Come meet characters who leap out of the book and into your face. Never see a Tarot deck again in quite the same way. Writing is excellent and narration adds to the story.

Clear voice with distinct characters. Exciting well written story. Hurray for the heroine’s journey: no Julie you can’t do it all alone. Looking forward to the sequel. Come, join the Book Devouring Horde! Use your credit and don’t return it. Advise against listening with little kids as there is violence against children. But it is avenged....

Hope, trees, biogeology, persistence, and candy

This book talks about real experiences and real science without trying to make either seem effortless. I especially liked the honesty about what happens without medication and all the information about plants. And yes, when my oak gets big enough I will carve a little 'Bill' into it.

Bigotry overshadows the fun

Unfortunately, blatant prejudice casts a shadow over the fun. The performance is excellent. The text is antisemitic and anti-Italian. Certainly the plot relies on Michael being the superior mate. A modern remake would hopefully provide better reasons than the possible ethnicities of Nick and Joe.

More fun I think if it's not your first Liaden tm book, but can stand on its own. Has some frank talk about sex so you might not want to listen to it with your kids, but the sex is consensual and mostly left to the imagination of the reader.

What would have made The Deserted Library Mystery better?

The plot has a stranger going into the kids house, and later putting a bag over one of the girls heads to kidnap/assault her. Not a good book for young kids.

What could Gertrude Chandler Warner have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Maybe it was okay for its time, but unlike some of the other boxcar mysterious there is a "mean stranger" who stalks, invades, and assults the kids.

Did Tim Gregory do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

The characters were differentiated, but the falsetto for Bennie is very unpleasant to listen to.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Deserted Library Mystery?

I would have cut the assault scene.
