Historia
It’s easy to be yourself when who and what you are is in vogue. But growing up Black and gay in America has never been easy. Before Billy Porter was slaying red carpets and giving an iconic performance in the celebrated TV show Pose; before he was the Tony Award-winning star of Broadway’s Kinky Boots; and before he was an acclaimed recording artist, actor, playwright, and all-around diva, Porter was a young boy who didn’t fit in.

Must Read!
Revisado: 01-24-25
To hear the voice of Billy Porter was riveting. His story gave depth of meaning to the word unprotected. Who could ever imagine it was a lifestyle?
Porter's narrative (and narration) had me in a chokehold as he laid bare the unimaginable pain of growing up as a walking target. Yet, he knew he was destined for greatness.
His story is one that will have reader laughing at the Porterisms, crying over his mistreatment, and fuming about how he had to endure unspeakable tragedies. Trigger warning: his story is painfully raw, and he artfully uses the words that match his emotions.
Billy Porter is a gift to the world that some people will never appreciate, but it's their loss.
Don't skip listening to his song at the end, but pause the audio and grab a few tissues first. Wow!

Slow burn
Revisado: 01-01-25
Adjusting to the post apocalyptic world and the adolescent character was a challenge for. The story is told by a young male character, and I didn't like being in Koli's brain all the time.
The story heats up after Koli is dealt a serious blow as a consequence of his impulsive actions. First person narration gave me access to Koli's emotional state, and I felt like I had to keep reading in order to watch over him.
The ending was abrupt. I knew it was coming, but I didn't expect the events that led up to it, especially the surprise visitor. By then, I'm hooked, so I'll have to read the next book to find out what happens. Hmmm...I haven't decided yet.

Brilliant Performance!
Revisado: 09-12-23
Will Smith is all of what I've known about him from his acting roles: witty, funny, passionate, and versatile; however, this book shows the inner workings of his persona: philosophical, academic, brutally honest, and incredible vulnerable. Smith is on full display about the forces that shaped his life. Some incidents were so raw and brutal that I had visceral reactions to his narration. I found myself horrified by some of his choices but inspired by others. The journey with him was harrowing but well-crafted as his lyrical genius took center stage. Wow!

Historia
Living in small-town Utah has always been an uncomfortable fit for Tunde Akinola’s family, especially for his Nigeria-born parents. Though Tunde speaks English with a Midwestern accent, he can’t escape the children who rub his skin and ask why the black won’t come off. As he struggles to fit in, he finds little solace from his parents who are grappling with their own issues. Tunde’s father, ever the optimist, works tirelessly chasing his American dream while his wife, lonely in Utah without family and friends, sinks deeper into schizophrenia.

Revisado: 12-07-22
The constant moving, the restless father, and the desire to fit is the metaphor for Tunde’s inner landscape. His journey is tumultuous and fragmented in both contexts as he tries to find an identity and a place to fit.
The story seems fragmented at times, I was compelled to see if this young man would find his footing. The act of writing was central to developing the character. It was a narrative sometimes and a self-reflection other times. I sometimes struggled to see the connection until the last chapter. Then I understood and wept. Home.

Meh...
Revisado: 10-13-22
The action episodes were decent, but the ending was too neat. It didn't seem to match the rest of the story. Samuel Jackson's performance was golden. I finished listening because of his narration.

In this shocking novel of a young girl alone on the streets, Donald Goines delves into yet another facet of the ghetto experience - the dark, despair-ridden world of a black girl's soul.
Sandra took to the streets when she was eight years old and tried to fight off the hunger pangs by shoplifting and moving into the profits of drug pushing. Then she met Chink, and with him she discovered love and affection...as well as rape and murder.

Not happily ever after
Revisado: 10-01-22
The odds are stacked against the female character as the story opens. However, readers are not left hopeless as she learns to navigate her environment. She does find love, and that's important.
I didn't like the overly dramatic ending, but the narrator's voice is engaging.

Satisfying Short
Revisado: 07-19-22
Koontz lovers will appreciate the artistry of this short story. It has all the elements that hold my attention-unassuming protagonist, despicable lawbreakers, hopelessly vulnerable victims, and the righteous delivery of justice written as only Koontz can execute successfully. On to the next episode!

Likeable enough but…
Revisado: 07-19-22
the story became too predictable after awhile. The female protagonist is powerful, yet she seems to follow the path of being led by her emotions. The fantasy elements kept me reading though.

Great Suspense!
Revisado: 06-02-22
I was hooked from the start. The story is predicated on a constant race to save a child’s life, and I had to keep reading to find out if the children will live.
How evil can people be? When money is involved, there is no bottom for a deviant mind. The terror, guilt, and grief is not for the empathy, so consider yourself warned.

Historia
The construct of race has always been used to gain and keep power, to create dynamics that separate and silence. This remarkable reimagining of Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's National Book Award-winning Stamped from the Beginning reveals the history of racist ideas in America, and inspires hope for an antiracist future. It takes you on a race journey from then to now, shows you why we feel how we feel, and why the poison of racism lingers. It also proves that while racist ideas have always been easy to fabricate and distribute, they can also be discredited.

Not your father’s history book
Revisado: 02-28-22
This book is an interesting perspective on historical events. It reads like a jazz piece that has a melody rooted in real history, but the storytelling is not short of the ebb and flow of an artistic performance. I knew most of the history, but the connections were provocative without being preachy, damning without condemnation, and revealing rather than accusatory. Hard to put down once you start reading.
