Really enjoyed Scott Brick’s deadpan narration on this. It’s always difficult to transition narrators but this is really working for me.

Mike and Dave are a great duo. They provide a really good balance of viewpoints with a dry, self-deprecating Kentucky humor (which ought to be available as a modeling fluid from some brewer or distiller...)

The sound is excellent and the interviews are always well done and to the point. Then we have the never ending Zis-2 and Mosquito to keep us modelers who never finish anything company.

If you're into plastic scale modeling, this is the best way to enhance your motivation, skills, and, dare I say it, mojo.

Enter the Seattle Irish

The book is a very good Beaumont novel as usual. The change in narrator was initially welcome (I only got used to Gene Engene after many books, and his quirky, nasal breathing and audible page turning was always a crapshoot) but when it became evident that 80% of Seattle has Irish accents it got to be a bit too much. The awful Norwegian accent the guy did for Lars made me pine for Engene, who did that part brilliantly. The horrible mispronunciations of local names is a constant irritant, and really, audiobook producers should have a list of place name pronunciations.

Fortunately, this appears to be a one-off...

Good but narration is over-dramatic

The Beaumont stories are extremely good but the narration is too over the top. You’re bowing along listening to the book, then the gruff medical examiner shows up and the narrator has him growling and barking like a rabid dog, several decibels above the ambient sound level of the rest of the book. All the characterizations are overdone the same way but the sound level changes of the louder characters are almost intolerable. That could have been smoothed out in production, but wasn’t.

Another irritating feature is reading something like “she laughed”, then laughing. Either do it like a play (do the laugh, but don’t say that she laughed) or just read the damn book.

If this wasn’t a series I love from the past that I’m revisiting, the narration alone would have stopped me from continuing the series. As it is, I’ll keep on going.

A real page turner. Well researched and written and very well narrated. A real cautionary tale on allowing companies to use malicious litigation to hide all kinds of evildoing.

Never read any Evanovich before, and picked this up on sale because, well, they are quite famous now. The story was good - a bit on the simplistic side, but entertaining. The narration, however... the voice characterizations were good - even great, but the massive intakes of breath and long pauses between sentences drove me crazy. Sometime it's something you get used to, but in this case, right up to the end of the book, I was just as distracted from the flow of the story as I was at the beginning. Even for a relatively old recording, that's unacceptable.

An important idea poorly explained

As many have noted, the "point" is arrived at very early and most of the book is taken up reiterating it over and over again, while trying to convey just how precious and clever the author is. Unfortunately, the narration plays up and reinforces the self-aggrandizing nature of the prose rather then smoothing it out, to the point that even the narrator's voice and tone start to grate.

All that said, the book as a whole is better than the sum of the parts because it does have that one important idea at its core.

But somewhere there is a much better book struggling to break free.

Fantastic, densely woven story expertly read. As a long time Grafton reader who took a break for a while, it was deeply gratifying to come back to a story as good as this.

It was great to read this again after maybe 50 years since reading it in my teens, from my dad’s bookcase. The movie sticks in one’s mind of course, and this book really brings out the gritty reality as opposed to the Hollywood glamour. The prose is a bit terse and takes off in uncertain directions at times, but overall tells a compelling story that is as relevant to survival, ingenuity, and the human spirit today as it ever was.

Relentless, just like every other Reacher book. Dick Hill is a great narrator - a bit quirky but very animated and great delivery.
