Historia
From school boards to the Supreme Court, Christian theocracy is ascendant in America—and only through exploring its motivations and impacts can we understand the crisis we face. In Wild Faith, Lavin fearlessly confronts whether our democracy can survive an organized, fervent theocratic movement, one that seeks to impose its religious beliefs on American citizens.

Rough listen
Revisado: 12-10-24
The first half scratches the itch of morbid curiosity but the second half is a very bleak look at child abuse. This isn’t a criticism so much as a heads up as I think it is handled well. Stupid pet peeve but the editor really shouldn’t have let you write “aegis” that many times.

Historia
In the best-selling tradition of The Swerve and A Distant Mirror, The Verge tells the story of a period that marked a decisive turning point for both European and world history. Here, author Patrick Wyman examines two complementary and contradictory sides of the same historical coin: the world-altering implications of the developments of printed mass media, extreme taxation, exploitative globalization, humanistic learning, gunpowder warfare, and mass religious conflict in the long term, and their intensely disruptive consequences in the short-term.

Worth a listen even if you followed the podcast
Revisado: 01-01-22
Big fan of Patrick's work on Tides of History and was worried this would be redundant. Not so, there was definitely enough extra detail to warrant the listen and it was nice to see the progress in how he sharpened his thesis. It's a fun listen about a quite interesting short window in history. Very accessible for laymen but I think some of the more obscure characters in the middle and the way he freshly frames some of the big players could satisfy more seasoned history buffs.

Historia
Long before Oliver Sacks became a distinguished neurologist and best-selling writer, he was a small English boy fascinated by metals - also by chemical reactions (the louder and smellier the better), photography, squids and cuttlefish, H.G. Wells, and the periodic table. In this endlessly charming and eloquent memoir, the he chronicles his love affair with science and the magnificently odd and sometimes harrowing childhood in which that love affair unfolded.

Alright
Revisado: 09-25-19
I'm really torn on this one. The biographical material and the history of chemistry was great but the technical discussion didn't live up to his writing on neurology for me. If you are interested in Sacks himself it's worth reading but it's a little too dry for anyone without an interest in chemistry and a little too elementary for anyone with one.

The Middle East is a critically important area of our world. And, with its current prominence in international affairs, media images of the Middle East reach us on a daily basis. Much media coverage, however, is incomplete at best, failing to take account of either the complexities or the historical background of this pivotal region. For most of us, the real story of the Middle East remains untold. What made this crucial geopolitical area what it is today?

Phenomenal
Revisado: 07-24-19
Even the lectures on the interfaces of European history that I felt I knew were presented with a fresh perspective. Really good course from an instructor who is both extremely knowledgable and passionate about his subject. I could listen to him give an entire course of this length about any of the single lecture topics covered. I'm tempted to say this is vital for understanding the modern world but it's really just a wholly enjoyable course.

Broad yet detailed overview of the British Empire

He sure uses the "we shouldn't judge the past by today's ethics" to laud colonialism when its convenient and absolve it when its not but on the whole it was a really good lecture series that managed to get incredibly detailed despite covering such vast time and geography.

Wonderful
Revisado: 05-26-19
The constant name dropping of his mentors and colleagues might have been annoying if it wasn't so earnest and endearing. It really filled me with wonder about dinosaurs in a way I haven't experienced since I was a child. He did a great job of explaining technical stuff in a way that was specific enough for those who might be familiar, basic enough for those who may not, and succinct enough to bore neither.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Tedious
Revisado: 05-13-19
Enjoyed the first several chapters, then there was about 10 chapters where his entire point seemed to be "did you know that social constructs aren't literally real?". Kind of read like a 14 year old who just went on r/atheism for the first time. End had some interesting topics on the future but some of the analysis was facile and seemed naive just 5 years later.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

More human than I expected
Revisado: 04-06-19
The weird woke civil rights bit felt shoehorned in and performative and there was a little heavy handed sentiment at parts but I thought it did a great job of treating everyone as 3 dimensional humans and examining the toll of abuse and mental illness within a family rather than just telling it as a strictly ideological situation.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

More Murder Porn than True Crime
Revisado: 04-03-19
The time and attention paid to gruesome descriptions of violence versus any kind of narrative motion or psychological analysis felt kind of off. Read like an essay left until the last minute where the author spent all their time studying the "fun stuff" that were the crimes themselves with no critical analysis of the killer.
