I am a life-long Carol Burnett fan. So I was pretty excited to listen to this book! But it was even better than expected. Funny, charming, and sad (just like life), every story was told with Ms Burnett’s characteristic wit and, kindness and humanity. I absolutely loved it. Thank you Ms Burnett!

Historia
Sixteen hundred years ago Britain left the Roman Empire and swiftly fell into ruin. Grand cities and luxurious villas were deserted and left to crumble, and civil society collapsed into chaos. Into this violent and unstable world came foreign invaders from across the sea, and established themselves as its new masters. The Anglo-Saxons traces the turbulent history of these people across the next six centuries. It explains how their earliest rulers fought relentlessly against each other for glory and supremacy, and then were almost destroyed by the onslaught of the vikings.

Well read!
Revisado: 10-12-24
History, especially far off history, can be challenging. The many names and places are unfamiliar, which makes the story often difficult to absorb. This reader - and writer - make it interesting and accessible. Really enjoyed!

Historia
Georgie, back home at her estate in Eynsleigh, impatiently awaits the birth of her baby. But she has plenty to occupy her: Her new chef, Pierre, has arrived from Paris, and Sir Hubert, who owns Eynsleigh, is back from his latest expedition. It's time for Georgie to throw her first house party to celebrate his return and show off her new chef. The dinner party is a smashing success. Sir Mortimer Mordred—famous author of creepy Gothic horror novels—is one of the guests. He recently purchased a nearby Elizabethan manor nearby because it has a famous poison garden.

Loved the first 14 books
Revisado: 01-12-24
I’m a big fan of cozy mysteries- and mysteries in general, and never one to solve the mystery in advance. However, I will admit that the outcome of books 16 and 17 in this series were apparent to me halfway through the books. While I genuinely like the characters and the narrator, feeling certain you know them outcome halfway through isn’t usually what we read mysteries for; it’s rather annoying, actually. That said, I hope the series continues and that the writer returns to the unexpected outcomes of the earlier episodes.

A big fan of Constable Evans, but..
Revisado: 09-23-22
I’ve listened to all the previous audiobooks in this series and enjoyed them immensely. And I enjoyed this one, too - but a bit less so. The performance was on par, but the story, in my opinion, wasn’t up to snuff. Before the story was halfway through I was sure I knew who the culprit was, and unfortunately I was correct. This storyline was just too predictable. Hoping for more “mystery” from the next one!

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

One of the best books I have come across in many many years. Beautifully written and superbly performed. It will stay with my for some time, and I look forward to returning to it again after some time - which isn’t something I can say often.

I had been waiting for Audible to release this title for some time, and was thrilled when they did. It has long been a favorite, both in written and audio form - and this narration certainly does it justice. I've already listened to it twice in just a few months. A great adventure story for children and adults alike!

Absolutely Fantastic From Beginning to End
Revisado: 10-30-10
Although this story is not told entirely from the point of view of Rose, you are convincingly, vividly and completely transported into her world. Not since "Watership Down" have I found a book which so effectively accomplishes this feat. It is well read and utterly engrossing. Some of the details of the final couple of chapters are somewhat unrealistic, but I think this is notable mostly because the rest of the story is so riveting and believable. Taken as a whole, the story is very uplifting, but at times can be devastatingly sad - particularly for the soft-hearted - keep a box of tissues handy if you are of this ilk! The story of Rose has been indelibly imprinted on my memory and has become one of my all-time favorites (no small task for a very avid reader); I will surely return to it again and again for years to come.
