Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

Poor in comparison to previous books
Revisado: 12-05-24
It is hard to believe the same author wrote this book. Completely random story lines just seem to be regurgitated every other paragraph which have no relationship to the backstory. The narrator provides the usual solid performance, but the writing is out of left field. I may not be able to finish listening as the story is so cringeworthy.

Historia
I was burned at the stake at 14...I was drowned in a lake when I was 24...at 27, I was stoned in a public square. I have died a hundred times in a hundred different ways, usually at the hands of the humans I've tried to save. But when a pregnant young woman finds her way into my tattoo shop with a demon on her tail, things go from bad to worse. Being a centuries-old witch isn't going to help me—nothing will. This time I might just die in a way that sticks...permanently.

Bad prose overly exaggerated by the narrator
Revisado: 05-08-24
There is some creativity to the lore, but it is badly evolved randomly pulling new ideas out of the ether with no lead in. It is written from the point of view of the main character whose life is whining and complaining about mommy and daddy issues in millennial fashion. And this from a character over 400 years old. The hyperbolic wining is overly exaggerated by a narrator who reads every line like it is the climax of the story. I did make it through the first story, but just can’t do any more. Finger nails on a blackboard.

Sylvan is fiery and ferocious, stronger than anything Locke has ever encountered. And hotter, too. But time is running out. Locke must tame the prince’s wild heart. If he fails his trial, he’ll lose his inheritance and ruin his family's name.

Great Story, great writing, overshadowed by sex scenes
Revisado: 12-29-23
I have listened to a good bit from this author and love the stories, writing, and lore. In later works the sex has gotten increasingly graphic to the point where it’s not for me. I like a little spice with my story but not a little story with my spice. But still well written and narrated.

Tried to like it
Revisado: 12-29-23
The narrator did a decent job, but the content was terrible. The author has a decent command of the English language but the characters are so badly written I couldn’t get through it. By the dialog, you would think that all the characters were little children in adult bodies and situations. The fantasy lore was overly intricate and poorly developed. I tried to listen longer and figure out where the author was coming from, but it’s nowhere I have been.

Historia
As a college student, I spend my days in class and my evenings selling sage to PTA moms who do moon rituals to manifest better parking spaces. My best friend is a cat who likes pizza, and a “night out” includes hand delivering mysterious packages to the local “coven” of small business owners who repeatedly invite me to their meetings - clothing optional. My life is weird. But it’s not magic. Magic isn’t real. At least, that’s what I believed - right up until the moment he walks into my store.

Not sure how this book got the reviews it did.
Revisado: 11-12-21
I am not sure how this book got the kind reviews it did. I try not to give negative reviews, but I found this one tough not review. I had to put it down part way through the first book. It is an exercise in predictable archetypes with poorly written dialog made even worse by an overly dramatic reading. Yikes, I couldn't do better, as I am not a writer. But wow this was tough to listen to.

Historia
Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

An entertaining lit rpg story
Revisado: 05-20-21
A worthwhile listen with a good narrator. Erotic elements in fantasy books are hit or miss for me and they need to be balanced with the right amount of story. These were not too bad. The world and characters are definitely creative.

I had to let the series go here
Revisado: 04-06-21
I listened to the first book, but I had to eventually let the series go. I found that the plot was advanced mostly by monologue thinly veiled as conversation. A given character would basically just tell the story instead of having it conveyed through plot, setting, and characterization. There were also way too many facts that were just thrown in at completely random times with no back story. Just randomly a character would say to another one, "Oh no one knew this, but this world works entirely different than previously thought, it works in this other way that has very little relevance and no back story."
There are also a bunch of sex scene's that are superfluous. I don't mind a little spice to my fantasy fiction, but this was more like the pizza delivery guy showed up half naked every other scene.
A lot of people seem to like it, but not for me.

Was hoping this would improve on book 1
Revisado: 07-29-20
I was hoping this book would improve on book 1. I think there are some really great aspects about the story and the narration is great. However, there has been no improvement on the huge plot holes, over use of monologue, and gratuitous sex scenes. But still there is unique lore and a good story. I still haven't given up on these yet.
