When a fiendish fraudster has been fomenting financial falsehoods, who can find the finagler? The World’s Greatest Detective Agency, of course! Staffed by the eccentric man who calls himself Sherman Holmes and aided by his ever-composed assistant Watson, the duo will take on cases other agencies might consider helpless, hopeless, or downright preposterous. Which is how our fearless fellows find themselves investigating a Renaissance faire’s cooked books, with the finger of guilt pointing directly at their client.

Myths and legends, as it turns out, are not so great at taking appropriate deductions and keeping their receipts, and Fred is more than happy to return to a life others view as woefully dull, expanding his accounting business to cater to various monsters.

Historia
The discovery of an ancient alien pyramid buried under the ice in Antarctica changes Earth forever. We learn that we are the forgotten slaves of a galaxy spanning empire called the V'kit'no'sat who abandoned our planet 100,000 years ago during a massive rebellion. Our ancestors, the Zen'zat, were given special genetic powers and ordered never to reproduce under pain of death...for themselves and their offspring. That means Earth's entire population is illegal and if the V'kit'no'sat return to reclaim their lost border colony they'll wipe out every last one of us.

Good story but a terrible performance
Revisado: 06-06-18
I got hold of the first releases of these stories when book 1 and 2 were released as solos. That narrator did a good job so when they started being sold as box sets I figured I would give them a chance and get this first set. I have enjoyed what looks to be a great beginning to a classic space opera and will give the next set a chance also as they look to have a different narrator.
The narration is very odd, at times she has passion in her voice and at others it is so dead panned it sounds like she is a robot that is reading its first book. There are also times where it seems the editor cut out a stock "and" or another common word and spliced it in, and there is a jarring tonal change. Maybe I am too critical or have heard other performers really make a book come alive and this particular performer just isn't my cup of tea.
I do hope the writing and the story keeps going from strength to strength as the first 4 stories have been good.

Agatha Award-winning author Rhys Bowen’s charming combination of intrigue and romance blended with a touch of humor shines when performed by Audible Hall of Fame narrator Katherine Kellgren, whose deft range and impeccable accent work make it hard to believe this isn’t a multicast performance.

If you write a historical mystery...
Revisado: 08-22-13
What would have made Her Royal Spyness better?
A real plot. Some historical accuracy.
Would you ever listen to anything by Rhys Bowen again?
If this is her best then... No.
What does Katherine Kellgren bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She is a wonderful performer. I enjoyed her in other books and this was the same. Too bad the subject matter was so wanting.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No... none really.
Any additional comments?
For a book set in 1932 there seems to be a lack of historical accuracy. I know this is fiction but really these are on wikipedia and not to hard to check. 999 came into use for the first time in 1937 and Hitler didn't come to power until 1933. Little things like that can yank you right out of the story.

Historia
The Colour of Magic, the first novel in Terry Pratchett's wildly imaginative Discworld series, takes the listener on a remarkable journey. The magical planet of Discworld is supported by four massive elephants who stand on the back of the Great A'Tuin, a giant turtle swimming slowly through the mysterious interstellar gulf. An eccentric expedition sets out to explore the planet, encountering dragons who only exist if you believe in them, and of course "The Edge" of the planet.

Good story but a weak ending.
Revisado: 04-18-12
Where does The Colour of Magic rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Not a bad listen. Starts out strong but seems to fizzle out in the end. I would put it middle of the pack.
What did you like best about this story?
Great characters.
What about Nigel Planer’s performance did you like?
He was able to bring a world to life with subtle inflection.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I almost returned the book after the disclaimer from the author at the beginning. I really don't think that telling your readers / listeners that you think they are criminals is the best way to keep them for the long hall.
This is the kind of action that is insulting to those of us that follow the rules and also believe in creative commons licensing.
Any additional comments?
This is an interesting book but, it seemed to be written to a word count. A couple of adventures and then oops time to wrap it up and throw the cast and crew over the edge.
