Historia
When Iris decides to move to New York to restart her life, she realizes she underestimated how big the Big Apple really is—all the nostalgic movies set in New York she’d watched with her mom while eating their special secret-recipe gelato didn’t quite do it justice. But Bobby, Iris’s best friend, isn’t about to let her hide away. He drags her to a famous autumn street fair in Little Italy, and as they walk through the food stalls, a little family-run gelateria catches her eye—could it be the same shop that’s in an old photo of her mother’s?

So Much Angst About Nothing
Revisado: 12-16-23
The premise of the story, the protagonist's lie and deception, could have been cleared up in two sentences but instead was dragged out over 10 plus hours. The narrator's Italian American accent is awful and borders on offensive. I wanted a heartwarming holiday story but only got frustration from this one.

Historia
Peter Armstrong and Hank Colfax are best friends, but their lives couldn’t be more different. Peter, the local pastor who is dedicated to his community, spending time visiting the flock, attending meetings, and, with the holiday season approaching, preparing for the Christmas service and live nativity. As a bartender, Hank serves a much different customer base at his family-owned tavern, including a handful of lonely regulars and the local biker gang. When Peter scoffs that Hank has it easy compared to him, the two decide to switch jobs until Christmas Eve.

I'm a sucker for a holiday romance but...
Revisado: 12-07-22
This story is full of stereotypes and judgment. I understand that it takes place in the 70's, but to presume the strippers and bikers are completely inexperienced in Christmas is ridiculous, no matter what era. I should have realized the book wasn't for me with the premise alone. A preacher would never shirk his or her duties at Christmastime. There was no chemistry that I could feel between any of the characters and absolutely no Christmas magic. Also, if my mom told my kids this story while she was babysitting, I would need to have a serious discussion with her. I usually enjoy Debbie Macomber's Christmas romances, but this one really disappointed me.

Welcome to the hypnotic meditations for deep sleep. Most of the knowledge that you thought was important on a conscious level has slipped into your unconscious mind. Falling fast asleep with effective and safe hypnosis is like becoming a child again, listening happily to the lullaby of all your childhood.

It was mostly the voice
Revisado: 11-29-22
I may not have given this book a fair chance, but I couldn't get around the painfully slow narration. It was almost like a record being played on the wrong, too slow speed. I know it is about hypnosis for deep sleep, but it was aggravating rather than soothing.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

I kept waiting for something to happen
Revisado: 03-23-20
I normally love this genre, magic realism is such a great escape for me. I would have moments of hope in listening to this book, like it was going to be something akin to "Like Water for Chocolate" but it never made it for me. Also, having the narrators try to put on a Mexican accent was strange. I speak spanish and found the accent very off putting.

Not about Christmas

With the word holiday in the title and the festive dogs on the cover, I thought it would be about Christmas, but it isn't. Disappointing.

In the early 1900s an important ship sinks into the Caribbean Sea, just as the Virgin Islands are transferred from Danish to American rule. Orphaned by the sunk vessel are two sisters and their half-brother, now faced with an uncertain identity and future. Each of them is unusually beautiful, and each is in possession of a particular magic that will either sink or save them. Worth the Effort
Revisado: 08-10-14
It took me a long time, like 2/3s of the book, to finally be caught up in this story, but it turned out to be a good story. Unfortunately I had read a comparison of this book to those of Garcia Marquez, and that preset my expectations. While it isn't a Garcia Marquez-like novel, it is a good story with many generations and their histories and stories entwined. I liked the pace of the readers, their accents, and the history of the Virgin Islands.

The story was fun and funny, but the reader's northern North American accent was so distracting, I had trouble following the sentences because I kept repeating her pronunciation in my head. I think you'll enjoy the book more if you read it instead of listen to it.

Revisado: 07-09-14
I didn't read other reviews before buying this book, I judged it by its cute cover. I did finish the book, but just barely. The reader is fine, it's the story that bothered me. The main character is unrealistically chaste under the guise of being a Christian preacher's daughter while at the same time being an incredibly manipulative sexual tease. Her family is unforgivingly rude and unaccepting. Some of the dialogue is, I think, meant to be funny, but I just found myself feeling offended and disbelieving that this story is supposed to take place in modern-day Texas.
