers posed by these very powerful and somewhat naive major influences on our lives - the social media technology companies. We like using their products (which they know) but they then use that opportunity to abuse our data to enrich themselves whilst seemingly ignoring the potential adverse impact their products sometimes (often) have on our mental health, our young ones and our communities. A long term solution is long overdue across the world to curb their power and influence

Historia
War with China is much more likely than anyone thinks. When Athens went to war with Sparta some 2,500 years ago, the Greek historian Thucydides identified one simple cause: A rising power threatened to displace a ruling one. As the eminent Harvard scholar Graham Allison explains, in the past 500 years, great powers have found themselves in "Thucydides's Trap" 16 times. In 12 of the 16, the results have been catastrophic.

Historia
In his brilliantly illuminating new book Sathnam Sanghera demonstrates how so much of what we consider to be modern Britain is actually rooted in our imperial past. In prose that is, at once, both clear-eyed and full of acerbic wit, Sanghera shows how our past is everywhere: from how we live to how we think, from the foundation of the NHS to the nature of our racism, from our distrust of intellectuals in public life to the exceptionalism that imbued the campaign for Brexit and the government's early response to the COVID crisis. And yet empire is a subject weirdly hidden from view.

Whatever I thought I knew about the adverse impact of British Imperialism on other nations was revealed as wholly inadequate and incomplete by this excellently well researched and narrated book. Very enlightening and thought provoking. I look forward to listening to Empireworld in due course.

Historia
The 2024 election could be the last free election held in a unified America. So warns Robert Kagan in this brilliant and terrifying analysis of the perilous state of democracy in the United States today. If Donald Trump loses the upcoming election, as he did in 2020, but refuses to accept the result, as he also did in the last election, he is likely to call on his millions of followers to repudiate the election results. It will be a short step from there to Republican-dominated states rejecting the legitimacy of the federal government and effectively seceding.

Historia
Voters say they are disillusioned with capitalism, but a system so distorted by government interventions is a dysfunctional version of free market ideals. As a result, productivity and economic growth have slowed sharply, shrinking the pie for everyone and stoking popular anger. Since these flaws developed as the government expanded, building an even bigger state will only double down on what’s gone wrong. The answer Sharma offers is a series of seven fixes to restore the balance between state support and free markets and lay the path to a more prosperous and happier future.

For too long, Africa's history has been neglected. Dominated by western narratives of slavery and colonialism, its past has been fragmented, overlooked and denied its rightful place in our global story. Now, Zeinab Badawi guides us through Africa's spectacular history, from the origins of humanity, through ancient civilisations and medieval empires with powerful queens and kings, to the miseries of conquest and the elation of independence.

Deeply researched book
Revisado: 08-16-24
Loved the breadth and depth of the book, both in terms of (i) the period covered (before and post the common era) and (ii) the number of countries analysed. This is just an excellent and definitive book that focuses (thankfully) on praising the elements of African history that Africans should be proud of rather than blaming the current condition of the continent solely on its slavery and colonial past. Well done Zeinab. Very proud.

Excellent storytelling
Revisado: 05-31-24
This is clearly the story of a rabid narcissist who, with all his faults has made some truly amazing achievements but unfortunately, and unnecessarily, at the expense of many people’s hopes and dreams. Despite his maniacal attention to detail and deep knowledge of the subject matter of his many companies, he could not have achieved anything without the sacrifices made by the many heroes who worked for him over the years, most of whom barely got a mention or praise from Elon except his family members. These types of leaders and their leadership style is a sad indictment on the state of American corporate governance and sound management.
