DNF. Boring!

There is a trigger warning for rapey stuff so I can’t really hold that against this. But the whole story and characters are just boring and not holding my interest. I find myself easily distracted and not really motivated to return to hear the rest of the story. What do you call the opposite of “can’t put it down”? Gave up part way into the second book. I’m not invested in these characters or what happens to them.

Lacks sophistication

I’ve listened to over 400 books primarily in the M/M genre and many with bdsm themes. I was unfortunately disappointed in this series. Overall I would describe it as a lost opportunity. The world of doms and subs based at Cleary’s Pub had all the pieces in place for great storytelling and sympathetic characters but it just never got off the ground. If I had to speculate, I’d say maybe the author was inexperienced. I forgot James Talbot isn’t my favorite narrator but he just did his usual thing with this. He didn’t make or break it for me, considering the writing wasn’t great in the first place.

Well written and well performed! Characters are unique, sympathetic, and genuine. Definitely sticking with this series.

A bit disappointing

Missed opportunity for an emotionally compelling story. The plot structure was fine, but the relationship development entirely missed the mark. I did not feel connected to the characters or invested in their outcome. Won’t be reading the rest of the series.

Dreadful

The narrator seems like he is trying his best with a book that sounds like Google Translate translates it from a different language and it was never edited. Maybe the characters could be interesting if the writing were tolerable. Couldn’t endure past Ch 7, unfortunately.

Sad but lovely

A sweet and sad short story of love and loss. The writing wasn’t bad. The narrator was appropriately emotive at times and at other times sounded like he was cold reading. Rather halting and strange. Would’ve enjoyed more with better narration but the story itself was sweet.

Great if you’re a philosophy PhD

This book is over the top with the philosophy, you will prob be overwhelmed if you usually like normal novels. It’s also no kind of a romance. The sexual aspects of it made me anxious for the character’s safety and sanity, without purpose honestly. His behavior and risk taking illustrates his self image and mindset in an indirect way but he doesn’t grow or heal. It leaves everything hanging in regard to him but I think part of the point is to see oneself in him and that our own thoughts lead ourselves to where we are. It’s a mess. You will love it if you are into philosophy and you will be irritated if that’s not your jam.

Can’t get past Ch 2

The writing is god awful cheesy. I just can’t get through it. The setup of the cast of characters was only slightly hooking so I don’t have any real reason to forgive the ridiculous descriptions and cliche phrasing. Moving on.
