Historia
Since childhood, identical twins Leona and Fiona Dunbar have been getting in—and out—of trouble by pretending to be each other. Yet underneath, they couldn’t be more different. Outspoken Leona lives to break rules, have a good time, and scandalize their respectable hometown of Lexington. Fiona is a seemingly demure churchgoing girl who is the apple of her domineering, widowed mother Mavis’s eye. But together, the twins have fooled teachers, boyfriends, bosses, racist police—and most importantly, straitlaced Mavis.

The story of the Buddha and how this applies to us now
Revisado: 12-22-23
It was nice to hear this story of the Buddha that I had read several years ago. The Buddha was brought to life as a human beings for me and guided me on how to be a better being. I loved the analogy of us being like a lamp, and how our own flame can light the way for others too. The compassion of Shin inchi in the story brought me to tears. Daisaku Ikeda passed away this year and I was comforted to hear his heart through the words in this book.

Ground shakingly real and revealing
Revisado: 08-09-22
Thank you Michelle for your insight in revealing the true nature of the current reiteration of the racial caste system. Your statistics were mind blowing - the number of people caught in mass incarceration. The billions of dollars spent in ruining the lives of millions. What a waste! How much more could be done to improve life for everyone if these lives and billions were used for the betterment of all. Really brings out how the current premise of society is suicidal - in trying to curtail the “outcasts” we are in a war and either side of bars. We are all imprisoned…

The Muppet Show and Fraggle Rock were highlights of my children. Thanks for giving me insight in the man Jim was. I respect and love him even more. Like my Dad he never lost touch with his child like wonder side of himself. May we all reconnect with this part of ourselves. I’m sure the world would be a better place as result.

Historia
When Sandra Leigh was seven years old, she fell into the role of protector of her mother and three younger siblings. One winter night, she ushered her mother out of the house during one of her father’s tirades, and then snuck her back into the dark home through a window. Sandra was used to events like these; what she wasn’t used to were the mountains and nature surrounding her new home in West Virginia.

Historia
In 1960, Ishmael Reed, then an aspiring young writer, interviewed Malcolm X for a local radio station in Buffalo, and the encounter cost Reed his job and changed his life. In Malcolm and Me, Reed, the author of such classic novels as Mumbo Jumbo and the winner of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, reveals a side of Malcolm X the public has never seen before, and explores how the civil rights firebrand influenced his own views on working and living and speaking out, and left a mark on generations of artists and activists.

Although I enjoyed the historical context on the time, the book to me was more about what was happening in Ismael’s life in the last years of Malcolm and the context of the time than about Malcolm. Malcolm is a distant figure in these accounts as if watched from a far which might have been the case.

Brilliant and so relevant - why black girls are exhausted
Revisado: 03-27-22
Here is a book that gripped me from beginning to end! Thanks for a moving, relevant book speaking about many of the major issues in American society particularly from a black women perspective. What it’s like to be an ambitious black women in a predominantly white world. The unrealistic stresses of work that are worse if you are a black women trying to get ahead. The stress this is taking on our health and relationships. The beauty of relationships that help us through even through their ups and down. The strain of relationships unresolved due to lack of vulnerability, openness and grace. The power of a grandmother to hold together a family in life and strangely even in death. CAN’T WAIT to read the sequel. This book HAS to be made into a movie! If Hollywood or any other film makers know what’s good for themselves they’d turn this into a movie, for it’s a sure box office hit!
