not for me
Revisado: 09-10-10
If you love vivid imagery then this book is for you. There is too much imagery and not enough of the characters - so much so that I don't even care about what happens to them, that's when I know to give up. I made it through chapter 5 then started flipping ahead chapters - it is SOOOOO tedious. I don't normally drop books, but this one is a chore.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: When it comes to author/narrator pairings, nobody tops James Lee Burke and Will Patton in the Robicheaux thrillers. Beloved Burke hero Detective Dave Robicheaux here returns to New Iberia to solve a series of grisly murders. Seven young women in neighboring Jefferson Davis Parish have been brutally murdered. While the crimes have all the telltale signs of a serial killer, the death of Bernadette Latiolais, a high-school honor student, doesn’t fit.

tired of the violence
Revisado: 08-21-10
I have truly enjoyed all the Dave Robicheuaux books, but really, how many times do we need to see Clete give some guy a swirly or pistol whip someone? The violence is getting old, sorry. One reviewer mentioned these guys are getting up there in years - is that how life is in the Big Sleazy really? if so count me out, its not glamorous or even interesting anymore.
I do love the narration by Will Patton, and I love how Mr. Burke has written in Alafair's education at Reed College (I visited there with my daughter and got to see Alafair Burke's real thesis project) - that was cool.
But I will hesitate to buy the next novel, its getting old Mr. Burke.

Too much detail, not enough flow
Revisado: 04-03-10
I am in the middle of this 'read' and keep skipping ahead, frankly I find it embarrassing it is so bad. It is poorly written, with too much detail of insignificant things. Plus I find it hard to believe that FBI characters (or anyone) would act this way.
The writer also jumps into new sections of the book, so it takes a minute to clue into what is happening. No flow and lack of interest.
I really can't wait for this book to be over.

this who dunnit kept me guessing
Revisado: 01-12-10
An excellent read with a long suspect list, that kept me guessing on the bad guy's identify. It is amazing how one incident can affect so many lives, this story shows it.
I liked all the characters and loved the different written and verbal voices - credit goes to excellent narration by Kirsten Potter. Her rendition of Frannie was excellent and funny and she is just fabulous!!!! thanks Tami Hoag for a great read.

don't hesitate - an excellent sequel
Revisado: 08-26-09
I have to admit I really hesitated when I saw this sequel to the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - I enjoyed that book so much, and I was worried this one wouldn't match it.
I was wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. I think its actually as good or better than the first book. Excellent story, totally original. I loved it!

When Hackberry Holland became sheriff of a tiny Texas town near the Mexican border, he'd hoped to leave certain things behind: his checkered reputation, his haunted dreams, and his obsessive memories of the good life with his late wife, Rie. But the discovery of the bodies of nine illegal aliens, machine-gunned to death and buried in a shallow grave behind a church, soon makes it clear that he won't escape so easily.

sure was a long book
Revisado: 07-28-09
Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of James Lee Burke, and Will Patton is an incredible narrator. Great imagery as usual, but this novel just did not grow on me. Maybe the whole cowboy, Texas type story. I am not sure if there were too many characters or places or maybe too much going on in my life to follow the story, but I can't wait for it to be over....I only have an hour or so left and I could not really care what happens to folks in this book. Kind of a huge disappointment since I love all of his New Orleans based novels.

annoying narration
Revisado: 05-06-09
I was truly looking forward to this book, I have enjoyed many of Johansen's novels, but....the narrator manages to portray many voices, but insists on using a whispering tone for the two female characters. I was constantly fiddling with the volume to adjust between the loud voice of the males and then try to decipher Emily's whispering. I am not sure if it was the dialogue or the tone of the narration but even the characters sounded annoyed.
The story is so-so, complicated but predictable at the end, add the narration and I can't wait for this story to be done.

booooring
Revisado: 03-19-09
If you enjoy listening to a pretentious, pompous woman yack on and on about her wealth and possessions while solving crime with the help of her multi-millionaire husband, then this is the book for you. The last straw was during the bridal shower that others put together for our heroine host and the ensuing discussion of describing male mates as types of animals and discussing how many times they performed in a night. Utterly tasteless.
I will not be renting anymore Eve books.
