Quick-witted, ambitious Ji Lin is stuck as an apprentice dressmaker, moonlighting as a dance hall girl to help pay off her mother’s Mahjong debts. Interesting read, but forced sub plots
Revisado: 11-08-19
I loved the way this book seamlessly wove in folk lore from a culture I did not know. After a slow start (because it took me a while to understand the different viewpoints chapter to chapter), it was a compelling novel. The reason it gets 3 stars for the story is because there is an unnecessary, and honestly a little creepy, romance. Also, the way everything just magically works out in the last chapter seems forced. It did not do an adequate job of tying up loose ends and providing closure.

Historia
A woman's past and present collide with unexpected results in this hauntingly beautiful debut novel set in rural Vermont. Forty-one-year-old school nurse Kate Cypher has returned home to rural Vermont to care for her mother who's afflicted with Alzheimer's. On the night she arrives, a young girl is murdered–a horrific crime that eerily mirrors another from Kate's childhood. Three decades earlier, her dirt-poor friend Del–shunned and derided by classmates as "Potato Girl" –was brutally slain.

Unbelievable!
Revisado: 03-19-19
At the beginning of this book, I thought I wouldn't like it, but there was a little voice in the back of my mind telling me to keep listening. I'm so glad I listened to that little voice. this book was chilling, heartwarming, and unexpected. The performance sent shivers down my spine and caused me to look out my window at the dark night suspiciously. I can't wait to share this with my friends and read it again.
