Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

This book needs to be mandatory reading for these times. The connections with our present predicaments are absolutely there.

Historia
In Lady Justice, Dahlia Lithwick, one of the nation’s foremost legal commentators, illuminates these many heroes of the Trump years. From Sally Yates and Becca Heller, who fought the Muslim travel ban, to Roberta Kaplan, who sued the neo-Nazis in Charlottesville, to Stacey Abrams, who worked to protect the voting rights of millions of Georgians, Lithwick dramatizes in thrilling detail the women lawyers who worked tirelessly to hold the line against the most chaotic presidency in living memory.

Not a collection of mere biographies
Revisado: 01-08-24
I was dubious about this book at first because i thought it would be a collection of biographical essays. i cannot be happier to have been wrong about that.
I found it to be a very thoughtful and enlightening analysis of the judicial system.
Ms. Lithwick manages to pull at least a couple of hopeful points out of the wreck that were the Trump years.
The section on the census and elections are absolutely on point.
There is much to be learned an ponder about in these 10 chapters.
Well written and better structured it was a pleasure to listen to her performance, even when i tend to take issue with some of the performances decisions. This is obviously a minor detail, but i wonder about why she chose to render the "NAACP" as she does, instead of the more familiar form. it is not strictly wrong, of course, but it forces the mind to stop paying attention to what she is saying to figure out what org she is referring to.
All in all, i absolutely recommend this book.

Deeply distressed at thought of his singularly money-minded family circling around his inevitable death bed, when Old Martin Chuzzlewit comes across a young and kindly orphan girl, he immediately decides to take her into his employment. Offering her a comfortable living in exchange for her care and protection, Martin rests easy in the knowledge that her comfort will last only as long as he does; upon his death, Mary the orphan will find herself on the cold and dirty streets from whence she came.

Loved it.

Dickens at its sarcastic best.
Spectacular performance by Derek Jacobi.
I know readers and performers are a matter of taste, but I am not sorry to have chosen this performance.

Historia
In true Dickensian fashion, The Old Curiosity Shop offers a humorous yet devastating depiction of both the most honourable and most corrupt members of 19th-century English society. Hailed by Queen Victoria as being ‘interesting and cleverly written', The Old Curiosity Shop introduces listeners to the uniquely colourful characters of Nell Trent, her young friend, Kit, her doting grandfather and the evil moneylender to whom they all fall prey, Daniel Quilp.

Not to be missed
Revisado: 11-22-22
This is two masterpieces for the price of one.
The main story is Dickens through and through. the other one is the other Curiosity Shop, the description of victorian England at its most human level.
Not to be missed the non human character: the Pony.
As far as the performance is concerned, it is well done, with a weak point here and there which does not detract from the enjoyment.

The most gorgeously theatrical of all Dickens's novels, Nicholas Nickleby follows the delightful adventures of a hearty young hero in 19th-century England. Nicholas, a gentleman's son fallen upon hard times, must set out to make his way in the world. His journey is accompanied by some of the most swaggering scoundrels and unforgettable eccentrics in Dickens's pantheon.

One of my favorite readers
Revisado: 11-05-22
The choice of texts is flawless. The readings are engaging. One might not always agree with this or that characterization, but they still work.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this and Other Harrison readings and look forward to more.

Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

compilación problems
Revisado: 10-27-22
I love Harry Potter. what I do not love is the fact that this recording/audio compilation for some reason cuts about 1 second of audio every so often. that did not happen in the cassette/CD versions of the audio book, so it is definitely something about the way Audible compiles its audio. I returned the book for that reason and will not buy the rest of the series.

chapter list?
Revisado: 10-27-22
Being that this is a collection, I would have appreciated a descriptive chapter list.
I like the stories and the narrador but I was hoping not having to take the trouble of doing my own list.
