Historia
Mary Lennox starts her life as an unhappy victim of circumstance. After the loss of her parents, she moves to rural Yorkshire to live with a distant uncle where she resents the wildness of the countryside. At first, she struggles to find a place in this new existence. Although unsure about her surroundings and its occupants, through the gentle guidance of the maid she gradually becomes interested in the story of Mrs Craven, who apparently used to spend her time in a garden at the house, the key to which has vanished.

I absolutely adore stories (whether they be books or movies) where people who need each other find their way into each other's lives. I wish that happened IRL. Narration was perfect!

I couldn't finish this book. Mainly because of the narrator...she actually has a lovely voice, but it's her style that is silly and detracts from being able to follow the story. I thought maybe it would get better but nope, I called it quits with 2 hours left.

Revisado: 04-18-25
I've listened to a string of duds lately so it was nice to finely get a keeper of a book. It's a slow burn of a tender romance. The writing is great although the lines stolen from other very well-known books is a bit cringe. The choice of narrator was unusual for this genre, but I didn't hate it. I honestly don't know how anyone couldn't like this book...but to each their own. I will definitely listen to this one again at some point.

Tedious and boring...pass
Revisado: 04-17-25
This really wasn't much of a love story or romance. It seemed more like a situation of convenience? It's like they needed each other in different ways, so they got together. The narration wasn't awful, it was just...strange. I was ready for the book to be over.

Hampton Hall's new owner has the villagers of St. Hampton Heath all aflutter - all except Lavinia Ellison. The reverend's daughter cares for those who are poor and sick, and the seventh Earl of Hawkesbury definitely does not meet that criteria. His refusal to take his responsibilities seriously, or even darken the door of the church, leave her convinced he is as arrogant and reckless as his brother - his brother who stole the most important person in Lavinia's world.

Revisado: 04-10-25
I hate to not finish a book once I start it, but I just can't with this one. The writing didn't hold my interest and there are enough plot-steals from other very popular books/movies that I was eventually rolling my eyes at every new one. The narrator does a terrible job with the male characters, and a few of the female ones too. I just didn't like it.

Not as good as Book 3
Revisado: 04-04-25
I didn't care for this one. The story was far-fetched to the point of being silly. I do tire of the whole "middle aged man beds 25 year old woman" theme. I didn't see anything in their relationship that caused them to fall madly in love. Yes, the sex scenes were hot, but that does not translate into love. I just didn't like it. Narration was excellent.

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

The BBC miniseries is way better than the book
Revisado: 04-01-25
Gosh this was a boring book, and it went on forever! This narrator is either hit or miss for me. While she has a lovely voice, she doesn't regulate it very well (there are several places in the books she narrates where she whispers/murmurs the words when a female character is speaking, making it nearly impossible to know what is being said unless you jack the volume up, only to get sound blasted when she starts reading a different character), and she gets way too animated at times and makes it hard to figure out who's saying what, and what's actually going on. I get that she wants to display how well she can read all the various British accents, but my gosh it was overkill in this book. I'd rather spend 4 hours of my life watching the miniseries, any day!

Very helpful info for those of us on a healing journey. Just know that if you want to actually do the exercises, you will have to be on the ball enough while you're listening to be ready to write the questions down as they come up, or you'll have to buy the physical book. Bummer! Narration took a little getting used to.

Historia
So much in life depends on chance and sheer luck. How much do we often owe to being in the right place at the right time? In Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet plans to visit the Lake District with her uncle and aunt, yet ends up at Pemberley instead, just as, by coincidence, Mr Darcy also arrives home. They meet, understand one another better and all eventually ends well. But what if they did not have such luck? What if Elizabeth actually went to the Lake District and was nowhere near Pemberley, and she and Mr Darcy never met again until another four years had gone by? Now...
