Really good sound reproduction tech has been around for decades — maybe the producers of this audio book were just too cheap to pay for it? No reason for the excellent performance by McKellen to be spoiled as it is here by bad audio quality.

After all these years. Narration is also superb, and nicely brings out Tuchman’s elegant writing.

As a non-historian who has read extensively on WWII, I found this book to be a beacon of light on a critical aspect of the war in Europe that I had perceived only vaguely before. As historians surely know (as I had not), the entire air war war in Europe (not just the Battle of Britain) was critical to the outcome, as it was in the Pacific. The book’s commentary on the strategic and moral questions raised by civilian casualties of bombing is most insightful, raising issues that remain relevant today.

One defense of this book might be that it was written for young people, who have yet to gain understanding of how grownups talk and behave, and what kinds of events are just too laughably implausible to put in a book. But if that were the case, why would there be so many pointlessly gruesome scenes? Of course, any work of fiction can fairly ask the reader to suspend disbelief. I felt that this one was asking me to be a drooling idiot, and I just had to turn it off.

The reader had some good moments, but had a habit of starting chapters in a louder voice, then trailing off, then coming back louder, etc. If you are listening in a car, this means you are constantly adjusting the volume.
