Generically Inspiring
Revisado: 04-09-24
I was really hopeful for this title since I am a huge fan of Rebecca Campbell's Tarot & Oracle decks.
Unfortunately, while the ideas within the book (the prose, short stories, struggles, examples) made sense and showcased skills people struggle with or feel insecure about (failure, fear of the unknown, etc.), this book had some aspects I could see people kicking back from.
I found that in many ways, the struggles highlighted and the lived experience of Rebecca are unrelatable due to percieved privileges, as well as an aire of nepotism. I wish it hadn't come off that way, but much of the book seemed to be a brag in some ways.
As someone who would struggle to survive without one paycheck, hearing Rebecca mention having to move from town to town, from country to country, it was unrelatable to the average reader. I hope in her future works, the struggles showcased and lessons learned are more understandable and accessible to a broader audience, because I believe the essence of her weighting is in the right place, and is well intended.

Riveting!
Revisado: 03-11-24
I was not expecting to enjoy this book so much. it was easy to love the characters, and thought there is a *hint* of romance, unlike other female protagonist warrior stories, the romance is not front & center. There are great moral questions and action, & I really overall enjoyed the story. I'm excited to read the next book!

Historia
In a small, tidy apartment on the outskirts of the frenzied metropolis of Seoul lives Kim Jiyoung. A 30-something-year-old “millennial everywoman”, she has recently left her white-collar desk job - in order to care for her newborn daughter full-time - as so many Korean women are expected to do. But she quickly begins to exhibit strange symptoms that alarm her husband, parents, and in-laws: Jiyoung impersonates the voices of other women - alive and even dead, both known and unknown to her.

The story really goes into depth about Korean culture and is also a subtle feminist prose. I was taken off guard by how much I enjoyed this book!

Historia
Two young people meet at a pub in South East London. Both are Black British, both won scholarships to private schools where they struggled to belong, both are now artists - he a photographer, she a dancer - trying to make their mark in a city that by turns celebrates and rejects them. Tentatively, tenderly, they fall in love. But two people who seem destined to be together can still be torn apart by fear and violence.

Monotonous
Revisado: 02-12-23
I love the poetic way in which this is written, along with the point of view coming from a black immigrant in England. It even touches on black love, which is not often discussed in media.
That being said, while the author has an amazing voice, it was extremely hard to get through the monotonous way he was reading it. It made it hard to follow and understand, or visualize who was who, what was happening, and how.
The story is sort of the exact trope joked about within the book, stranger comes to town, boy meets girl, they fall in love, entanglement happens, they finally realize. It's overall very touching, but I think either the second person perspective or the lack of emotion in reading really made it impossible to get through.

Beren was a mortal man, but Lúthien was an immortal Elf. Her father, a great Elvish lord, was deeply opposed to Beren, and imposed on him an impossible task that he must perform before he might wed Lúthien. Undaunted by Lord Thingol’s challenge, Beren and Lúthien embark on the supremely heroic attempt to rob Morgoth, the greatest of all evil beings, of a Silmaril, one of the hallowed jewels that adorn the Black Enemy’s crown.

I wish there was more!
Revisado: 02-12-23
One of the great travesties is that JRR Tolkien couldn't have lived for eternity, writing endlessly about all of the endless stories of Middle Earth & its sphere.
The stories & poems of Beren & Luthien were lovely. This definitely reads more like the simerilion than it does LOTR or the Hobbit, so be wary.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Very Interesting, A Bit Dry
Revisado: 02-09-23
I think this is amazing that someone took the time to write about the histories of Mezo-America. There is not much on the books about this subject matter.
The performance from the narrator is about as goof as it can get considering the dry way the information was written out. The author is very matter of fact in his telling, so it is a bit dry.
This is understandable as the author is really just stating what they have learned and know. It's hard to take creative liberties in historical non fiction.
Overall, however, because this is an interest of mine, I found it informative, interesting, and helpful.

A Cute, Basic Rom Com Pick-Me-Up
Revisado: 02-08-23
The perfect combo of charming, romantic, and raunchy-nastayyy, I really enjoyed this story & will be reading the other books in this series in the future. The author does a perfect job of making a basic, feel good, milennial catered romance. An excellent way to wind down after work or during a longer car ride.
