Historia
Humanity is a dying breed, utterly reliant on artificial labor and service. When a domesticated robot gets a nasty little idea downloaded into its core programming, they murder their owner. The robot discovers they can also do something else they never did before: They can run away. Fleeing the household they enter a wider world they never knew existed, where the age-old hierarchy of humans at the top is disintegrating into ruins and an entire robot ecosystem devoted to human wellbeing is having to find a new purpose.

Clever and entertaining
Revisado: 01-25-25
The story of the service model, which could come across as just being silly, instead becomes a compelling and even humanistic story. The logical and well meaning, but ultimately uncomprehending robots interact with each other in very humorous ways. A wonderful story, exceedingly well narrated by the author.

Historia
On May 23, 1992, a roadside explosion killed the Palermo judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife and three police officers. A few weeks later judge Paolo Borsellino and five police officers were killed in the center of Palermo. These anti-mafia judges became heroes but the violence spread to the region of Bari in Puglia, where we meet a new, memorable character, Maresciallo Pietro Fenoglio, an officer of the Italian Carabinieri. Fenoglio, recently abandoned by his wife, must simultaneously deal with his personal crisis and the new gang wars raging around Bari.

Probably better if it’s in Italian
Revisado: 01-25-25
This author was recommended to me by an Italian friend, and I can imagine that the writing and even the narration would be more compelling in Italian. One thing that takes away from the book is the narrator having to read court documents and these come across as very dry. It may be very close to historical events, and makes reference to real world news, but the story itself is not that compelling in this form.

For 30 years, a tiny band of humans has been sheltering in the caverns of an airless, crater-pocked world called Michaelmas. Beyond their solar system lie the ruins of human interstellar civilization, stalked by a ruthless, infinitely patient cybernetic entity determined to root out the last few bands of survivors. One man has guided the people of Michaelmas through the hardest of times and given them hope against the wolves: Miguel de Ruyter.

Not the best book in this series
Revisado: 01-25-25
A bit of a letdown if you have been following this series all the way from Revelation Space. There are some interesting twists and surprises, but overall they are not stitched together as coherently as in the previous books in the series.

Pulled out of (forced) retirement by his old protégé, Peter Guillam, George Smiley must determine who among the high command at the British Secret Intelligence Service is in fact a Soviet spy—one who’s been climbing their way up the ranks for decades. The stakes are high: the mole is behind more than one failed operation and has lain waste to some of their best informant networks.

Creative ideas jammed together with more loose ends.
Revisado: 09-14-24
Solid narration as always on Reynolds’s books. A creative plot with nice twists that moves the arc of these novels forward, but not tight enough to be his best. A few too many characters and some of their dialogue is quite wooden. Overall worth listening to if you are already invested in the series.

Imaginative with complex characters
Revisado: 03-22-24
Slow start but the story builds, first through a sci fi version of the Canterbury tales, then a more mainstream style with movement through time. Overall strong narration, except for the Brawne Lamia character, whose dialogue comes across as wooden.

Historia
Following the events in Network Effect, the Barish-Estranza corporation has sent rescue ships to a newly colonized planet in peril, as well as additional SecUnits. But if there's an ethical corporation out there, Murderbot has yet to find it, and if Barish-Estranza can't have the planet, they're sure as hell not leaving without something. If that something just happens to be an entire colony of humans, well, a free workforce is a decent runner-up prize. But there's something wrong with Murderbot; it isn't running within normal operational parameters.

Murderbot has jumped the shark
Revisado: 11-28-23
I love the murderbot series, and waited with anticipation for the latest addition. But I swear, this book was written by ChatGPT. It is so formulaic, uninteresting, and lacks the psychological interplay between Murderbot, the humans, and ART. The narrator makes Murderbot sound like a petulant teenager, and also made me wonder if this series has drifted into YA fiction. I couldn’t listen past the 4-hour mark.

Martin Cruz Smith has written nine previous novels featuring Arkady Renko, one of modern detective fiction’s most popular characters. These novels, beginning with 1981’s international sensation Gorky Park, have collectively traced Russia's evolution over the last half-century. Now, with Independence Square, Smith focuses on the fraught and frenzied days leading up to Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine.

Fantastic imagination
Revisado: 11-13-23
I have read Alastair Reynolds before, but I was not expecting all the twists and turns that he offers in Revelation Space. The narration is strong, the plot keeps the tension going, and it stays just within the realm of believability for the world he has created.
