Historia
William Stoner is born at the end of the 19th century into a dirt-poor Missouri farming family. Sent to the state university to study agronomy, he instead falls in love with English literature and embraces a scholar's life, far different from the hardscrabble existence he has known. And yet as the years pass, Stoner encounters a succession of disappointments.

But in his final days in charge of Carrickfergus CID, a missing persons report captures his attention.

6 year wait, well worth it
Revisado: 08-29-23
From the first chapter to the last, McKinty's prose rolls off the page, in a eclectic, elegant, versatile, and intelligent manner. He takes the wall down and speaks directly to the reader, Sean Duffy is that guy who knows everything about music, literature, and history, without becoming pedantic and staying cool, gritty, and frankly, personable (albeit in a sweary manner) I hope that this is not the last installment in the Sean Duffy saga, but if it is, it was worth the wait.

Historia
First published in 1988 - just four years after Capote's death - Clarke paints a vivid behind-the-scenes picture of the author's life, based on hundreds of hours of in-depth interviews with the man himself and the people close to him. From the glittering heights of notoriety and parties with the rich and famous to his later struggles with addiction, Capote emerges as a richly multidimensional person - both brilliant and flawed.

The Essence of Truman
Revisado: 05-16-23
This book captured the essence of Capote. Truman was a lost soul whose talent both set him free and imprisoned him. Certainly one could deem Capote as a cruel narcissist; yet, in truth, he was denied adult coping skills by his shameful childhood. It is difficult to feel sorry for him, given some of his cruel actions. Ultimately he began alone and died alone. The beginning designed by wretched parents. The end, designed by alcoholic irrational choices.

Historia
On a tour through history that's both whimsical and startling, we'll encounter 17th-century children flying around inside their New England home "like geese". We'll meet a father-son team of pious Puritans who embarked on a mission that involved undressing ladies and overseeing hangings. And on the eve of the Civil War, we'll accompany a reporter as he dons a dress and goes searching for witches in New York City's most dangerous neighborhoods.

Nonsense
Revisado: 09-21-21
The author was to quick to be tongue in cheek rather than elucidate why a “witch” was thought to consort with the devil, or kill live stock, etc. Those who practiced herbalism, midwifery, and were outcasts were thought to be witches, but were not. People who do practice witchcraft or are neopagans, don’t believe in a devil.

Historia
With books like Serial Killers, Female Serial Killers and Sons of Cain, Peter Vronsky has established himself as the foremost expert on the history of serial killers. In this first definitive history of the "Golden Age" of American serial murder, when the number and body count of serial killers exploded, Vronsky tells the stories of the most unusual and prominent serial killings from the 1950s to the early 21st century. From Ted Bundy to the Golden State Killer, our fascination with these classic serial killers seems to grow by the day.

Historia
June Thomson and Giselle Ross are inextricably linked by two unspeakable acts of evil. On the same day, a few miles apart, their estranged husbands slaughtered their children. The murders were not driven by rage or committed in moments of madness. They were planned and carried out with chilling precision, to inflict the worst pain imaginable.

The horror (of bad narration)
Revisado: 08-25-21
I fail to understand why any publisher would permit such a horrendous narrator to butcher a true story of cruelty. The tale needed an apt, melodic voice to render justice to this macabre account of murder. Instead of an woman who could pronounce any aspect of spoken language or the beauty of a Scottish dialect, the reader tripped over the most basic vocabulary, whilst simultaneously destroying place names. Worst narration ever.

Historia
In the Name of the Children gives an unflinching look at what it's like to fight a never-ending battle against an enemy far more insidious than terrorists: the predators, lurking amongst us, who seek to harm our children. During his 30-year career with the FBI, Jeff Rinek worked hundreds of investigations involving crimes against children: from stranger abduction to serial homicide to ritualized sexual abuse. Those who do this kind of work are required to plumb the depths of human depravity, to see things no one should ever have to see - and once seen can never forget.

In the Name of the Killer
Revisado: 07-24-21
Serial killers may come in an array of personalities, but to cast any one of them in a redemptive light detracts from the vociferous evil that they each cast upon the earth. Confession isn’t contrition.

Okay, but...
Revisado: 09-22-19
The idea for the novel is wonderful. The execution lacked finesse. One glaring issue, for me, was the complete lack of mathematical reasoning for a woman who majored in math. Another aspect that I found troubling was that the main character was a simpering whiner rather than a strong woman defying her parents.

Historia
Marion Zimmer Bradley was a best-selling science fiction author and a feminist icon. She was also a monster. The Last Closet: The Dark Side of Avalon is a brutal tale of a harrowing childhood. It is the true story of predatory adults preying on the innocence of children without shame, guilt, or remorse. The Last Closet is also an inspiring story of survival. It is the story of Moira Greyland, the only daughter of Marion Zimmer Bradley and convicted child molester Walter Breen, told in her own words.

While the author has every right to be angry with her parents, she conflates their aberrant lifestyle to being gay and lesbian. Here parents were pedophiles and cruel, not gay.

Historia
In the summer of 1969, Leslie Van Houten and Patricia Krenwinkel carried out horrific acts of butchery on the orders of the charismatic cult leader Charles Manson. At their murder trial the following year, lead prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi described the two so-called Manson Women as "human monsters". But to anyone who knew them growing up, they were bright, promising girls, seemingly incapable of such an unfathomable crime. Award-winning journalist Nikki Meredith began visiting Van Houten and Krenwinkel in prison to discover how they had changed during their incarceration.

Disappointing
Revisado: 08-22-19
This book was not about the Manson women, it was a memoir about the author. The author used first person narrative to relate every aspect of the women’s story, at the expense of enlightening readers on the lives of the women, post cult and in prison. I learned much about the author’s youth, but little else.
