Historia
After more than a year of laying low, Billie, Helen, Mary Alice, and Natalie are called back into action. They have enjoyed their time off, but the lack of excitement is starting to chafe: a professional killer can only take so many watercolor classes and yoga sessions without itching to strangle someone...literally. When they receive a call from the head of the elite assassin organization known as the Museum, they are ready tackle the greatest challenge of their careers.

Buckle up
Revisado: 03-23-25
With some series, it's not the destination, it's the journey. The hero survives because, well, um, it's a series. But the ride is a roller coaster of successes and near misses. That, and the witty banter between our four sexagenarian assassins, make this journey well worth the trip.

Awful
Revisado: 01-18-25
While Andy has a right to be angry about some of the things that have happened to him, there's no excuse for his petulant and angry behavior. It's like watching a rebellious teenager. I kept wanting to send him to his room without his dinner. I didn't like Andy and I couldn't bring myself to care about what happened to him. I've been looking for a good detective series. This wasn't it.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Quite a ride
Revisado: 10-31-24
I once heard someone call Louise Penny's Armand Garmach series "cozies." Clearly he had never read one. Yes, they eminate from a hidden cozy village near Montréal, but then reach out across Canada and the world. Not for the first time, this one deals with stories of terrorism, mob violence and government corruption. Nothing cozy about any of that. And then there are the monks...and a nun.
Chief Inspector Gamach, head of homicide for the Sûreté du Québec, is an intelligent, cerebral, and loyal man to his family and friends. But to his enemies, he's dangerous and deadly. Throughout the series, Gamach's character evolves becoming more thoughtful - and deadlier.
I won't repeat the publisher's synopsis. I assume you've read it if you're looking at the reviews. But buckle up.

A fun ride
Revisado: 09-21-24
I was skeptical going in. I thought, how can Osman possibly match the wit and fun of The Thursday Murder Club series? I just wanted more of Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim. Well, color me happy. Amy, Steve and Rosie rise to the same level of wacky genius of the four septuagenarian slueths. I won't repeat the synopsis because I assume that if you're looking at the reviews, you've already read it. What I will tell you is that this book is pure entertainment. Sometimes you'll laugh out loud, sometimes you'll chuckle, and occasionally just gasp.

Historia
It’s 1965 and teenage Frances Adams is at an English country fair with her two best friends. But Frances’s night takes a hairpin turn when a fortune-teller makes a bone-chilling prediction: One day, Frances will be murdered. Frances spends a lifetime trying to solve a crime that hasn’t happened yet, compiling dirt on every person who crosses her path in an effort to prevent her own demise. For decades, no one takes Frances seriously, until nearly sixty years later, when Frances is found murdered, like she always said she would be.

An interesting plot...
Revisado: 07-21-24
...poorly executed. I read this book based on the blurb that recommended it to fans of Knives Out and the Thursday Murder Club. That comparison is an insult to the authors of those works. The glowing reviews baffle me. The only interesting character is Francis and she's dead, murdered at the beginning. The writing is immature and, at times, just silly. But, fun? No. It's billed as the first in a new series. I don't think I'll reach for the next one.

Sappy
Revisado: 06-29-24
This book couldn't decide whether it's a romance novel or a mystery. The murders are based on a true story of a serial killer in Cleveland in the mid-1930s. The "coincidence" of the fictional version of the cop Michael Malone reuniting with the girl whose parents were murdered years before in Chicago was very hard to swallow. The romance was even more difficult. The plot crawled along too slowly, bogged down by the passive longing of Dani and the detective Malone interjected into every interaction between the two. I kept skipping ahead until I made it halfway through the book, and then I skipped to the end. I just couldn't suspend my disbelief for this book.

Historia
Washington Poe has a story to tell. And he needs you to listen. You'll hear how it started with the robber birds. Crows. Dozens of them. Enough for a murder. He'll tell you about a man who was tied to a tree and stoned to death, a man who had tattooed himself with a code so obscure, even the gifted analyst Tilly Bradshaw struggled to break it. He'll tell you how the man's murder was connected to a tragedy that happened fifteen years earlier when a young girl massacred her entire family. And finally, he'll tell you about the mercy chair.

Twisty
Revisado: 06-11-24
Where to start. The plot had so many twists and turns was like riding a roller coaster. And trying to guess the ending was hopeless. It was the biggest twist of all. And the least believable. For me, any good mystery must have some grounding in reality. This one didn't. It just ran off the rails and kept going. Still, I'll look for the next one and hope that Poe, Tilly and the rest of the crew find their way home again.

Revisado: 06-02-24
I've been looking for a another good detective mystery series after a couple of other failures. Sadly, this wasn't it. I kept falling asleep while listening to it. The plot is slow, the characters shallow and uninteresting. I found that I had no interest in whodunnit or why. Fortunately it was a Kindle Unlimited, so I wasn't out any extra money.

Judith Potts is 77 years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper. One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local vicar.

Silly
Revisado: 05-30-24
The unlikely plot wanders seemingly aimlessly around finally arriving at its rather implausible conclusion. I stuck with it because I couldn't find anything else to read at the moment and I hoped that it might get better. It didn't. It just got sillier. However, the narrator is quite good and should be given better material.
PS If you're a fan of Patrica Highsmith, you'll recognize the basis of the plot. She did it much better.

Just OK
Revisado: 05-22-24
Beck, step away from the bottle. It seems to be a hallmark of detective mysteries, that the detective in question must be riddled with personal demons. It's a wonder that they are able to dress themselves in the morning let alone solve crimes. But Beck does both somehow, although sometimes by accident.
The writing is decent and the plot is interesting. The ending is tied up a little too loosely to be really satisfying. Beck's nearly unerring instinct to get in his own way becomes a bit tiring. Not sure if I'll continue with the series. Maybe later.
As for the narrator, my American ears sometimes struggled with the Irish accent and his low, gruff voice.
