Historia
At a club in Missing Mile, N.C., the children of the night gather, dressed in black, look for acceptance. Among them are Ghost, who sees what others do not; Ann, longing for love; and Jason, whose real name is Nothing, newly awakened to an ancient, deathless truth about his father, and himself. Others are coming to Missing Mile tonight. Three beautiful, hip vagabonds - Molochai, Twig, and the seductive Zillah, whose eyes are as green as limes - are on their own lost journey, slaking their ancient thirst for blood, looking for supple young flesh.

Teenage nostalgia
Revisado: 12-16-24
One of my favorite books in high school reread it for a bit of nostalgia. Holds up surprisingly well some parts are cringy but so was high school. Story is well structured and paced. Brite is great at building ambiance in all her writing.

Historia
Eat Pray Love meets American Psycho in a seductive and sinister debut literary thriller. Food critic Dorothy Daniels indulges in her homicidal urges by murdering her lovers and devouring their organs in this intense, visceral, and lushly told tale of food, sex, power, and the pursuit of a very particular taste set between New York and Italy. Please Note: A Certain Hunger contains adult language and depictions of violence. Discretion is advised.

Thought I was getting something like the hannibal series with a female antagonist just really weird gross smut
Revisado: 07-08-24
So I’m disappointed I can’t return this because I really gave it a try hoping it would get better. But it’s painful to listen to. It’s poorly written the author uses the word fecundity so many times in the first few chapters I must assume she opened a thesaurus once then never again. It’s bad when the sex scenes are more disgusting then the murder scenes. And it’s all written like it’s for shock value which no attention paid to making it interesting or engaging. The literary device of its a book about someone writing a book is used to mask the flaws in the narrative but it doesn’t. I would suggest if you want to read poorly written gross smut there’s plenty for free on the internet don’t pay for it. That’s said the narrator is easily understood if that counts for anything.

This is abridged or missing parts.
Revisado: 06-03-24
I’ve read this before and the story is great the narration is fine but it’s abridged or missing parts half of chapter 3 is gone. It doesn’t say it’s abridged anywhere I expect to get a full novel if I purchase a full novel

I was disappointed after the gold finch
Revisado: 05-16-24
After reading the goldfinch I was excited to read this since so many people said it was better. The goldfinch had deeply flawed but likable character. Not a single character in this is likeable or relatable, I struggled to finish it. As long as the book is I don’t feel like any of the characters were fleshed out. Also the characters are like these pretentious pseudo intellectuals who look down on everyone but constantly need there help. It just didn’t have any of the message or weight of goldfinch. Just horrible people doing horrible things. As run of the mill psychological thriller it was ok but not even much of a mystery

Interesting concept one major flaw
Revisado: 07-20-23
The concept of the story is interesting, the characters are unique and varied. Can tell the author did research into the minutiae of the book. Decently executed and well written except for the dialogue. No humans talk like this, every joke is cringe worthy. Every interaction is almost embarrassing to read. Especially the pagan settlements chapters I found myself fast forwarding through until they stop talking. Not enough for me to stop reading until the third book. Also there’s a scene in the second book that’s basically the taming of Bucephalus and I kept waiting for one of the characters to mention it. It read so much like fire from heaven by Mary Renault it felt like a different writer wrote that part of the book.

Not bad but it has no depth
Revisado: 04-11-23
It wasn’t terrible and the narrator was good but the main character is a marry sue that just has any skill needed to solve any problems immediately. And I get that him being OP is part of the story but it just didn’t make for much suspense. All the characters are very one dimensional especially the women. The love interest is probably the worst of all even though I can see effort to kinda give her some character development. Her Main thing just seems to be the MCs girlfriend and the other just seems to be as her rival. It’s wild when I book this long doesn’t pass the bechdel test. All in all it’s not terrible it just kinda very blah.

Great story engaging characters
Revisado: 03-10-23
One of my new favorite books series, the world building is great; character development and dialogue is organic and believable. Characters are multidimensional and interesting. I read the whole series on kindle then listened to the audiobook when it came out. The multiple actors and sound effects made the story come alive and as impactful as the first reading.

Lots of filler
Revisado: 03-10-23
Has some interesting points but really reads like a essay who’s author is trying to meet a word count. Repeats concepts over and over. Has flowery pose that seems there just to fill space and time. Spent a chapter explaining how bored helicopter pilots are. The amount of worthwhile information and anecdotes could fit about 2 hours. Nothing wrong with the narrator.

Historia
When Rin aced the Keju - the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies - it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard - the most elite military school in Nikan - was even more surprising.

I tried so hard to finish this book.
Revisado: 02-24-21
So to start the narrator isn’t bad. You can hear what she’s saying clearly and she has a good cadence. She does the same voice for the majority of male characters where she just sounds like she’s talking while holding her nose. It doesn’t detract from the story. Not much could. I was recommended this book as being similar to the A Song of ice and fire, which is insulting to asoiaf. So it starts out as a very typical YA book where a girl from Cinderella style background escapes her life of drudgery to go to a special school for special people where she meets a kooky older mentor who will help her discover how truly special she really is. Sounds like quite a few books. So basically a trope factory with some edgy bits thrown in for shock value. It’s wrote in a level I’d expect from a book targeted at middle schoolers. A lot of tell not show writing. The dialogue is clumsy and not at all witty. The MC is good at everything even before she get super powers. The second part it seems like the author realizes she took the same model as several YA series she decided to add gratuitous violence and call it alder fiction . Brings back a character just to describe her rape in more detail then anything else in the book is described. I don’t know what the attempt was but for me it was I’ll conceived to turn the book into torture porn halfway through . I get that it’s loosely based in actual events and Chinese mythology which is a cool concept badly executed. None of the characters really grow nor follow any sort of development. Which is by the third part I didn’t car about what happened to them. I tried really hard to finish this book cause of all the good reviews about the end but I just couldn’t. Don’t waste your time I’ll never get those 20 hours of my life back.
