Wacky and Dumb
Revisado: 12-06-19
I'll sum this up for you and save you 3 hours of your life: this audiobook is a gatling gun of wacky hi-jinks without the barest thread of plot or coherence to hold it together, memes and references so fossilized they gave me a concussion after I was bludgeoned with them, and written in a style I can only describe as 'old man yells at cloud'. All of this lathered in a veneer of sneering contempt for basically everyone and everything. Is bad. Is rly rly bad. Listen if you like slow-motion car crashes.

Historia
Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania - derailing the War Between the States and changing the nation forever. In this new America, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Education Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead.

Strong story, weird pacing
Revisado: 05-28-19
I love the setting here: a post Civil War America where zombies are a thing. And our heroes are equal parts daring, intelligent, and flawed. That said, the story throws the reader for a loop about halfway through and left wondering what the main arc is. The villains are laughably racist and evil, but given the area it's easier to swallow. Still, the strength of the setting and characters is more than enough to make this an enjoyable read.

In this third book in the thrilling and epic Book of the Ancestor trilogy from international best-selling author Mark Lawrence, powerful novice Nona Grey must fight to survive in "a fantastic world in which religion and politics are dark and sharp as swords, with magic and might held in the hands of wonderful and dangerous women".

Coulda Been Gayer
Revisado: 05-11-19
An excellent end that, admittedly could have been 2 books. The story barrels right along towards its conclusion with scarcely a moment to breathe, introducing new elements and using them a second later without apology. A satisfying conclusion, despite my personal want for more ships to explicitly sail.

A constant stream of twists and new story elements keep the reader on their toes. A fine example of a plot-driven story (as opposed to a character-driven story), that keeps the plot humming along. A new character introduced late in the story not only changes everything we know about the setting, but is the best character in the series by far. Perfectly good sci-fi on the whole.
Now the bad: Half the characters feel like the same person. The technical writing level is meh. The author has this weird tendency to have characters repeat the thing the just happened in their reaction to the thing that just happened. But on the whole I'm picking nits. Solid listen.

Historia
Horst, the most affable vampire one is ever likely to meet, is resurrected by an occult conspiracy that wants him as a general in a monstrous army. Their plan is to create a country of horrors, a supernatural homeland. As Horst sees the lengths to which they are prepared to go and the evil they cultivate, he realizes that he cannot fight them alone. What he really needs on his side is a sarcastic, amoral, heavily armed necromancer.

Bros Bros Bros
Revisado: 04-22-19
After spending the last three stories with Johannes, Horst Cabal is a breath of fresh air. A genuinely good man who has a nasty affliction, seeing him somewhat-naively navigate the overly-dramatic, grimdark world of monsters is a treat. The Flying Circus were another highlight, a group of hard-nosed, gun-toting female pilots. They were perhaps my favorite supporting characters in the series, even though the narrator's American accent could use some work--if we're being polite about it. The level of humor and technical writing skill are as high as they've ever been--this story made me laugh out loud so many times--and the series is nicely tying the events of previous novels into something more comprehensive.

Historia
In the year 2243, the Moon belongs to the dead. The largest graveyard in the solar system, it was the perfect solution to the overcrowding and environmental problems that had plagued mankind for centuries. And the perfect place for Cali Washington to run away from her past. But when a mysterious meteor crashes into one of the Moon’s cemeteries, Cali and her fellow Caretakers find themselves surrounded by a terrifying enemy force that outnumbers them more than a thousand to one. An enemy not hindered by the lack of air or warmth or sustenance. An enemy that is already dead.

MOON ZOMBIES
Revisado: 04-08-19
Best of the series so far. Ray Porter is still one of the best in the game at narration and the Moon is an excellent claustrophobic environment for zombie/monster horror. It's different than the other stories in the series and that's a GOOD thing.

Historia
Johannes Cabal and his rather inexact powers of necromancy are back once more. This time, his talents are purchased by the Fear Institute as they hunt for the phobic animus - the embodiment of fear. The three institute members, led by Cabal and his silver key, enter the Dreamlands and find themselves pursued by walking trees plagued with giant ticks, stone men that patrol the ruins of their castles, cats that feed on human flesh, and phobias that torment and devastate.

An Excellent Romp Through Dreams
Revisado: 04-08-19
Full of legitimate laugh-out-loud moments and adventures through time and space. A good mystery has the reader figure it out a page before it's revealed, and I'm pleased to say this happened several times in my listen. A shame that the first 3 books all have different narrators, but it's a small complaint. The writing is dry and cutting as ever and the Cabal series is one of the few that consistently gets better with each book.

What a Despicable Man
Revisado: 02-06-19
Better than the first in basically every way. Cabal is a far more redeemable creature in this one and the descriptive-and very English-writing made me burst out in unexpected laughter several times. Narration is lovely, if you're going for the audiobook, so I'd highly recommend. The first book isn't even really needed to read this one. Which could be seen as both a plus and a strike against it.

Keeps You on Your Toes
Revisado: 02-06-19
Tense and exciting, Bluff keeps the listener on their toes. The story is loaded with jargon, engrossed with the technical aspects of card handling and poker just as much as it focuses on the characters, but does a good job at explaining it for the layperson. The story kept evolving, going places I didn't expect it to go, and pains a picture of a corrupt world filled with corrupt people. It's a bleak picture, but fun all the same.

Queer fantasy western. If those three words together mean something to you, go get this book. Yes the inner monologue can get repetitive, yes the MC is as dumb as a sack of rutabagas, yes there's something questionable about the author saying the the afterward she wanted to write a transmasc character but never once using masculine pronouns in the narration. But despite all those things: Queer fantasy western. And it did a fine job.
