Historia
Set against the backdrop of China’s Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion.

Reaction to The three body problem and the dark forest
Revisado: 02-25-23
Obviously I am from Chinese background, which I think is relevant to what I write below.
Firstly Author CiXin Liu’s first name CiXin is spot on the two rare syllables that do not exist in English, out of the majority Chinese syllables that do exist in English, so English speaking people ‘s ear cannot discern the sounds and find it very hard pronouncing them. So spot on that I would use them to torture an English-speaking friend.
Secondly an interesting thing about CiXin Liu’s book is that the book titles give the answer to which the whole book plot builds tension towards. It is the ultimate spoiler that even casual commentator will find it brutally straight forward.
CiXin Liu’s writing skill is controversial, in his defence, apart from the skill, there is the cultural background factor. If you watch an American action movie, and then watch Japanese samurai movie, it is so different in so many ways. The starting point of appreciation of foreign aesthetic is often confusion and objection, but if you are open to let it in both movie can be beautiful.
Also in defence of CiXin Liu’s writing, it is already books that are quite thick, simply too many ideas are crammed into the books, they will need to even double the volume if all aspects of a good writing must be fulfilled. Many major history events in the book are in a brief textbook style, as well as many striking sidelines in the story were only slightly touched upon. I think whoever edit them onto the screen Will have many inspirations but also need hard work. For the same reason I cannot deny entirely that this books has pre-editing qualities, but even this under-developed version got the Hugo awards, which means they have even more potential.
The story aspect of CiXin Liu is highly appraised. I think one reason is about “narrative gravity”. The higher the “narrative gravity”, The more realistic the story, The less the “narrative gravity”, The more fictional it feels. To me, CiXin Liu’s writing has high “narrative gravity”, that to some even bordering fragmented dullness, which is the signature of daily mundane. Yet like real life, it always brews the storm to come.
In fact “narrative gravity” is so high in the books, the happenings are so relatable that it is confusing to the mind to treat it simply as novel. Instead it reads like history written by a person who returned from the future (we really needs a word for it) , hence the joking rumour of the author. After reading such a dark version of the universe, one might find the Star Wars version a little bit naïve. I think the science-fiction here to come will be influenced, maybe adopting the dark forest setting as a default?
Below are reactions after reading this novel (understandably why some comments say they are wary of the ideology in the book):
1, Don’t treat scientists with unjust, nor to their family.
2, Don’t call out to the space, nor answer if being called;
3, Don’t underestimate the wisdom of a single person,
And don’t overestimate the wisdom of a crowd;
(A self image of modern Chinese)
4, Don’t tell the secret that can save your civilisation for the public will sabotage it;(A continuation of previous point?)
5, Don’t trust the next generation to continue to fulfill a project, for people forget things; (again a continuation of previous point)
6, Sometimes you have to be evil to do the right thing;
(Which is seem as a typical terrorist mentality by westerners?);
CiXin Liu’s dislike of femininity is often mentioned, but it occurred to me that he has clearly a bigger enemy, which is a white elephant in the room throughout, that is the crowd stupidity. He does not believe a crowd can act reasonable as a collective, and the truth usually resides with the minority. Given that he is a witness of a crazy era of the old China, it’s not hard to understand why this idea serves as a backdrop from the start to the end.
I can’t help thinking maybe if the author was Japanese or American, The details of the story will be different.
Japanese version:
Detail 1: The earth defensive flee has a kamikaze unit, That will carry out suicide mission against Trisolarium;
Detail 2: humankind has chosen 10,000 people to escape, The majority who are not chosen tolerate this without complaint;
American version:
Detail 1: An agent infiltrated the ETO second red coast ship, steal the hard drive, barely getting out while the ship exploded in the background;
Detail 2: the universe actually have a civilizations UN, which eventually finds out about the intrusion behaviour of the trisolariums, and issued hefty sanctions on them as punishment.
(Well maybe this is a bit too much as a detail)
I have a feeling that the Netflix version of the three body problem will be edited immensely to better suit the taste of western audiences, which will not win over the Chinese audiences. I wish there can be a big collaboration between Chinese and US movie industry, and each shoots the parts they do best, with a chief editor, director, chief everything to unify the tone. For the same reason Americans discovered chilli crisp, diversity gives more flavour.

Historia
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy.

1, Don’t treat scientists with unjust, nor to their family.
2, Don’t call out to the space, nor answer if being called;
3, A single person is as clever and capable as a dragon,
Three and more people are as capable as a useless bug;
4, Deception is an art, if you have a message that can save the civilization, don’t even trust your own civilization;
5, sometimes you have to be evil to do the right thing
(Which is against the orthodoxy Western believe);
6, The amnesia axiom of civilization: the ability to finish a single strategy falls exponentially with the number of generations that this strategy has to be passed on in the civilization;

Historia
Whether pondering black holes or predicting discoveries at CERN, physicists believe the best theories are beautiful, natural, and elegant, and this standard separates popular theories from disposable ones. This is why, Sabine Hossenfelder argues, we have not seen a major breakthrough in the foundations of physics for more than four decades. The belief in beauty has become so dogmatic that it now conflicts with scientific objectivity: Observation has been unable to confirm mindboggling theories, like supersymmetry or grand unification, invented by physicists based on aesthetic criteria.

Insights about sociology in science industry more than science itself
Revisado: 01-04-20
It is a break from selling a theory of science , mostly about breaking some limiting bias in science industry. It is good to know because it helps to understand what kind of environment those science theories are born from thus some of it’s limitations.

Truthful and meaningful
Revisado: 06-12-17
Experiencing the worst tends to bring out the best. I find enlightenment in this book while facing my own mistake and pain, I find a deeper layer in myself which is only visible through my own and my family's suffering, ig. empathy, compassion etc that I never gave a second thought.
There is a long way to go for my and my family's salvation, his words helps me ease through some of the difficult time.
