Now in my top ten favorite books
Revisado: 04-08-25
I purchased this as a daily deal and I’m surprised by how much I loved it…now in my top 10 of favorite books. The story is so personal and the narrators voice blended seamlessly. I hesitate to admit I knew little of what was happening in Cambodia during the last quarter of the century. People are so resilient and managed to survive, even find happiness in the worst of circumstances.

Historia
Bhima, the unforgettable main character of Thrity Umrigar’s beloved national best seller, The Space Between Us, returns in this triumphant sequel - a poignant and compelling novel in which the former servant struggles against the circumstances of class and misfortune to forge a new path for herself and her granddaughter in modern India. Poor and illiterate, Bhima had faithfully worked for the Dubash family, an upper-middle-class Parsi household, for more than 20 years.

Historia
For the animals and plants of the Arizona desert, every day is about staying alive. But it’s all the other stuff—desire, fidelity, hope, envy, grief, betrayal—that bridges the gap between science and fiction, and highlights the interconnectedness of the human and natural worlds. A wealthy Gila monster suffers from halitosis. A young peccary chooses a side in war. A rattlesnake upends the historic enmity between serpent and man. A subterranean termite princess comes home. These and dozens more characters run, hop, slither, and fly through captivating storylines.

Loved these stories of desert animals! They’re anthropomorphized, but from a perspective I’ve never read about or even considered. If I ever see a rattlesnake, tarantula or javelina in person, I’ll be thinking about this book. And the accompanying PDF art is really beautiful.

Historia
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Historia
Jubilee tells the true story of Vyry, the child of a white plantation owner and his black mistress. Vyry bears witness to the South's antebellum opulence and to its brutality, its wartime ruin, and the promises of Reconstruction. Weaving her own family's oral history with 30 years of research, Margaret Walker's novel brings the everyday experiences of slaves to light. Jubilee churns with the hunger, the hymns, the struggles, and the very breath of American history.

In my top 5 best books ever
Revisado: 06-24-18
The writing was beautiful and poetic. The main character was the epitome of righteousness without portraying her as sanctimonious. Admittedly, I find it all too easy to ‘forget’ about the history of the south and other painful periods and events. This was not an easy read! Yet the story was so engaging while serving as a necessary reminder to the atrocities that people of yesterday and today are dealt.

Love This Family
Revisado: 11-17-17
April's Rain my favorite book in the series so far. It is spiritual but not preachy. The story is interesting, I love the detailed descriptions of geography and the characters range of emotions. The dialogue is straightforward yet the quality of writing far exceeds most of what I read today. The narrator is excellent.

Historia
From the author of the New York Times best sellers All Adults Here and This Time Tomorrow, a smart, highly entertaining novel about a tight-knit group of friends from college - and what it means to finally grow up, well after adulthood has set in. Friends and former college bandmates Elizabeth and Andrew and Zoe have watched one another marry, buy real estate, and start businesses and families, all while trying to hold on to the identities of their youth. But nothing ages them like having to suddenly pass the torch to their own offspring.

Missed potential
Revisado: 08-03-17
Having grown up in bklyn in a similar neighborhood and background, I thought this book would be very relatable. The story would have been interesting enough, if the characters were developed. But they remained as shallow in the end as they had in the beginning; I wasn't drawn to anyone in the book or much care what happened to them.
