Not helpful
Revisado: 01-08-25
Often seemed just a list if platitudes. Not helpful in real life. Her fairy tail stories require perfect responses from people, which don’t exist, and still the end result is getting them to di what you wamt or need them to do.

Historia
David Starr Jordan was a taxonomist, a man possessed with bringing order to the natural world. In time, he would be credited with discovering nearly a fifth of the fish known to humans in his day. When his specimen collections were demolished by lightning, by fire, and eventually by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, many might have given up, given in to despair. But Jordan? He surveyed the wreckage at his feet, found the first fish that he recognized, and confidently began to rebuild his collection. And this time, he introduced one clever innovation.

Really good book

I’m a marine scientist, and I really enjoyed the mix of history, science, fish info, and personal story. Very good book.

Historia
Most people know Ted Danson as the affable bartender Sam Malone in the long-running television series Cheers. But fewer realize that over the course of the past two and a half decades, Danson has tirelessly devoted himself to the cause of heading off a looming global catastrophe---the massive destruction of our planet's oceanic biosystems and the complete collapse of the world's major commercial fisheries.

Very bland book. Which is fine. The information is fine. Though it’s not presented in any way that some who doesn’t already agree will assent and feel any desire to change. It’s more like a summary of ocean problems for those that already care.

Historia
The long agony of the “sick man of Europe”, an expression used by the tsar of Russia to depict the falling Ottoman Empire, could almost blind people to its incredible power and history. Preserving its mixed heritage - coming from both its geographic position, rising above the ashes of the Byzantine Empire, and the tradition inherited from the Muslim conquests - the Ottoman Empire lasted more than six centuries.

Good overview
Revisado: 03-17-23
There are plenty of other books that go into more detail. But this is a good overview.
