Historia
In the near future, a civil servant is offered the salary of her dreams and is, shortly afterward, told what project she’ll be working on. A recently established government ministry is gathering “expats” from across history to establish whether time travel is feasible—for the body, but also for the fabric of space-time.

Just know this is mostly a romance novel
Revisado: 09-09-24
A little over half way through it dawned on me that this is not so much a science fiction novel as a prolonged "will they / won't they" romance novel. Once I realized this, I could no longer keep going forward. The problem is compounded by the fact that the male participant is from the Victorian era and has a whole bunch of hangups about dating and is therefore very difficult to identify with. I am not sure his actions are even explained in light of his era, as he just seems way odd about the way he goes about things.
The plot is otherwise fairly thin. Time travel is more of a gimmick for the main delivery vehicle of a mediocre romance novel.

His son, Robin, is funny, loving, and filled with plans. He thinks and feels deeply, adores animals, and can spend hours painting elaborate pictures. He is also on the verge of being expelled from third grade for smashing his friend's face with a metal thermos.

Decent science story, Flat characters.
Revisado: 10-06-21
I loved the explanations of how life might be detected on other planets. Also loved theories on how life might develop in different environments. That was great.
Narration was good.
What I did not like are how flat the son and wife characters were. They just seemed to be drawn as these people with the most noble of virtues. I get how caring about animals is important. I get it, I really do. However, being really really good and noble is not interesting. As Philip Roth explained once, grey areas in fiction are what are interesting.

I think they need to get more editors. The range of tastes the editors display is too narrow.

Historia
In a Tokyo suburb, a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife’s missing cat—and then for his wife as well—in a netherworld beneath the city’s placid surface. As these searches intersect, he encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists. Gripping, prophetic, and suffused with comedy and menace, this is one of Haruki Murakami’s most acclaimed and beloved novels.

A defense of the narrator
Revisado: 01-14-18
So I actually delayed getting this audiobook because I was so put off by the negative reviews about the narration. I have to say after listening to the audiobook that I found the criticism largely unfounded. In fact, I have to say the narration was expertly done and I enjoyed almost all of the different voices Mr. Degas gives to the many characters in the book. I will admit that the acting for the teenage girl could have been dialed down a bit, but other than that, it was all done wonderfully.
As to the story itself, this is classic Murakami, and if you liked Kafka, End of the World, and the others, you will love this.

There is no language filter!
Revisado: 07-15-15
I did enjoy this audiobook, as I though it was a great, engaging novel. But I am writing this review to address the several reviews I have seen here which accuse the publisher of somehow cleaning up or sanitizing the rough language in the original work. This is not true. Hemingway chose to use substitutes for obscenities himself, like actually using the word "obscenity" (e.g. "go obscenity thyself") or terms like "milk of thy father". This version is completely true to the original work!
